Flags!Did you ever wonder who puts <strong>the</strong>American flags along Pacific Coast Highwayin <strong>the</strong> village on special “flag days”?You guessed it: Dedicated volunteers for<strong>the</strong> <strong>Corona</strong> <strong>del</strong> <strong>Mar</strong> <strong>Chamber</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Commerce</strong>.There are seven days a year when early in <strong>the</strong> morning, 6o’clock, volunteers ga<strong>the</strong>r to put up <strong>the</strong> flags, <strong>the</strong>n re-convene in<strong>the</strong> evening to take <strong>the</strong>m down—Presidents Day, Memorial Day,Flag Day, Fourth <strong>of</strong> July, Labor Day, September 11, and VeteransDay. We can get <strong>the</strong>m up or down in less than 45 minutes wi<strong>the</strong>nough volunteers. Currently <strong>the</strong> flag committee chairperson isJacqueline Wittmeyer <strong>of</strong> Coldwell Banker, whose vision is 100flags and 100 people...a parade! You are welcome to join us on anygiven flag day. We have a lot <strong>of</strong> fun, and in <strong>the</strong> morning ga<strong>the</strong>r atPain du Monde who gives us c<strong>of</strong>fee for our patriotism and community spirit. Our next flag holiday is Presidents Day on Monday, February 18...join us!<strong>Chamber</strong> Member Spotlight:COAST BARBER SHOPEDDIE “FAST EDDIE” BAÑUELOSThe <strong>Corona</strong> <strong>del</strong> <strong>Mar</strong><strong>Chamber</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Commerce</strong> wouldlike to sincerely congratulateEddie “Fast Eddie” Bañuelos atCoast Barber Shop on celebratinghis 40th anniversary! InterviewingEddie was such a funsurprise with so many stories <strong>of</strong><strong>Corona</strong> <strong>del</strong> <strong>Mar</strong> history.Eddie served as a U.S. militarysergeant back in 1958 andupon his return home, workedas an onsite barber for FordAerospace in Newport Beach.After <strong>the</strong> Vietnam War, Fordlaid <strong>of</strong>f many engineers livingin <strong>the</strong> area so Eddie decided togo into business for himself in<strong>Corona</strong> <strong>del</strong> <strong>Mar</strong> and quicklybuilt his clientele on referralsand friends.Coast Barber Shop hasbeen in its current location at333 <strong>Mar</strong>igold Avenue sinceJuly 1967, and has enjoyedmany generations <strong>of</strong> families,friends, and dignitaries. Eddie’sclientele includes NewportBeach policemen, congressmen,celebrities, and militaryfolks who line up at <strong>the</strong> busyshop for a cut and a visit.Working alongside Eddieis his nephew Angel Garcia,and fellow serviceman JimSaldivar. Ironically, it wasn’tuntil Jim was carrying an oldmilitary picture that Eddie andJim realized <strong>the</strong>y were bothin <strong>the</strong> picture and stationedtoge<strong>the</strong>r at Fort Ord at <strong>the</strong>same time. Some things are justmeant to be.Eddie and his wife <strong>of</strong> 50years raised <strong>the</strong>ir three childrenin Orange. When asked howlong he plans on working, Eddie’sreply is “ano<strong>the</strong>r 40 years.”So, if you haven’t yet metEddie, stop on by where <strong>the</strong>twirling red, white, and bluepole symbolizes a true “Barber”shop, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> few remainingpr<strong>of</strong>essions <strong>of</strong> its time.Eddie also finds time toplay in several bands andperforms Latin and Swingentertainment for various communityorganizations.7 www.cdmchamber.com
