Welcome to the world
of Michelin Competition!
At Michelin, motorsport is a way of life that continuously allows us
prove that the combination of innovation, reliability and performance
works towards a single goal: enabling our partners and customers to
benefit from the latest technological breakthroughs
made in the worlds of circuit racing, rallying, on
asphalt, snow, ice and gravel. Our tyres have
long enjoyed an enviable record of individual
event wins and titles. Michelin is forever
taking up new challenges and revels
in direct competition which
is the surest motivation to
keep moving forward.
Through our innovations
and the service we provide,
our aim is to remain
the most consistent and
most reactive tyre manufacturer.
“Bonne route” and thank you
for choosing Michelin.
January 2005

Technical information
• Tyre markings explained: Example: 19/62-17 X TL N 20
19 = Tread band width (cm)
62 = Exterior diameter of the tyre (cm)
17 = Rim diameter (inches)
X = Radial tyre
TL = Tubeless tyre
N = Tread type
20 = Compound
• Rims: For optimal performance, respect recommended rim widths.
• Re-cutting: Re-cutting may be required to adapt the pattern to the conditions
of the moment. Clearance capacity can be considerably enhanced thanks
to this technique.
• Asymmetric tyres: It is important to ensure that asymmetric tyres are correctly
positioned on the right-or left-hand side of the vehicle.
• Pressures: Tyre pressures are always a function of three parameters:
vehicle, tyre type and stage conditions. Pressure needs to be optimised for
each individual case. Do not hesitate to consult us.
Important: Our competition tyres are not homologated for road
use. They must be used only on tracks or for racing according to
our recommandations.
For rally technical information : tel. +33 (0)4 73 41 75 01
For track technical information : tel. +33 (0)4 73 30 43 75
In order to ensure the highest level of performance possible at
all times, Michelin is constantly developing its range and
reserves the right to introduce modifications in the course of
the season.

Asphalt rally
The constraints imposed on tyres by asphalt push them to their absolute
limit. It is via the contact patches - which are barely bigger than the palm
of an outstretched hand - that all the power is transmitted to the ground.
The contact patches also have to cope with the considerable lateral forces
generated under hard cornering. In damp conditions, tyres are designed to
optimise contact with the road for high performance traction and grip. Wet
weather tyres are capable of clearing up to 20 litres of water per second.
Gravel rally
The term ’gravel’ covers all surfaces that are not either asphalt or snow.
Different types of terrain make specific demands on tyres which, in addition
to resisting wear and outside aggression, are designed to cut through the
loose top surface in search of firmer ground underneath.
Mud, sand: compound 7
Soft gravel: compounds 4 and 8
Hard surfaces and buried stones: compounds 5 and 9
Snow and ice rally
By definition, grip is at a premium on the snow and ice encountered in winter
rallies! The cocktail of dry portions, sheet ice and/or or snow frequently
makes tyre choice complex. Performance is also a function of the quality of
the bond between the rubber blocks and the metal studs. At 120 kph, each
stud strikes the ground 17 times per second!
245/80-16 Sand (G3) 806 192 2530 6,5 à 7,5
Characteristics
Rock (ex G1) for use on hard broken ground, can be used in sand by lowe-
ring tyre pressure, must be re-inflated after sand use.
G 2 multi purpose, narrower, good on rocky ground and sand.
Sand (ex G 3) for sand use only.
Advice:
• For high speed running on hard ground: minimum pressure 2,3 bars
• For the sand: standard running 1,4 bars
• In case of being blocked in sand: 0,8 bar but immediately re-inflated.

BFGoodrich rally Raid
In rally-raids, tyres play a particularly capital role because of the variety and
hostility of the different terrains encountered. Tyres must effectively...
- support the load of the car; a single tyre may be called upon to withstand
a load of more than 3 tonnes. When landing after a jump, for example!
- steer to ensure directional changes.
- grip, often on very slippery surfaces.
- be durable in order to cover competitive sections in excess of 1,000 km.
- absorb shocks; tyres are the first element of the vehicle’s suspension system.
Whatever the discipline, Michelin never ceases to demonstrate the performance
of its motorsport products thanks to the reactivity of its technical
teams, the strength of its partnerships and the high standard of its research
and development department. This energy applies to a long list of events
for which the development of the most competitive product is a multifaceted
challenge to which Michelin rises without let up.
XAS: The first production tyre to feature an asymmetrical pattern. Its outstanding
performance naturally led to it being used in competition under the
appellation “FF”.
