A POWERFUL VOICEIN THE FIGHT AGAINSTYOUNG ADULT CANCER.

In the spring of 2005, Andrew McMahon and his band Jack’s Mannequinembarked on their first U.S. headlining tour. Before the tour ended,Andrew paid a visit to his voice doctor due to health concerns. The nextmorning, Andrew was admitted to the hospital after receiving alarmingblood work results. He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.313From his experiences, Andrew realized the gap in services and supportfor the young adult cancer population. In an effort to initiate changeand provide a voice for the generations of young adults who have beendiagnosed with cancer, Andrew founded the Dear Jack Foundation inJuly of 2006.THE DEAR JACK FOUNDATION’S MISSION is to supportthe Adolescent & Young Adult cancer population throughadvocacy and funding of initiatives that target their unique setof needs.

DEFINING THE AYA POPULATION.The Adolescent & Young Adult cancer population (AYA) includespatients and survivors BETWEEN THE AGES OF 15 & 39. THISGROUP IS THE MOST UNDERSERVED WITHIN THE CANCERCOMMUNITY, with a lack of specifically targeted servicesand protocols starting from diagnosis to institutional supportpost treatment.AYAs FACE UNIQUE ISSUES that are often overlooked bytreatment providers & the cancer community at large. Concernsabout fertility, insurance, finances, employment, and personalrelationships can lead to feelings of isolation, alienation, and loneliness. THEY NEED A COMMUNITY & SUPPORTSYSTEM that provides on a personal and emotional level.CANCER is theDISEASE #1 KILLERin Young Adults313

THE FUTURE OF DJF. [ A note from Andrew: ]“While much of our work has been through strategic partnerships, WE ARE EAGER TOBEGIN IMPLEMENTATIONS OF ACTIVATIONS CONCEIVED, FUNDED, ANDORGANIZED EXCLUSIVELY BY DJF. The first of these activations will be onedayseminars focused on providing tools for AYA patients to make a healthytransition from treatment to survivorship. When I was diagnosed, I learned quickly about the struggles facing young adultswith cancer. I’ve seen firsthand how focusing on this population and their needscan lift the burden of these struggles and fill those impacted with hope. THROUGHYOUR DONATION, YOU CAN HELP US TOUCH MORE LIVES AND BRINGMORE AWARENESS TO THIS UNDERSERVED COMMUNITY.Sincerely,’’3www.dearjacAndrew McMahon
