The Great Ethiopian RunAlex Chapman, mum ofLily (2G) and trustee ofThe Paragon’s chosencharity, Ethiopiaid, ran theGreat Ethiopian Run to raisemoney – here she shares herstory…In November I took agroup of 10 people (mainlyfrom Bath) to take part inthe Great Ethiopian Run toraise money for Ethiopiaid.Amongst the group weretwo Prior parents, SaraLoxton and Guy Woods. Before we left we were fullof trepidation. We knewthat Ethiopia was the homeof long-distance runnersand has produced greatOlympians llike TiruneshDibaba, the 5,000 metresfemale world-record holder, and Haile Gebre Selassie, arguably the greatest longdistance runner of all time.We also knew it was hot andat high altitude, and that37,000 people take part. How were we, a groupof fairly middle-agedparents from Somerset, going to cope?We arrived in AddisAbaba and had a fewdays to acclimatize tothe heat and altitude. We went to visit some ofthe projects that we hadraised money for. We visitedThe Fistula Hospital wherewomen are treated forfistula, a devastatingbirth injury that leaveswomen incontinent. We metpatients whowere recovering fromsurgery – smiling intheir hospital beds sograteful for a cure fromsuch a humiliatingand tragic condition. We were told aboutone woman who hadhidden away in a smallshed for seven yearshoping that the urinewould dry up. Whenshe arrived at thehospital she was lessthan four stone andwas unable to walkbecause of musclewastage. With gentlecare, physiotherapyand nutritional food, the hospital staff were ableto build up herstrengthso she could be operatedon. Now she can start torebuild her lifeand returnto her village. We also visited a streetchildren’sbreakfastprogrammewhere we metlots of happy and livelychildren, all keen to shakeour hands. We had a tourof a school and walked into one classroom wherethe children were singingAmharic songs andclapping. We also went to theMenagesha home fordisabled children that helpschildren with conditionslike polio and club foot,to become more mobilethrough surgery andprosthetic limbs andmobility aids. I witnessedone teenage boy who wasa double amputee put on apair of prosthetic legs andwalk upright for the firsttime. It was an incrediblymoving moment. He lookedconfident and proud. After our project visitswe felt inspired to dothe run. Nothing couldhave prepared us for theatmosphere. I had heardthat it was the highest andloudest 10K in the worldand it is true. Everyonewas singing and dancingand pressing hooters atthe start and there wereThe Paragraph Page 2

continued…bands playing Reggae andEthiopian music alongthe route. Everyone waswearing the same T-shirtso you really felt part ofsomething. At 7km we wereall sprayed with a giant hoseto cool us off and peoplewere throwing water ateach other and dancing inthe puddles. It was morelike a street carnival than arace. By the end my cheekmuscles were hurting fromsmiling so much!Luckily, we all finished therun respectably. Guy Woodseven managed to do it in 43minutes which, consideringthealtitude, was incredible. We spent the last couple ofdays in Lalibela and visitedthe ancient rock-hewnchurches and relaxed inthe stunning mountainouslandscape to recover. Itreally was a heartwarmingand inspiring trip. Weraised over £10,000 forEthiopiaid which will godirectly to the projects wevisited and we all came backencouraged by what we hadseen. As one member of thegroup said, ‘I was worriedI was going to see povertyand despair but what I sawwas laughter and hope.’Alex is looking forpeople to take part inthe Great Ethiopian Runthis November. If youare interested in joiningher, please contact herat alexandrachapman@me.comFor more information onEthiopiaid and The GreatEthiopian Run please seetheir website.http://ethiopiaid.org.uk/African InitiativesParagon parents and children surpassedthemselves, raising over £450 in this year’sYear 4 cake sale against a target of £295!The idea was formed following a talk tothe school by Bristol based charity, AfricanInitiatives. They came into the school to run aworkshop with the Year 4s about Tanzania andthe barriers that Maasai school girls face.Normally Maasaiwomen are expected to concentrate onbuilding and repairing houses, fetching firewood andwater, and milking animals, as well as raising and feedingchildren and cooking for the male family members. Thelack of educated and professional Maasai women to fightfor gender-equality and against patriarchal householdstructures is therefore self-perpetuating.The Year 4 cake sale will help make such an importantdifference. The PTA has generously dontated a further£50 so we can fund a year of education for not one, buttwo Tanzanian girls. More info about this initiative can befound at www.african-initiatives.org.ukThe Paragraph Page 3

Chronicles of a Domestic Disasterith regard to the world ofWcelebrity culture, I often findmyself somewhat clueless in the faceof other’s enthusiasm. Just as whenI was a child, kindly adults wouldpoint out things of note – buzzards, badgers and so on. I was neverquick enough to spot them, even ifI had known what I was looking forwhich I usually didn’t, and so it is for,me with famous faces. My powers of recognition beingpoor, I am very likely to have no ideawho I am talking to and so have mademany clanging social gaffs – mostembarrassingly once asking an exPrime Minister (Ted Heath) what hedid for a living! It is, however, almostworse when I do recognise someoneas the tendency is then to presumeactual acquaintanceship. Whenliving in London, I was convincedthat I must be as well-known toTrevor McDonald and AndrewMarr as they were to me, so wouldwave with cheerful exuberance onlyto be greeted with the politely blanksmiles of men who think they maywell about to be assaulted by a loony.Living now in the wilds of ruralshire,I have fewer such momentsof shamed realisation but, nonetheless, recently managed torecapture some lost form. Ongoing up to the Big City on a LittleExpedition – to listen to a Lectureby an eminent writer, Lunch withWorking Husband and Dine withan old school friend – I was a littleover-excited by such an unusuallymud and child-free programmeof loveliness.Having planned my outfitcarefully, so as to preclude themoth-eaten, muddy and biscuitcrumbedlook that is the height offashion in my neck of the woods, and wrestled my feet into actualshoes rather than my belovedboots, I was ready to do battle withthe Metropolis. Meeting variousladies of my acquaintance at thestation produced a rather carnivalatmosphere on the platform and ledto our being eyed with acute dislikeand suspicion by the commutingpublic. Toting a bag full to burstingwith magazines and catalogues thatI had saved especially for the journey,I was selfishly eager to lose mychums once on board, so headed forthe Carriage of Trappist Silencevaguely citing ‘letters to write’ as myexcuse and sinking into my solitaryseat with the ecstatic sigh of awoman utterly delighted to be alone.By the time I arrived, the Lecturehall was heaving with smart peopleall looking about expectantly. I, on theother hand, was slightly travel-wornand hobbled by my pretty, but bynow excruciatingly painful andhated, shoes – all this rather colludedin my downfall. Clutching a glass ofwine, I attempted to find a seat butprogress was slow and a bit tricky.Just as I had spotted an emptychair and was heading towards it,disaster struck. Catching my highheel in the floor grating and thentripping forward over a large andelegant handbag, I pitched directlyinto the lap of a very stylish andwell-known Celebrity Psychologist(whom I have always rather admired).Landing prostrate at her feet wasnot the best of introductions and theonly thing I could think of to say?‘A Handbag!’ – in the manner ofa slightly drunk and dishevelledLady Bracknell. It was not my finestHour. I comfort myself with theknowledge that at least she is wellused to Loons!Emma Rose – Art Exhibitions 29th March-30th April @ The Fat Fowl, Bradford On Avon 18-19th May @ Widcombe Art Trail at The Paragon School 7th-16th June @ Wheat Paddock Barn Gallery, FreshfordThe ParagraphPage 5

Society CafeOpening a coffeeshop in Bath’s historicKingsmead Square wasn’tpart of the original planfor Adrian and JaneCampbell-Howard.Fresh from Marrakech, where they had beenmanaging the glamorouscelebrity-magnet Riad ElFenn boutique hotel forowner Vanessa Branson, the couple were originallylooking to open their ownsmall hotel in Bath.‘We kept meetingproperty agents,’ they say,‘and they would inevitablysuggest meeting inplaces like Starbucks orCaffé Nero, which gotus thinking that whatBath really needed a coolcoffee house’With two young childrenat The Paragon, Adrianand Jane also wanted toopen a café where kidswould feel comfortable. The children’s area inthe basement invitesyoungsters to draw graffition a chalkboard and sit atlow, purpose-built tablesand chairs while mumand dad relax nearbywith a coffee.Inside, the space is lightand airy and takes fulladvantage of the highceilings and pleasingcorner position.Although high qualityfood is served, coffeeis the main fuel for thebusiness: experiencedbaristas pull the houseblend or the E6 blend, both from CliftonCoffee. Guest coffeesfrom up-and-comingnew roasteries – suchas Roundhill fromRadstock, near Bath –are also on offer, madewith an Aeropress. And it’s not justthe coffee that’s takenseriously. Loose-leafteas come from Bristol’sLahloo, and bespoke hotchocolate is made fromchunks of single estateVenezuelan chocolatesupplied by WillieHarcourt-Cooze.Society Café is a verywelcome new additionto Bath’s ever-improvingindependent coffee scene.Coffee junkies have neverhad it so good.THURSDAY CAFE RETURNSAFTER EASTER:Doughnuts – 50pCoffee – £1Squash – free!HELPERS NEEDED!The Paragraph Page 11
