KALEIDOSCOPENovember 2012Volume 55 # 111-13-13Northern California Corvette AssociationAmerica’s Oldest Corvette Club

Americas OldestCorvette ClubIn July of 1956, two Corvette owners waved and stopped to talk.Corvettes were few in numbers then and several weeks couldpass before encountering another. These drivers discussed thestarting of a Corvette Club.By July 15, 1956, an informal meeting of Corvette owners haddecided to establish the Northern California Corvette Association. These early Corvette owners met frequently at each other’shomes with their numbers increasing each month. On March 28, 1957, an initial group of 35 met at Daily Chevroletin Oakland to establish the by-laws. By then Josh Hogue, SanFrancisco Examiner’s sports car event columnist suggested thatthis group combine with the one meeting at Les Vogel’s Chevrolet. On May 9, 1957 NCCA was incorporated and forty memberselected Roy Storey, a TV and radio sportscaster and Corvetteparticipant in SCCA‘s regional races, president. Sandy Greenblatwas elected Vice President, Patty Gellenbeck Secretaryand John Zeh treasurer. The charter membership for NCCA wasclosed at the end of May 1957 listing forty-seven members.Table of Contents—-This Month’s Articles —-Board of Directors: out going 4President’s Column 4Board Member Columns 5-8Minutes from GBM 6Presidents Run 9Veteran’s Day 16NCCA Fall Banquet 17ChumpCar 18New Board 20?? NCCA presented Northern California’sthird autocross. One hundred fifty cars drove the course at theMilpitas Ford Plant. This series set the standard for auto crossingin Northern California. Though Roy Storey was soon transferredto Hollywood by CBS, he helped NCCA to properly startas a competing club.NCCA is still participating in auto crossing, drag races, trackracing and car shows. The club is a the oldest member of theWestern States Corvette Council (WSCC), joining in 1966. Wehave evolved into more of a social club over the years with thefocus on day and weekend trips. In recent years interest hasincreased in racing, with members taking trophies in drag racing, autocross races and entering more and more track days atThunderhill, Laguna Seca, Infineon and Buttonwillow racetracks.NCCA celebrated its 50 th anniversary in 2007 by inviting pastpresidents to a dinner dance where we shared memorabilia .Our calendar is filled each January with events for the comingyear that include trips to an assortment of locations, car shows, our annual fall banquet and Christmas party.Vette Magic, an all Corvette Drag Race and Car Show, issponsored by NCCA each summer. Each year this eventdraws a large number Corvette racers and spectators fromnorthern California and the surrounding states.NCCA is a valuable member of our community, as we contributeto several charitable organizations each year throughour charitable foundation.Front/Back cover: Front—Back— Me, See Ya

The proposal took place at Doug’s50 th birthday party. Best wishes from all of us to you.It is hard to believe it is November already and that I havebeen in the President’s roll for a year. I have enjoyed thejob as I did the Publication Director for the three previousyears and as I’m sure I will BMAL when this roll ends.NCCA is a great organization because of great members. How can one not enjoy it?Carole and I seemed to group our events close togetherthis year with three within a month: Shooting, Ledson andthe Presidents Run. It makes finding time for work difficult. But who cares! This is more fun than work. This month we say farewell to a number of board memberswho are leaving and welcome new board members. The rotation of a board is good for any organization as itbrings fresh ideas and enthusiasm. I would like to thankthe outgoing members and welcome the incoming. We have our big social events coming up and I hope themembership will turn out in force for the Fall Banquet andChristmas Party. Michelle has put a lot of effort into it andthese events are always fun. This year thanks to Tim Sullivanwe are holding them at his HOA club house which iswell located for most of us and we have the building toourselves. NCCA is underwriting a portion of the cost sobe sure to sign up and get your checks to Michelle rightaway if you have not already. Carole and I will be lookingforward to seeing you all.510-278-7763 charitable@nccacorvettes.orgWebmaster:Jim Wells925-443-2707 web@nccacorvettes.org4

She will do a great job, I hope everyonehelps her out by sending her photos and articles. That’s alwaysthe challenge in putting the K together. I’ve enjoyedputting this together for the past twelve months. Somemonths were a challenge for me because I want to be planningand wrenching on my C4 race car and need every momentI can get outside work and all the other things in ourlives. That will be my focus now because I really miss beingout there autocrossing and getting out on the great roadcourses we have here in California. I’m a little better engineeringand wrenching than typing, I hope. Thanks to my wonderful wife Myra, who lets me do prettymuch what I want to do while hoping I don’t spend muchmore than a years retirement with my project. Also, a big Thank You to everyone who helped out with articles and pictures, hope you enjoy my last K. I look forward toseeing you out there next year. I also look forward to seeing the new C7, 1-13-13.Enjoy the Ride!

drivers for most events, and it’s wise to have a couple of crew guysas part of the team. Get people on your team that know what end of ascrewdriver to use and can think clearly at 3:19am when a wheelbearing starts to disintegrate.Welcome to the ChumpCar World Series! ChumpCar is NorthAmerica's home for $500 race cars and REAL endurance road racing.Real racing, real tracks, real drivers and really cheap cars! We're allabout endurance races that range from 7-hours to 24-hours long...and, even longer! ChumpCar has the distinction of holding the longestclosed-course endurance road race in the world... 25 hours, 25minutes and 25 seconds - the 25:25:25.So, why do we do this and who is this series for? This series is for gear-heads; for people who love driving and drivingfast. It's not about gimmicks or theatrics. Rather, it's for grassrootsrace teams and for Chumps like you that have always wanted to goroad racing without all the hassle. It's about 'Joe Average' and almostrace-readycars.ChumpCar is a throw-back to the era when racing was fun andcheap... when Bondo beat carbon-fiber; when a crescent wrench wasthe most valuable tool in your box; when home-made engineeringmade everyone sit up and take notice; and when adding a little themeto your car didn't get you laughed off of pit lane. Those were good times... and they're back. Here are the Basic RulesNot including the required safety equipment that you’ll need – rollcage, racing seat, racing harness -- your car must be valued at lessthan $500. That’s valued at, as assessed by the general market, notwhat you paid for it.Personal safety gear includes a Snell SA helmet and SFI-FIA certifieddriver's gear.Strip out all the interior and take out all the glass, except the windshield.Install the roll cage, seat and harness. Add some numbers andyou have just created a $500 race car. Okay, so there’s more to it thanthat, but not much. Read the rules to fill-in the blanks. You can upgrade the brakes a little but don’t even think of addingany trick racing suspension crap. Tires are up to you… as long asthey’re DOT legal and rated at 190 or higher for treadwear.ChumpCar has various race formats, but they’re all endurance racing…ranging from 7 hours to 24-hours. You’ll need a minimum of 4If you cheat or screw-up or both… you'll be docked laps. If you cometo Tech Inspection with a car that’s worth $1,500… plan on startingthe race about 100 laps down from everyone else. You can still run inthe race and you’ll have a great time… but you’ll never win. If thatdoesn’t bother you, you’re our kind of Chump! After the 5,342 email inquiries we received from you chumps justyesterday, we're pleased to present the 2013 ChumpCar World SeriesSchedule. Go to www.ChumpCar.com to view schedule and be preparedto drool.Registration for the 2013 will open in mid- to late-December. Be onthe lookout for this announcement as well. Any questions, pleasedirect to your appropriate ChumpCar regional director found on ourCONTACT page.Along with this new schedule, we recommend that you familiarizeyourself with the 2013 Rules.CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS WITH CHUMPCAR! SonomaRaceway & Laguna SecaThere are still two very special ChumpCar races this year at two"bucket list" tracks...Sonoma Raceway on 8-9 December and MazdaLaguna Seca Raceway for New Year's Eve, 31 December. While theSonoma event is the West Region Chumpionship, any and all teamsare invited to participate (just not in contention for the Chumpionship). In fact, 3/4 of the field will probably be running just for braggingrights. For Laguna Seca, this event is limited to only 35 cars, perthe track. Come out and enjoy the race of your lifetime, food, music& festivities. There are a couple of spots remaining for each event; toregister:For Sonoma's "How the West Was Won: Western RegionalChumpionship," visit www.ChumpCar.com and click on ENTER.for the Supplemental Rules & Event Schedule. For all information regarding New Year's Eve at Laguna Seca, and to register (note, this is a site separate from the usual ChumpCarregistration). Trust me, it's gonna be a party in the paddock all nightlong! My C4 already has cost me way over the$500 but maybe someone has an old car torace? If not these are a kick to go see. LagunaSeca March 31, Buttonwillow Dec 7-8.Demolition derby on a road course, so I hear, but much safer. I’ll help drive if someonewants to race.18
