Congratulations to Oscar Passley, music
faculty (A, L & L Division), Eastfield’s
“Focus on Excellence” Award recipient
from the District Visions of Excellence
(VOE) program. VOE is a professional
development opportunity for all new
faculty and includes visiting scholars
District-wide. Passley was acknowledged
for his valuable contributions to the
college which included his recruitment
activities and coordinating the college’s
jazz ensemble. Eastfield’s Media
Department created a wonderful video
illustrating Oscar “in action” in the classroom
and other performances. The video
also included testimony from a current
student in the jazz band and one of his
mentors, Harrell Lucky.
Yolanda Roncal, English for Speakers of
Other Languages Advisor at Eastfield,
has been named to the Texas A&M
University- Commerce Hispanic- Serving
Institution Advisory Board. The advisory
board will serve in developing an action
plan to help the college reach their
strategic goal to become a Hispanic
Serving Institution in the next three years.
Shirley Kazcka, Associate Dean of
Organization and Staff Development at
Eastfield, has received certification with
the North American Council for Staff,
Program and Organizational
Development. Her certificate was
presented at the Annual International
Conference in St. Paul, Minnesota on
Nov. 6. This year-long certificate program
includes intensive face-to-face training
and development opportunities; individual
goal-setting, planning, and reflection;
and the opportunity to work with an
experienced mentor on the development
of five core competencies required of
professionals working in the staff,
program, and organizational development
field. In order to become certified,
participants will document competencies
in these five areas: analyze the
institutional, departmental, and/ or
individual development needs; design a
program or training event to meet an
identified need; develop the program or
training event to provide learner success;
implement the program or training event
and evaluate the level of success of the
program or training event.
Eastfield’s Gateway to College students
were invited to dine at Aboca’s restaurant
in Richardson by owner Artur Pira. Capt.
Michael Horak of the Eastfield Police
Department told Pira about the GTC
students. Pira is so proud that these
students are taking the next step to a
better future that he invited them to have
pizza and soft drinks on the house three
times. At the Nov. dinner, Capt. Horak
and GTC Director Luis Cowley presented
Pira a certificate of appreciation and
other Eastfield mementoes to honor his
contribution. The certificate is proudly
displayed at the restaurant. Pira’s
contribution to GTC was recognized by
Dallas Morning News Special Contributor
Chris Coats in his Nov. 22 “Giving
Thanks” article. The GTC program is
for at-risk students from Garland and
Mesquite school districts.
Eastfield hosted the Advanced
Techniques in Joint Child Abuse
Eleven women from Singapore, including
two child care licensing officers and nine
staff from a non-profit foundation which
operates child care centers across
Singapore toured the Eastfield Center
for Child and Family Studies on Dec. 2.
The women, who were in Dallas to
attend a conference, spent two hours
touring the facility. Dr. Karen Holder,
Director of the Eastfield Children’s
Laboratory School, described the school’s
operation, staffing, staff qualifications
and curriculum and provided copies of
forms used in center operations. Nancy
for Child Development/ Teacher Prep.,
explained the Child Development
Department Instructional Program’s
philosophy, degrees and certificates
offered, student learning outcomes and
instructional methods. The visitors were
very interested in how the government
regulated both the lab school and the
college instruction provided. Tiffany Lim
Eastfield Talent
Search Dept.
hosted a
Dec. 4 for
women. Using materials like thread,
yarn and felt in practices like weaving,
knitting and embroidery, these visually
compelling 2- and 3-D works aim to
challenge preconceptions about the
subject and forms of men’s art.
