What is CMDDA1?CMDDA1 is an ACS assessment (also with training for those who are not fully conversant will BS 7967) thattests the gas safety competence of an operative in the work of carrying out carbon monoxideand carbon dioxide room monitoring & combustion performance testing using electronic portable gas analyserson domestic gas appliances following indication of fumes, smells, spillage or leakage of combustion products COdetector activation etc., by both a practical and knowledge and understanding assessment.CMDDA1 will be required :- Follow up a visit by National Grid (Transco) – where fumes have been suspected SGAS For Local Authorities and nominated subcontractors responding to calls from their tenants Where a customer suspects fumes due to activation of a CO alarm Where a customer suspects fumes due to signs of spillage or smells being emitted from an applianceGas Safe Register will have a separate category for CMDDA1 and only operatives with the new CMDDA1assessment will be deemed competent to attend such occurrences.SGAS have put together a 2 days course, which includes the assessment for CMDDA1.The course content includes:- Advanced combustion theory Types of analyser and CO2 monitoring equipment BS 7967-1,2,3,4 Carbon monoxide in dwellings and combustion performance of gas fired appliances HSE guidance - HS(EH)40 HSE guidance - HS(L)56 Additional requirements for ventilation and flues for oil and solid fuel appliances Simulated room CO build up testing using the latest „state of the art‟ training simulation equipment /software Practical procedures required to fulfill the requirements of the investigation Completing relevant reports and documentationCourse duration2 daysCourse fees (training & assessment)£350 + VATIf training is not required, we also offer „assessment only‟ – Price on request.Page 4

Category 1Category 1 applicants are experienced gas fitting operatives from within or outside of the United Kingdom.Please note. Applicants who would normally fall into category 1 but a) have had a gas competency certificate orqualification withdrawn in the past. Or b) Been deemed incompetent in the past in matters of gas safety, mustcategorize themselves as Category 2 and provide to the assessment centre full details of the qualification withdrawalor circumstances in which they were deemed incompetent.a) They are:i. Seeking to renew expiring or expired certificates of gas safety competence i.e. HSC ACoP, ACS or GasServices N/SVQs or,ii.iii.Seeking assessment and certification to extend their range of gas work, or,Foreign nationals seeking to obtain certificates of gas safety competence enabling them to meet UK gaswork requirements. Please note applicants in this category must present evidence of their gas fittingqualifications and experience to the Assessment Centre. (When this <strong>info</strong>rmation is not in English, theapplicant must provide and attach a translation of this <strong>info</strong>rmation to the application form.)Category 1 specific application conditionsApplicants applying for Initial or Reassessment must present to the Assessment Centre all appropriate certificates ofgas safety competence currently or previously held.The applicant must declare, by deleting the code on the application form accordingly, whether they:a) Are registered with The Council for Registered Gas Installers (CORGI), either:i. SEO. : As a self employed operative. (including the corgi business registration number.) orii. CRE : As an employee of a CORGI registered employer (including the corgi business registrationnumber.) orb) Are not registered or covered by CORGI registration.(NR)Category 2Category 2 Applicants are persons applying for certification who do not fall into category 1 or 3. For example anindividual who is seeking gas certification for the first time and is currently qualified in a trade allied to gas work. E.g.Plumber, HVAC technician. Refrigeration engineer.Please note. Category 2 also includes Applicants who would normally fall into category 1 but a) have had a gascompetency certificate or qualification withdrawn in the past. Or b) been deemed incompetent in the past in matters ofgas safety.Applicants must provide evidence that they hold qualifications relevant to the area of gas work they are seeking toobtain certification in.Please note. The qualifications submitted must have enabled competence to be demonstrated in the generic workactivities associated with fossil fuelled appliances/equipment and/or pipework installation, including, any of thefollowing work activities, flueing or ventilation or the installation, maintenance or commissioning of such appliances.Applicants must present evidence to the Assessment Centre prior to the commencement of assessment.Examples of appropriate qualifications include:a) Plumbing craft qualification or N/SVQ (oil and/or solid fuel options) – suitable initially for domestic orcommercial central, water heating or pipework installation.b) Pipefitter/welder craft qualification or N/SVQ – suitable initially for commercial pipework, pipeworkcommissioning and meter installation.Page 13


c) Heating and Ventilation craft qualification or N/SVQ – suitable initially for commercial pipework andappliance installationd) Refrigeration Engineer/fitter craft qualification or N/SVQ – suitable initially for commercial appliance andpipework installationPlease note. Applicants in this category must also provide written evidence to the Assessment Centre confirming thatthey have undertaken „on the job‟ gas installation and/or maintenance training and have experience of gas work thathas been carried out under the direct supervision of a competent operative(s) employed by a CORGI registeredbusiness, that would support their application for the range of assessment to be undertaken.Please note The duration and content of the “on the job” training programme will be determined by the scope of gaswork to be undertaken. Evidence in the form of a portfolio of the completion of such a training programme must bepresented to the Assessment Centre prior to the operative taking assessments.This evidence must be in writing from the employer detailing precisely the areas of gas work previously carried out.Category 2 specific application conditionsApplicants with relevant qualifications and experience must declare whether they have:a) Had a gas competency certificate or qualification withdrawn in the past.b) Been deemed incompetent in the past in matters of gas safety and if so provide details for review by theCertification Body.Please note. Applicants who would normally fall into category 1 but have been designated category 2 because a)they have had a gas competency certificate or qualification withdrawn in the past. Or b) they have at some time beendeemed incompetent in matters of gas safety, must provide to the assessment centre full details of the qualificationwithdrawal or circumstances in which they were deemed incompetent. Prior to any assessment taking place theassessment centre will notify the Certification Body of the situation and then the Certification Body will make adecision regarding the application after a full review of the circumstances (which may include communication withCorgi or the applicants employer or other relevant parties) and keep a record of the outcome of the review for sixyears.)Category 3Category 3 applicants are new entrants to the gas industry.Please note it is considered that such applicants are those without a relevant related qualification and/or experience,entering gas industry employment for the first time or changing career direction.Category 3 specific conditionsAn applicant in this category is one that has not been able to provide acceptable evidence of relevant qualificationsand gas work experience. Therefore the application will be rejected.Please note.Individuals in this category are advised to seek training and experience which will result in attainment of aNational/Scottish Vocational Qualification (N/SVQ) in Gas Services, Installation and Maintenance at Level II or Ill or toobtain employment with a registered business who is willing to provide an auditable extended period of company „inhouse‟ gas training programme and organisational support to the operative prior to taking ACS assessment.Page 14
