Mortarboard tassels forIndigenous Australian graduatesThe University of South Australia is proud ofits commitment to Australian reconciliation. To enable Indigenous Australians to havetheir ancestry recognised, Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander graduates have theoption of wearing a mortarboard witha tassel incorporating the colours of therespective flags (red, black and gold forAboriginal graduates and blue, green andwhite for Torres Strait Islander graduates).History of academic dressAcademic dress has a long history, almostas long as that of universities themselves. Itbegan with the foundation of the Europeanuniversities in the 12th and 13th centuries.Until that time, education was carried outwithin the monasteries, such as one atOxford where divinity, philosophy and artswere studied as early as the 8th century. It was not until the 12th century thatgroups of teachers and students gatheredtogether for classes outside monasterywalls in a move that was recognisable asthe beginnings of universities. Two of theoutstanding schools at that time were inBologna and Paris. During the 13th centurythe Roman legal word universitas becamea common name for study groups. Thethird great university of the Middle Ages,Oxford, emerged at that time. Much of thesymbolism of academic dress is bound upwith the history of those early universitieswhich have influenced the creation andmaintenance of a distinctive form of dress. In the earliest times, university statutesconcerning academic costume weresomewhat vague, and it was not until thelate 14th and early 15th centuries, as layfashions began to change, that universitiesbegan to adopt the policy of setting downparticular requirements for the shape andcut of academic dress.Over the centuries, gowns have evolvedin various forms from the original outergarment or robe commonly worn by thelaity and members of the clergy, to the manymodern versions for the various levels ofacademic awards. Hoods have developedfrom the head coverings worn by studentsin the early ages. They were especially usefulin inclement weather and in the draughtycloisters of monasteries. At Canterbury, in the 13th century, themonks’ hoods were lined with fur becauseof the cold. Windows in those days were notglazed. It would seem that no matter how younga university is, one of the first priorities isto adopt a style of academic dress which isdistinctive. The University of South Australia isno exception. In 1991, the Universityacknowledged the academic dress of itspredecessor institutions and then in February1992, the University’s academic dress wasdetermined by the Council and the firstgraduation ceremonies wearing the newUniversity of South Australia academic dressoccurred during April 1992. It is interestingto note that the hood chosen is of OxfordBurgon style while the gown is of theCambridge style, an interesting link withtwo of the greatest European universitiesof the Middle Ages.

Ceremony TraditionAcademic Procession and stagepartyThe traditional custom in which dignitariesof the university enter the graduation hallis known as the academic procession. TheUniversity of South Australia’s academicprocession is led by academic staff followedby higher degree graduates, members of theUniversity Council, and senior management ofthe University, including the Vice Chancellor. The Chancellor is the last to enter.Academics sit at the rear of the stage, withhigher degree graduates and Council membersin the second to front row. The front row isreserved for staff reading graduand names, the academic registrar, senior managers, theVice Chancellor, guest speaker, honorary awardrecipients, special guests, and the Chancellor. In some circumstances the Chancellor may berepresented by the Deputy Chancellor or ProChancellor.Academic DressAcademic dress usually reflects the highestacademic qualification of the wearer. Specialceremonial gowns are also worn and theserepresent the wearer’s position and title. TheVice Chancellor can be recognised by thedistinctive blue Fairford brocade gown adornedwith silver oakleaf lace, and blue bonnet withsilver tassel. The Chancellor’s gown is also blueFairford brocade but incorporates gold oakleaflace and notably this is worn with a blackbonnet finished with a gold tassel. If you lookcarefully you will see that this gown also has acombination of seven chevrons on each sleeveinstead of the three straight chevrons locatedon the Vice Chancellor’s gown.Senior management wear a black gownwith blue facing on the front and rear collar, and a black bonnet with silver tassel. Theacademic registrar wears a similar gownhowever you will note that the blue facingis not as wide and the collar is black, and ablack mortar board with blue tassel is worn.Readers wear the gown reflecting theirhighest award, as do Professors receivingthe honorary title of Emeritus Professor, andthose being awarded with Honorary Fellowtitles. Recipients of honorary Doctor of theUniversity awards wear the prestigiousblue University of South Australia honorarydoctorate gown trimmed with yellow andred facing, and a red, yellow, and blue hood.A black bonnet with black tassel is theaccompanying headwear.Council members are distinguished withblack silk-like gowns with red, blue, andyellow facing, and a black bonnet and goldtassel. Candidates graduating with a PhDwear a black Oxford-style gown with redfacing, and those receiving professionaldoctorates wear the same style gown butwith coloured facing representing theirdiscipline.End of CeremonyThe academic recession signals the end ofthe graduation ceremony and is led by theChancellor, followed by the stage party inthe reverse order to which it entered.
