The power sector has been the ma<strong>in</strong> contributor to the expansion <strong>in</strong>energy use, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g its share of total primary energy demand from 23 percent <strong>in</strong> 1990 to 39 per cent <strong>in</strong> 2012. The build<strong>in</strong>g (27 per cent) and <strong>in</strong>dustry(22 per cent) sectors are the other major energy consum<strong>in</strong>g activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong>(IEA 2014a).Between 1990 and 2012 the composition of <strong>India</strong>’s energy mix has changedsharply, with traditional biomass (such as wood used <strong>in</strong> heat<strong>in</strong>g and cook<strong>in</strong>g)<strong>in</strong> particular los<strong>in</strong>g share (figure 6). The share of coal <strong>in</strong>creased to almost 45per cent <strong>in</strong> 2012, up from 33 per cent <strong>in</strong> 1990. The low cost and reliability ofcoal, as well as its relative abundance <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong>, made it a preferred energysource <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong>.INDIA’S ELECTRICITY AND COAL MARKETS29
