The <strong>Tickle</strong> NewsletterSeptember–October 2013Governor General PresentsCaring Canadian Awards atBeachy Cove Elementary SchoolHis Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,Governor General of Canada, met with staff andstudents from Beachy Cove Elementary School onJune 13th. He presented the Governor General’sCanadian Caring Award to six deserving recipients.Including three recipients from our community,nominated by grade six students from Beachy CoveElementary School, for their contributions to thewell-being of their community. Their Honours theHonourable Frank F. Fagan, Lieutenant Governorof Newfoundland and Labrador, and Mrs.Patricia Fagan, were also in attendance, as wellas family members, school staff and students.Created in 1995, the Governor General’s CaringCanadian Award recognizes living Canadians andpermanent residents who have made significant,sustained, unpaid contributions to their community, inCanada or abroad. Often working behind the scenes,these individuals volunteer their time and efforts tohelp their fellow citizens. The award also brings tolight the example set by volunteers, whose compassionand engagement are a part of our Canadian character.Todd ChurchillTodd Churchill iscommitted to supportingthe organizations that helphis son Carter, who hascerebral palsy and is hearingimpaired.He raised fundsby renting out the full-size hockey rink in his backyard,featuring side boards, nets and lights, which he built himself.The initiative, dubbed Reason for the Rink, became a hugesuccess, raising both awareness and funding for the MazolShriners, Easter Seals of Newfoundland and Labrador,and the Rainbow Raiders therapeutic riding program.Julianne and Rachel MossSince 2009, Julianne and Rachel Moss have raised funds tosupport the Janeway Children’s Health & RehabilitationCentre. When Rachelbroke her leg at age four,the two sisters determinedthey would give back tothe institution that hadhelped her recover. Startingwith a goal of raising $100by selling homemade bracelets, they have since raised$30,000. Their creations now include magnets, snowmanpins, Christmas ornaments, hair clips and much more.


Local Players win National Medals!Jordan Pitcher was a member ofthe Newfoundland and LabradorU14 Boys All-Star Team thatwon silver is Charlottetown, PEI.(pictured right).
