Food ServiceDena French, MFN, RD, LDDirector of Food ServiceThe <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> Food Service Department provideshealthy, well rounded meals at a low cost. Also we provide free andreduced priced meals to students from qualifying households. Last yearwe made many changes to our menus in response to the new school mealregulations set forth by the USDA which require more whole grains,fruits and vegetables and aim to lower the fat and sodium in foods. Thesestandards are necessary due to the overwhelming amount of researchshowing that the foods we eat play an important role in living a long,healthy life. <strong>School</strong> meals provide the nutrition necessary for childrento feel good, perform better and lay the groundwork for lifelong healthyeating habits.In addition to the new standards, we have considered the suggestionsfrom parents and students when planning our menus for the upcomingyear. Youmust have an account on the ParentPortal to use the online option.Please visit the Parents section ofthe website to fill out a consent formfor Parent Portal.Parents are encouraged to sendmoney to cover meals for the entireweek, or month. If sending money,please write the student’s name, andhis/her teacher’s name, on the outsideof the envelope. Payments forelementary students may be placedin the payment box located outsidethe elementary school office. Middleand high school students may givetheir deposits to the cashier whenthey purchase their meals.The amount of each meal is deductedfrom the account each time apurchase is made using the student’sassigned PIN number. The PIN israndomly assigned by the computerand tracks each participant’s runningaccount balance. FERPA Notice: Your RightsThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords to parents/guardiansof students, and to students themselves who are over 18years of age (“eligible student”), certain rights with respect to the student’seducation records maintained by the <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong>.These rights are outlined below:1. The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within45 days of the day the district receives a written request for access. Parentsor eligible students should submit to the school principal a writtenrequest that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. The principalwill make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible studentof the time and place where the records may be inspected.2. The right to request the amendment of the student’s education recordsthat the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate or misleading.Parents or eligible students may ask the district to amend a recordthey believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the Superintendentof <strong>School</strong>s clearly identifying the part of the record they wantchanged and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the districtdecides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligiblestudent, the district will notify the parent or eligible student of the decisionand advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request foramendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedureswill be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of theright to a hearing.3. The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable informationcontained in the student’s education records, except to the extentthat FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception whichpermits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials withlegitimate educational interests. A school official includes a personemployed by the district as an administrator, supervisor, instructor,counselor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff andlaw enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the district’s schoolboard; a person or company with whom the district has contracted toperform a special task such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant,or therapist; or a parent, student or other person serving on an officialcommittee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee or assisting anotherschool official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has alegitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an educationalrecord in order to fulfill his or her responsibilities for the district.The Voluntary Interdistrict Choice Corporation (VICC) and its officers,employees and agents are also school officials with legitimate educationalinterests, because they act for and on behalf of the district withrespect to transfer students and the transfer program, and because theyseek to advance the interests of both. A transfer student’s attendancerecords and other educational records relevant to the student’s participationin the program or to the program itself may accordingly be disclosedto VICC without obtaining written consent from the parent/guardianor eligible student. Upon request, the district also discloses educationrecords without consent to officials of a school district in which a studentseeks or intends to enroll.4. The right to file a complaint with the U. S. Department of Educationconcerning alleged failures by the district to comply with the requirementof FERPA. Activity BusResident students stayingafter school for school-sponsoredactivities will be transportedhome on the activity bus Mondaythrough Thursday. Thebus leaves at exactly 3:40 p.m.(Secondary, only) from the buscircle. To ride the bus, studentsmust sign up with the supervisingteacher.Students are required tohave a boarding pass which isobtained from the supervisoryteacher. Students will not beallowed on the bus without aboarding pass. There is NO activitybus on Fridays or the daybefore a holiday.Bus Fleet HonoredFor the 11th consecutive year,the <strong>District</strong>’s transportationdepartment has been awardedthe Certificate of Total FleetExcellence by the Missouri StateHighway Patrol.State inspectors thoroughlyexamined each of the <strong>District</strong>’sbuses, including brakes, steering,safety equipment, emergencyexits and lights, as well ascrossing control arms. More than150 individual items are checkedon each bus during their yearlyinspection.
