Citations:University <strong>of</strong> ConnecticutAllLast Revised: September 2001UCONN Standard Operating Procedure• <strong>Flammable</strong>s stored near ignition sources, heat, flames.<strong>Flammable</strong> liquids must be stored under appropriate conditions at all times.<strong>Flammable</strong>s should not be stored near electrical outlets, vacuum pumps, and anyother heat source. <strong>Storage</strong> in cabinets with electrical wiring shall be avoided. Ifthe storage can not be moved a work order shall be placed to remove the outletand wiring from the storage cabinet.• <strong>Storage</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> flammable material must be labeled.The label can be either a red flammable diamond sticker. Or a sign statingflammable storage. These signs or labels are used by emergency personal inthe event <strong>of</strong> an emergency.• Rated flammable cabinet.It is strongly recommended that a flammable storage cabinet be purchasedfor ‘large flammable storage’ (>5 gallons). <strong>Storage</strong> <strong>of</strong> flammable material inexcess <strong>of</strong> 5 gallons creates a fire hazard. A storage unit can be used toaccommodate a group <strong>of</strong> labs in an area. (Note: storage <strong>of</strong> hazardous wastemust be done on a per room basis. Federal EPA Law)• <strong>Flammable</strong>s storage in an appropriate refrigerator.<strong>Flammable</strong>s must be stored in an appropriate refrigerator.
