HOW FAR WE’VE COME IN 30 YEARS!Tom EricksonBoard ChairKristi Hall-JiranExecutive DirectorEnvision a newborn child, held in her mother’s arms. Themother wonders how she can provide for her child, knowing she can barely provide for herself. Though tired, she is strong and determined and envisions a future for herchild that is far better than anything in her own past. Each year as her child grows older, she sees in her eyesgreater hope, greater potential, a brighter and better future.Thirty years later, where a child once stood now stands asuccessful young woman using all that she has learned tomake a difference in the world. This young woman is not waiting for the world to dictatewhat she can or should do, but she is leading where shewants to go and driving to make changes around her.The mother beams with pride with what has occurred overthe last 30 years; she is also inspired by what the next 30years may hold. The Community Violence Intervention Center, celebrating30 years in 2010, exists because of the tireless efforts ofthose who founded it, “CVIC’s Mothers,” driven by a desireto make the future better for those abused, like themselves. We are certain that, if those CVIC Mothers walked into thefront door of CVIC today, they would be beaming withpride at what has been accomplished to date. Saving Lives!Rebuilding Lives! Ending Violence! These are not just words, these are not just dreams–they are reality. The initial founders, the current staff and all those inbetween, in addition to all of our financial and volunteerpartners, are directly responsible for the tremendoussuccess of what CVIC has accomplished and what CVIC willaccomplish in the future.Over the last 30 years, we cannot definitively say how manylives have been saved, how many lives have been rebuilt, orhow much violence has been avoided. However, we canput a value to it: Priceless! We are all looking forward tothe next 30 years.
