Needs You!Surgery on Sunday (S.O.S.) is a nonprofitorganization that providesoutpatient surgical services to theworking poor who are uninsuredand do not qualify for federalor state assistance. Patients arereferred from existing organizationsin the community includingthe Fayette County Public HealthDepartment, Hope Center,Nathaniel Mission, Baby Health,Saint Joseph Free Health Clinic,Bluegrass Farm Workers and SalvationArmy. Since the organizationbegan more than two years ago,2,000 patients have been treated.However, a 300 percent increasehas occurred in the number ofpatients in need. S.O.S. performssurgeries one Sunday a month.Volunteers are desperately needed,especially anesthesiologists, nurseanesthetists, pre-op/post-opnurses, orthopaedics and generalsurgeons. ThisSaint Joseph Health System GreenTeam is a result of a CHI initiativeto achieve greener work environments.CHI has partnered withPractice Greenhealth to examinethe environmental initiatives andstructures currently in place andidentify opportunities to improveenvironmental performancethrough energy conservation,mercury elimination andincreased recycling.Currently, Saint Joseph HealthSystem partners with nationalvendors that offer environmentfriendlysupplies and productsfrom reusable gowns and sharpscontainers to recycled copy paperand toner cartridges, censoredlights, and eco friendly chemicals.Through its partnership withCintas Document Management, forexample, it has saved 2,274 trees,50,920 gallons of oil and 938,000gallons of water.
