Those selected toreceive these stimulus grants opt for careers as physician-scientists(94%), publish research results in peer-reviewed publications, andare able to leverage the initial Foundation grant support to attractother funding, including NIH RO1 grants, with a 23-fold return on theinitial grant amount. To build upon our success, we are looking at expanded opportunitiesfor you. This is a time of great opportunity and challenge forgynecologic cancer research. The Foundation for Women’s Cancer Research Grants and AwardsCommittee continues to seek additional funding to support expandedresearch priorities. These research priorities complement the Societyof Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) Research Summit report, “Pathwaysto Progress.” Of special importance is increased funding for cervical, uterine, primary peritoneal, vaginal and vulvar cancer research. Wewelcome your suggestions about potential sponsors.Additionally, the Foundation is seeking funding for a series of newtypes of research opportunities.• Innovative grants: These grants would provide funding for creativeand imaginative research proposals that are not sufficientlyadvanced or developed to obtain funding from traditional sources.• Paired grants: Junior investigators would join with seniorinvestigators for grants lasting two to three years.• Extend the current, highly successful stimulus or “seed” grantprogram to include all gynecologic cancers, and offer theopportunity for competitive renewals at the conclusion of the oneyearresearch grant. This year’s brochure contains a list of funding opportunities anddetailed instructions about the application process. The Foundation’sResearch Grants and Awards Committee, listed below, carefullyconsiders each application — always a challenge given thecompetitive nature of the program. Please consider applying to become part of an elite group ofsuccessful physician-scientists committed to the well-being of womenat risk for, and those who are affected by, gynecologic malignancies.Sincerely,Anil K. Sood, MDFoundation for Women’s CancerResearch Grants & Awards Committee Chairman1
