Back Office NewsMonthly Vouchers.A decision was made at the last Committee meetingthat SABA monthly payments would no longerinclude SABF events on Thursday nights. What hashappened in the past is that SABA has re-imbursedthe SABF for the table fees of SABA monthly payerswho played in the SABF events. Given also that tablefees for Thursday night SABF events are now $2higher than normal SABA table fees, the Committeefeels that it is unfair to monthly payers who don’t playon Thursday nights. Monthly fees have been reducedto (at least partly) compensate for this. The new feesare:Concession $110 (from $125)Full $120 (from $135)This is actually $5 cheaper than the monthly fees werebefore the last increase. There is no change to thecost of monthly vouchers.Pianola.Pianola continues to be a work in progress. Membersmay notice that the master points are now displayedfor each session. We continue to work on a way todisplay the running master sheet, but this appears tobe a little way off yet. Thecompany that installed the panels (EcostarEnvironmental Solutions) would like to offer SABAmembers a discount to have solar power at theirown homes They will also be sponsoring a columnin the Declarer, where members can ask questionsabout solar power, or for that matter, any other ecofriendly systems. Simply email me at the club and Iwill pass on your queries which will be answered inthe following month’s newsletter. Already havesolar power, but aren’t sure if your system isperforming properly? Sharon, from Ecostar willhappily answer those questions as well.As discussed in past months, our membershipnumbers are only finalised at the end of March. This year some 112 members did not renew theirmembership which means our current number nowstands at 865. Although this means we still needanother 70 new members to meet our target, it isvery pleasing to see that the club has 92 moremembers than this time last year. Our nextopportunity to add to the member total is at the endof this month with Term 2 of the classes starting.Once again we encourage members to get familyand friends to nominate for the classes.SABA’s solar power monitoring system is nowconnected to the world wide web, for all to see.1. BRIDGING RELATIONSHIPS.....by Ray Dohnt. As we all travel through this wondrous life, we arecontinually faced with changing fortunes. Be ithealth, wealth or stealth. Often we have little choiceover the outcome. While hard work and stayingpower are good qualities, it is often luck that sets usall apart. Both good and bad. The one thing I canhonestly say about luck, is that it will always change. One way or another. The same can be said for ourrelationships. Let me give you a brief history. Frombirth to death. Both, I am often told, are inevitable.1....Family.... On this one, we have no choice. Weare thrust into a particular family by luck. Pure, unadulterated luck. It would be a bastard if it werenot. The bond of family is strong. It runs in theblood. We tend to keep families for life. Much like aprison sentence. No judge. No jury. Just parents andsiblings. Till death do us part.2....Relatives....Another no brainer. They comealready attached to your family. Like glue, orchewing gum. They can have the bouquet of eitherroses or manure. Often in numbers too many toremember. Often with good reason. Everything fromcousins to in-laws. Pests to outlaws. Death may bethe only way of parting.3....Neighbours....As a child, you have little choiceover who they will be. Your parents, on the otherhand, own all the blame for this one. In my day -everyone in our street knew everyone and everythingin that said street. Good, bad and indifferent. A goodneighbour is like winning cross lotto. Pure joy. Abad neighbour is like stepping in manure. Messy andsmelly.4....Friends....Finally, you receive the power ofchoice. Everything from best friend to close friendand beyond. Even a loner like myself cannot helpbut gather a few of these. They are very important toour well being. Solitude is a good place to visit - buta poor place to stay. In general, one does not actuallymake a friend - you simply end up recognising them.A true friend is someone you can spend all day with(doing nothing) and still enjoy their company.5....Acquaintances....Where to start? There can bemillions of them. From work, sport, social activities, school, prison and yes, even bridge clubs. They canand do teach us many things. Everything thatirritates us about others, can lead us to fullyunderstanding ourselves. Perhaps that is their reasonfor entering our lives. They do not know us well; butthey do know us. Warts and all. A dangerousformula.6...Best Friend....If we are truly lucky, we will findone, two or three of these in our lifetime. Bestfriends are like great memories. Recall them as oftenas you like, a happy memory never wears out. A bestT H E D E C L A R E R P A G E 4friend will encourage you to dream. Implore you tofollow your dreams. Convince you the only wayyour dream will come true is to wake up. Work hard.Try endlessly. Never give up. Should you fail, theywill still be there to keep you on track.7....Antagonist....There is always one. Maybe more.At times in our life, we will alienate many people. For differing reasons. Rightly or wrongly. At leastone of these people will resent our actions. Feelhard done by. Fight back. Become a thorn in ourside. Take on the roll of an adversary. Rightly orwrongly. They tend to rarely go away.8....life Partner....This one is the most difficult of all.It will require many attributes from both parties. Some of these will include love, understanding, beliefs, maturity, trust, common sense and a similarideal of sharing. They will compliment us, ratherthan fulfil us. They have the ability to make our lifefar more enjoyable and complete than living alone. In itself, a huge responsibility that most of us take onat some stage. Truly worthwhile.9....Enemy....Everyone has them. They exist formany reasons.. Good or bad, it will give our lifesome balance. Ying and Yang. Love and Hate. Moreoften than not, they rarely disappear. As SpikeMilligan once said; "Money cannot buy you truefriends, but it does have the ability to get you abetter class of enemy". This is a choice you need tothink strongly about.10....Bridge Partner....O.K. you all knew that thiswas where we were headed. It is not important. It isnot life and death. It is far more serious than thosetwo imposters. Possibly the most preciousrelationship of all. Finding a bridge partner, and Imean a good one, can be nigh impossible. Havepatience with you partner. It is the first, second andthird thing of importance. Hell has no fury like apartner scorned. You will need luck in your search.Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.Ask five bridge partners for advice, and you will getfive different answers. (six if one of them isparanoid). For success in bridge, finding the right partner isparamount. It will involve some mistakes. We learnmuch more from failure than success. Winners tendto be losers who gave it one more try. Once youhave bonded with a partner, enjoy the journey. Enjoyeach other's company like friends or close siblings. So, who makes the best bridge partner? Normallynot a family member, not a friend, not a neighbourand probably not an enemy. So who does this leave?About six billion strangers who exist on this planet. That's a good place to start looking. Good luck withthat.Good Bridging.

NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAMSBarbara TravisMany bridge players think that their first objective inthe bidding is to reach No Trump contracts. I am anadvocate of finding a fit in a Major first, and settlingfor a No Trump contract when there is no major fit.Of course, there are exceptions to this rule and thefollowing two hands from the National Women’sTeams in Canberra both fall into this small category.(I emphasise that it is a small collection of hands, not the norm.)You hold(North)Q85AK87A106K107Auction:West North East SouthPass PassPass 1NT Pass 2HPass 2S Pass 3NTPass ?You’ve shown 15-17 HCP and partner has shown abasically balanced hand with 5 spades and 10-11HCP (they are a passed hand). You have to decidebetween 3NT and 4S. Usually with 3 or 4 cardspade support one bids 4S. This hand, however, falls into my ‘exception’ guidelines: 4-3-3-3 handshape plus all the other suits well held (those 10slook reasonably significant to me in these situationstoo). Consequently, I passed 3NT.Partner’s hand wasAK763103K87532Bear in mind, this was also a Teams event, so it isnot so much a matter of playing in the contractwhich can make the most tricks but it is aboutplaying in the safest contract. At Pairs you have toconsider the contract which scores the most pointsand tricks, which makes things even trickier! As long as spades break 3-2 there are 9 top tricks, and if spades break 4-1 you might need the CAonside for your ninth trick. On the other hand, depending on the club suit, you might not have 10tricks in 4S.The result on the hand was 3NT making 11 (withsome help) and 4S making 9 tricks. [Declarer misguessedthe club position.]In the final of the National Women’s Teams thesame situation arose, this time with our team-mates‘getting it right’.You hold(South)AK8K65K62AKQJAuction:West North East SouthPass Pass 2CPass 2D Pass 2NTPass 3H Pass 3SPass 3NT Pass ?2C followed by 2NT showed a balanced hand of 23-24 HCP. North’s 2D showed 0-3 HCP in any hand, then she transferred and showed a balanced handwith 5 spades, but with a few values or she wouldpass 2NT.Once again South has to decide between 3NT or 4S.As with the previous decision, it is right to pass3NT, given that every suit is stopped and you have a4-3-3-3 hand shape. The quality of the spades addsto the likelihood that you will have 4 or 5 spadetricks. Our team-mates opted to play in 3NT on thisbasis.Partner’s hand wasT H E D E C L A R E R P A G E 5Q6543931048432There were 9 top tricks in 3NT with spadesbehaving, 10 on a red suit lead.At our table, our South chose to correct to 4S,received a club lead (safe) and went down whenboth red aces were in West’s hand.Of course ‘science’ doesn’t always work. The lasthand of the final was a big loss to our team, but Ithink we had the better auction and, despite the lackof success, I still think we were in the superiorcontract:K 10872A6KQJ93AJ9652KA752K86WestEast1D1H2C 2S (1)3D (2) 3H (3)3S (4) 3NT (5)4HPass(1) Fourth suit game forcing (cont’d next page)

(2) Most likely 6 diamonds(3) Either 6 hearts or a really good 5 card suit (I wasdubious about our spade stopper)(4) A creative bid – showing a good hand, suited tohearts(5) An offer to play – a tenuous spade stopperUnfortunately South led a trump which meant that Icould no longer work on trumping spades. Instead Ilooked at creating winners in the diamond suit.I won the heart in hand, cashed the DK, then crossedto dummy’s HA. If diamonds were 3-3 or there wasa short DQ, then I could establish the suit, drawtrumps, and get back to dummy with the CA.T H E D E C L A R E R P A G E 6YOUTH FUNDRAISERPLAYER AUCTIONFeaturing some of South Australia’s top bridgeplayers. Teachers TipsDavid LuskOpen the Right 11 CountsSince Precision made the 11 pointopening part of it’s natural elements,Acol and Standard players havetended to adopt the trend even though their generalsystemic agreements and structures require 12 highcard points for an opening bid.It could be pointed out that a number of adventurouspartnerships have moved into the realms of 11-141NT openings and even lower but, once incorporatedas systemic, such openings simply alter thearithmetic as these ranges can be accommodated inthe same way as 12-14 and 15-17.If your systemic expectation is that an opening bid is12-up, but that 11 highs are tolerated on the righthand, perhaps more effort should be put intoidentifying what the ‘right’ hand means.Let’s look at an 11 point hand: J3 AQ964 Q765 Q3Would you call this the right hand? I wouldn’t. Theheart suit does little to compensate for your lack ofvalues and there are two soft cards placed in yourdoubleton suits where they are less likely to do well.So what criteria should we apply to establish what isthe right hand for an 11 point opening?Source of tricks. Hands become more attractivewhen there is at least one suit that provides a strongsource of tricks. One guideline for opening light isany hand which looks good for a weak 2 but isabove your agreed range. If your weak 2 (orequivalent) range is 6-10, then a serious weak 2candidate of 11 HCP should be opened with a call ofone. My agreement for weak 2 openings is usually 6-9, so good 10s with quality 6 card suits arefrequently opened at the one level. For example: KQJ965 3 A76 954 is automaticallyopened 1. However, with KQ1095 J5 Q4 Q53 , I would be morelikely to open 2.Honour tricks (quick tricks). Understanding the oldCulbertson Honour Trick count is very helpful foridentifying the ‘right’ hand.A or KQ in the same suit, = 1Honour trickAQ in the same suit = 1.5 Honour tricksK (not singleton) = 0.5 Honour tricks.T H E D E C L A R E R P A G E 9Whenever I am contemplating an opening bid on amarginal 11 count, I check to see if I have 2.5honour tricks. For example, I would rather open 1on this hand a) below, than hand b)a) A542 AQJ87 95 76b) A542 A9865 QJ5 6Hand (a) contains 2.5 Honour tricks and hand (b)does not.Rebid options. Before opening a marginal hand, think about potential rebid problems. On hand a)above, you can open 1 and rebid 2 especiallyplaying 4 card Acol. On hand b) bidding your heartsuit twice is not an attractive option.Concentration of values. On the above hands, doesn’t that red Q-J look so much better when it ispart of your heart suit? There are advantages to getting into the bidding, butyou do have a partner, and if you find yourselfopening on 11 HCP hands reasonably frequently, atleast make sure that you are doing so on the right 11counts rather than the wrong ones.AQ4“OUCH”On a recent Friday we came down toa four card ending something likethis…9K57-KJ98J -- --A102-2Look at the pain caused by the play of the lasttrump, the 2Discarding a , makes dummy’s 7 good.If you discard a then your partner has to keeptheir spade, thus setting up the s.Discarding the sets up the finesse. There is nothing more to do than say “Well played”and get on with the next hand.[Hand provided by Warren Neill]

MONTHLY WINNERSThere are a number of issues to do with monthlywinners. First, we are still working on a way forPianola to display the monthly mastersheet. In themeantime we are still tracking the results manually,so(a)(b)Monthly winners are being issued positionalmasterpoints and these are being reported tothe ABF Masterpoint Centre each month.Monthly mastersheets are being produced inhard copy and placed on the notice board. This enables directors to give the placegettersthe appropriate number of vouchers.Secondly, the SABA Tournament Committee (TC)has identified a deficiency with regard to the newway monthly winners are calculated. Now that thereis no de-rating of scores across the sections, morepeople from the lower grades are winning vouchers(This is a good thing, and one of the reasons for thechange). However, we did overlook the fact thatthere are events which have an honour board and/oradditional cash prize money (from sponsorship). The TC has decided you must play in A grade to beeligible for the top 3 places in these events. Thisdoesn’t affect the standings for the monthlyvouchers, but means that there may be occasionswhere the winner of a sponsored event doesn’t come1st in the monthly mastersheet. This has alreadyoccurred in March. The Rio Clarke Pairs is asponsored event with additional prize money, playedon Tuesday mornings. Monthly vouchers (and finalplacing masterpoints) were distributed to the top 4placegetters, but the prize money went to pairs thatfinished 3rd, 5th and 7th.MONDAY AM.1st Jim May & Wendy Andrews2nd Ros & Don Karunaratne3rd Brian Poole & Denise Buttrose4th Graham Terry & Tony Andrews5th Sue Robinson & Jean Boomer6th Xenia Kleut & Lucienne Bagley7th Diana Higgins & Meredith ColemanMONDAY PM BROWNTREE HANDICAP1st John Francis & John Zollo2nd Leonie Clarke & Patricia Pak-Poy3rd George Smolanko & Justin WilliamsTUESDAY AM1st Barbara Wing & Toni Harvey2nd Frances Berry & Margaret Banks3rd Pam Morgan-King & Judy Hone4th Paddy McErlean & Yvonne BlewettT H E D E C L A R E R P A G E 11TUESDAY PM1st Rianne Wright & Mia Esvelt2nd Chris Nettle & Rod Burnell3rd Janice Paltridge & Janet Hegarty4th Marlene Haslam & Reg Elborough5th Eve Shillito & Lindsay Wills6th Robert Horne & Jenny HorneWEDNESDAY AM1st Wendy Webster & Helen Luxton2nd Yvette Bolaffi & Claire Geller3rd Joy Myers & Helen Tassie4th Jan Lokan & Jan GeddesWEDNESDAY PM1st David Anderson & Shamini Hoole2nd John Smith & Angela NorrisTHURSDAY AM1st Helen & Robert Fleet2nd Rama Patel & Lorrie Day3rd Varn Treleggan & Don Parker4th Barry Specht & Patricia Bland5th Gwen Rothwell & Julie Corrighan6th Emilia Tyborczyk & Jan GeddesFRIDAY AM1st Warren Neill & Andrew Eddy2nd Gary Deaton & Arnold Volframs3rd Denise Webber & Margaret Fenton4th Kay Bumford & Liz Angel5th Judith Roberts & Wendy AndrewsFRIDAY PM1st Janice Paltridge & Reg Elborough2nd Roger & Margaret PorterSATURDAY AM1st Bill Nash & Alex McAuley2nd Rita Sziller & Gizella Mickicics
