Dermacentor genus<br />

Dermacentor genus, female dorsal at upper left, male dorsal at upper right, male ventral at lower right (all features apply<br />

to both sexes except where stated).<br />

Dermacentor nitens is shown as a male,ventral, at lower left (this species does not occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>).<br />

De. nitens<br />

1 Size <strong>of</strong> unfed ticks is medium (4 to 5mm) for Dermacentor;<br />

size is small (3mm) for De. nitens, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g mouthparts.<br />

Lateral suture is absent. Integument texture has striations.<br />

2 Mouthparts are anterior.<br />

3 Palp articles 2 are broad <strong>in</strong> Dermacentor; <strong>in</strong> De. nitens palp<br />

articles are all small.<br />

4 Basis capituli has straight lateral marg<strong>in</strong>s and dorsally it is<br />

rectangular.<br />

5 Legs have no pale r<strong>in</strong>gs. Legs are slender. Pulvilli are always<br />

present.<br />

6 Scutum is present <strong>in</strong> the female (a conscutum is present <strong>in</strong> the<br />

male). Enamel (= ornamentation) is present on scutum and<br />

conscutum <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> Dermacentor, form<strong>in</strong>g a white pat<br />

tern.Enamel is absent from De. nitens.<br />

7 Eyes are present and usually flat to slightly convex <strong>in</strong><br />

Dermacentor. Eyes are <strong>in</strong>dist<strong>in</strong>ct <strong>in</strong> De. nitens.<br />

8 Festoons are present <strong>in</strong> males.<br />

9 Spiracular plates are large and posterior to legs 4. Spiracle<br />

goblets are scattered over the spiracle plates <strong>in</strong><br />

Dermacentor; <strong>in</strong> De. nitens they form a r<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

10 Ventral plates are absent from males.<br />

11 Anal groove is posterior to the anus <strong>in</strong> Dermacentor. In<br />

De. nitens the anal groove is <strong>in</strong>dist<strong>in</strong>ct.<br />

12 Coxae 4 are very large.<br />

13 Coxae 1 have large and equal paired spurs.
