I. Before You Apply
Studying abroad is an eye‐opening experience that can pay enormous dividends in your life and your future business
career. You’ll get first‐hand experience as a participant in the global economy and learn about the cultural differences
that exist between the U.S. and other countries.
The Goizueta Business School has exchange programs in Australia, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America.
Attending a Goizueta exchange program allows you the flexibility of registering at the partner school for your semester
abroad while maintaining full‐time status at Goizueta. BBAs on exchange programs pay the same tuition, and have the
same Emory financial aid opportunities, as they do during full‐time study at Goizueta. Information outlining expenses in
addition to Emory tuition is included on each program profile sheet.
All BBAs on study abroad receive complete transcripts recording grades at their abroad schools. Credit for the semester
abroad is recorded as “Satisfactory” credit on the Emory transcript for all courses where students earn a B‐ equivalent or
better. Earning a lower grade may result in an “Unsatisfactory” mark—no credit—on your Emory transcript.
PRE‐REQS FOR STUDY ABROAD
To apply for study abroad, you must be able to answer “Yes” to the following criteria:
If you do not meet the criteria below, you may petition for a waiver of select requirements by addressing the reasons for your request
for a waiver in a separate essay submitted with your application, and by submitting a faculty recommendation letter.
1) I am currently enrolled in Emory University's Goizueta Business School;
Applications from students not currently enrolled in the Goizueta Business School and their program placement requests will be
considered after applications of currently enrolled BBA students.
2) I have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and at least a 3.0 GPA the semester before study abroad;
3) I am in good academic standing;
4) I will disclose any Honor Council or Student Conduct charges, violations, or outstanding cases;
5) I have not been suspended, expelled, or put on disciplinary probation at any college including Emory;
6) I have met the minimum language requirements for my programs of choice; and
To ensure academic success at the partner school, students must demonstrate college coursework at the 212 level or higher, or
native fluency.
7) I have completed at least 3 semesters (or 48 hours) of college‐level work as well as 16 hours minimum after
enrolling as a BBA student (although some of these 16 hours may be in College classes) and at least 3 core classes.
REQUIRED Pre‐Application Tasks
Research the various Goizueta Business School partner programs. A complete listing of current program profiles is
included at the end of this guide and on the International Programs website:
https://community.bus.emory.edu/program/OIP/Planning/default.aspx.
The BBA Study Abroad & Exchange Programs website also offers partner school fact sheets and a list of classes approved
in the past. Visit partner school websites directly to get even more information.
Attend a “Goizueta Study Abroad Information Session.” Sessions are held at the beginning of each semester. You must
attend an info session prior to consulting with the BBA Study Abroad Advisor. To learn dates, check your BBA class
conference (i.e., BBA12), or look on the BBA TV on the third floor of Goizueta Business School.
Meet with your academic advisor to map out how a semester abroad fits into your overall academic plan. Your advisor
will post instructions to his or her FirstClass conference (Advisor‐ LastName) about how to make an appointment. Be sure
to begin this process early to accommodate your advisor’s schedule.
Complete the Study Abroad Interest Assessment online. This tool provides BBA International Programs insight into your
personal preferences, as well as an overall profile of Goizueta students interested in study abroad. You can find it here:
http://emory.qualtrics.com/SE?SID=SV_2abbrLYSSXWZnX6&SVID=Prod
 Understand course approval regulations.
Type of Course Specifics
1. Core Courses Core courses may be approved for credit abroad, pending faculty
review. Barring exceptional circumstances, students may fulfill only
one core requirement abroad. BUS 410 and accounting core classes
may not be taken abroad.
2. Area Depth Electives All BBAs are required to complete at least 5 business electives, 4 of
which must be taken physically at Goizueta. Due to this, students
may earn credit for no more than one elective per Area Depth,
pending faculty review. Most accounting classes may not be taken
abroad.
3. General Education Requirements, 2 nd major classes, and the These may be approved on a case‐by‐case basis, pending review.
International Requirement
4. General credit (courses for which you intend only to earn
credits toward the total required for graduation, or which are
disqualified by one of the reasons above but remain of interest
to you)
Before You Go
Abroad
Such courses require no prior approval. If you take two classes that
count toward the same area depth, the second class would fall into
this category.
Review cost‐of‐living guidelines for schools on your list using the program profile sheets. Costs – housing, living, books,
fees, transport, etc. – vary from school to school, as do currency exchange rates. In recent years the dollar declined
significantly against the Euro and the pound; recently, the dollar has improved although it is still comparatively weak. Talk
this over with anyone who will be helping you to pay, especially your parents!
Determine the language requirements, if any, at your programs of choice. Eight of our 30+ programs require proficiency
at the college coursework level of 212 or higher, or native fluency, in Spanish, Italian, French, or German.
Consider how the dates of attendance at your desired programs will fit into your other academic, personal, and
professional goals. Program dates can vary widely from Goizueta’s own calendar. Rough estimates of the start and end
dates of each program can be found on the program profile sheet for each partner school.
Learn what kind of housing accommodations are available. A limited number of partner schools reserve university‐
affiliated housing for study abroad students. In these cases, pay careful attention to deadlines for securing such housing,
as communicated by the host school. Some schools provide plenty of help for students to secure housing, although it may
not be owned or operated by the partner school.
In many countries, however, colleges do not offer housing services. In these cases, you will find a place to live on your
own initiative. Some schools offer limited assistance; others trust students to secure their own arrangements. Many
families send students over a few days early to stay in a hotel/hostel and look at potential apartments. While this can
seem daunting, all of our students successfully complete this task every semester. A smaller number of families secure
housing before the students fly to their destinations, a process involving much time, trust (in the agent or web material
provided), and effort. Home stays are rare, but when available, the host school often has a coordinating role.
Recommended Pre‐Application Tasks
Consult with the BBA International Programs Office during the Study Abroad Advisor’s drop‐in hours. You can
discuss how to approach your overseas study based on your academic needs, and you will review the exchange
partner programs which best fit those needs. To learn dates and times, check your BBA class conference (i.e.,
BBA12), or look on the BBA TV on the third floor of Goizueta Business School.
Research your schools and destinations of choice using the resources available through the Goizueta Business
B. Submit a faculty recommendation letter.
The BBA Study Abroad Selection Committee values your recommender's candid appraisal of your ability, academic and
otherwise, to study abroad, including qualities of mind and character, dedication, responsibility, and readiness for the rigors of
study in a foreign country. Evidence of overcoming adversity, rising to challenges, and achieving beyond expectations are
helpful. Your recommender may wish to include how well he/she knows you and in what capacity, his/her assessment of the
relative strength of you as a student within the reference group of your peers, and how you would benefit from a chance to
NOTE: Demand for many exchange programs is very high. The number of students selected to participate in
programs through Goizueta is regulated by exchange agreements that are different for each school. Therefore, you
should be willing to attend your second or third choice program if you wish to study abroad in a specific semester.
NOTE: Late and/or incomplete applications may affect placement in the semester and program of your choice.
Before You Apply Submitting Your
o Find the shift key to capitalize proper nouns and first words of sentences!
o Use a dictionary to spell words correctly and completely.
Your persuasive proposal may take any format that conveys your passion and answers the
prompts provided above.
o We really read your proposal. Please honor yourself and the BBA Study Abroad Committee
Application
Wait for your answer…
The BBA Study Abroad Committee reviews applications within 2‐4 weeks after the due date, and may offer
students the opportunity to attend one of their preferred programs, based on the selection criteria below:
1. Your overall academic, extracurricular, and professional record.
2. Suitability of the program to complement your Goizueta BBA curriculum.
3. The quality of your persuasive proposal.
4. Your track record of following procedures outlined in this Handbook and your standing at Emory regarding
the Honor Code and Conduct Code.
While you wait, keep your grades up and your mind open in the event you are offered a placement in a second or
third choice program.
NOTE: Late applications as well as those for students not yet enrolled in the business school, will be considered
after all on‐time, regular applications have been reviewed and placement offers decided.
NOTE: Students who do not maintain a 3.0 GPA after application and before studying abroad may have their offer
3. Before You Go Abroad
Before You Apply Submitting Your
Application
If you receive an offer, make your choice!
Talk it over with your family and friends. Points to consider once more:
The greatest number of credits you may earn abroad is 16‐18, and fulfillment of requirements is limited to a core class
strictly equivalent to Goizueta’s own and one elective per area depth, as well as possible GER/second major classes.
Teaching and grading methods differ abroad. Class offerings and availability are not guaranteed.
Will you be able to graduate on time and achieve your academic goals?
Cost of living and the exchange rate differs markedly in the cities in which most of our partner schools are located.
Are your family and/or financial aid package prepared to accommodate your study abroad expenses?
Study abroad requires a sense of adventure, a spirit of independence, and an embrace of ambiguity.
Are you ready for this lifestyle?
Everything will take more time and effort, from finding housing to enrolling in classes, than here at Goizueta.
Do you and your family wish to invest your time this way?
Almost everyone who studies abroad says it is a life‐changing experience.
Are you prepared for an amazing adventure?
Consider answers to these sentences as you decide:
I am worried about…
I am excited about…
Before You Go
Pros of study abroad for me…
Cons of study abroad for me…
REQUIRED Pre‐Departure Tasks
Follow the “To do” list below, as well as the one (formal or informal) provided by your host institution.
Attend the required BBA Abroad Send‐Off Meeting.
This mandatory meeting is scheduled in November or December for Spring semester abroad or in March or April for Fall
semester abroad. The meeting will cover issues such as financial aid, communication with the Career Management Center,
and pre‐registration for the semester following your term abroad; date, location, and time will be e‐mailed to you.
Complete the application procedures required by the host school.
These range from online applications to paper materials that must be signed by the Study Abroad Advisor and then faxed.
Keep an eye on your email account for materials sent directly from the exchange coordinator at your host school, or
forwarded from the BBA Study Abroad Advisor.
Confirm the visa and foreign visitor procedures for the host country.
Most Emory students will need a visa. In this process, the Internet is a great ally. A simple search should bring up a list of
consular offices for the country in question, often with direct links to those offices' websites. There are also companies who
will conduct and expedite the visa application process for you. Although every country maintains distinct requirements, here
is a list of commonly required documents:
• A visa application from the host country’s embassy or consulate
• A valid, original passport, provided during an in‐person meeting at the consulate or mailed
• Proof of enrollment at Emory University; students may order such a document via the OPUS system
• A letter of acceptance from the partner university, mailed 1‐2 months after initial student nomination
• A letter of approval from Goizueta Business School, provided by BBA International Programs
• A notarized bank statement or letter confirming sufficient funds available and a promise to pay for living expenses
during the period of study abroad with these funds
• Proof of primary health insurance coverage, often available upon request from your insurance company
• Travel reservations to and from the country
 Confirm class dates.
Include any optional language courses in which you may participate as well as the final examination period for exchange
students. The acceptance letter you receive from the partner school should include these dates.
Make travel plans and buy tickets.
Arrange an interesting, academically challenging schedule of classes that will meet some requirements for
graduation.
Your course selections at partner universities must be approved by Goizueta faculty. BBA International Programs maintains a
list of pre‐approved classes, for which students in prior semesters sought and received approval at specific schools. This list
represents the area depth/ concentration interests and desired core classes of past students. When you wish to count a class
not already pre‐approved toward a specific requirement, you will need to obtain the syllabus materials from the partner
university and send them to the Study Abroad Course Approvals conference on FirstClass. Some of you may do this over the
summer, if you can get access to syllabus materials. Others must wait until arrival at the host school. Finally, you will
complete a Courses Taken Abroad form, indicating what courses you will take and what requirements you wish to fulfill.
(For more information about this, please see the next page of this guide.)
 Make housing plans.
If your partner school reserves university‐affiliated housing for study abroad students, pay careful attention to deadlines for
securing such housing, as communicated by the host school. Otherwise, make plans to travel over a few days early to stay in a
hotel/hostel and look at potential apartments. Alternatively, try secure housing before you fly to your destination.
 Talk with your family.
Discuss questions such as how to buy and pay for things abroad, a possible travel budget, emergency contact procedures,
regular contact methods, and safety and security while abroad. If interested, discuss culture shock, acclimatization,
homesickness, and your hopes for the experience. Make copies of important documents, such as passports, insurance cards,
credit card contact information, and the like. Find out from the companies how your primary and special study abroad
insurance coverage will operate.
Earning credit for classes taken abroad
1. Determine what BBA requirements—GERs, core classes, area depth classes, electives, and graduation
requirements—you need to fulfill. Consider classes that really interest you as well as specialties of your
host school, by area depth, language, or region/industry! Talk with your advisor, in person or via email.
Useful links may be found at: https://community.bus.emory.edu/program/OIP/Outgoing/default.aspx
Kinds of requirements you might try to fulfill include:
a. GERs/ second major classes
b. A core BBA class
c. An elective for an area depth
2. Check the course catalog, provided by your partner school.
Before You Go
Abroad
While You’re
Abroad
d. An elective for a second area depth
e. General/ flexible electives
3. Once you find some classes of interest, cross reference them with the Study Abroad Course Approval
spreadsheet (updated to include only classes as recently offered as four years ago). If the course you wish
to take is listed there, it is approved in the way noted on the sheet. All you need to do is enter it on your
Courses Taken Abroad form, enroll, and earn a B‐ or better to get credit.
Find the spreadsheet and link to the form: https://community.bus.emory.edu/program/OIP/Outgoing/default.aspx
4. If the exact course is not listed (not there at all, or number/name differ), you will need to...
a. Obtain a syllabus.
b. In English.
c. Then send that syllabus via email.
d. Where do you send this email? To the Study Abroad Course Approvals conference on FirstClass!
e. Note in the email what you hope it to count for (finance elective, Strategic Management,
Humanities GER, etc)
f. BBA International Programs will run it by the faculty for approval, and get you a verdict.
5. How many courses do you need to take at a minimum? It depends! You must take as many courses as
your partner school designates as a full load. You will be limited to earning credit at Goizueta for no more
than 16‐18 hours.
6. Once you have a slate of pre‐approved, newly approved, and you‐don't‐care‐if‐they're‐approved‐because‐
you‐are‐just‐taking‐them‐for‐interest‐not‐a‐requirement courses, list them all on the Courses Taken
Abroad form (available at https://community.bus.emory.edu/program/OIP/Outgoing/default.aspx).
a. Complete the form online before the add/drop/swap period ends at your partner institution.
b. BBA International Programs will check it out and let you know if everything is copacetic.
7. Ensure your transcript is sent from your abroad school directly to the Office of International Programs.
Learn the procedures at your abroad school and request your transcript long before your semester ends.
POTENTIAL PITFALLS,
AND HOW TO AVOID THEM!
 Immigration & Passports!
o Obtain a passport that is valid six months after you plan to end your study abroad semester.
o Obtain any required visas; follow posted guidelines exactly!
 Grades
o Your study abroad grades will be posted as S or U on your transcript, so your GPA will
neither decline—nor improve—after a semester abroad. Plan accordingly.
 Job and Internship Searches
o Contact the Career Center before you leave to learn how being abroad can affect your job
search; don’t wait until you’re abroad to find out! This is especially true for those interested
in the finance and accounting industries, with their structured interview processes.
 Finances & Housing
o Secure your financial aid and arrange housing for your return.
 Forms, Insurance, & Flights
o Complete all required abroad university forms on time.
o Arrange for mandatory abroad health insurance by the stated deadline.
o Arrange necessary travel to and from your abroad school; and notify your abroad school of
your arrival dates.
 Going “Incommunicado”
o Check FirstClass weekly before departing and while you are at your abroad school.
o Stay in regular contact with the Office of International Programs before you leave, and while
you are away. Send your cell phone numbers, as applicable.
 Embassies, Travel, & Your Safety
o To be safe, Emory requires that you register with the nearest U.S. consulate or Embassy;
also, inform your host school coordinator when you travel away from your host school.
While the BBA International Programs Office is a resource for issues concerning the items listed above, end‐line
accountability rests with you, the student.
5. Before You Return
Follow host school procedures, if any, to have your transcript sent to BBA International Programs. The address is
on the front of this guide.
Secure housing in Atlanta for your next semester.
Pre‐register for classes at Emory for your next semester.
Before You Apply Submitting Your
Application
Pre‐Registration
Pre‐registration for the next semester at Emory will begin while you are abroad. The BBA Study Abroad Advisor will
send you an email with the times for registration. (NOTE: All time are Eastern Standard. Watch out for the time
difference and effects of daylight savings!)
Before registering, you will have several weeks to receive advising from your Goizueta academic advisor. You can
learn about how to set up appointments by checking your Advisor‐LastName conference on FirstClass. If you
haven't heard from your advisor, contact him or her to set up a FirstClass chat or phone call.
BBA International Programs will post the class schedule for the upcoming semester here:
https://community.bus.emory.edu/program/OIP/Outgoing/default.aspx
 Prepare for reverse culture shock.
Often students expect to be able to pick up exactly where they left off. A problem arises when reality doesn't meet these
expectations. There are usually two elements that characterize a study abroad student's re‐entry:
1. An idealized view of home
2. The expectation of total familiarity (that nothing at home has changed while you have been away)
Reverse culture shock is usually described in four stages:
1. Disengagement
2. Initial euphoria
3. Irritability and hostility
4. Readjustment and adaptation
The best way of addressing it is simply to be aware of the source of your negative feelings. Be assured that in time, you will be
able to incorporate an appreciation for the positive aspects of each culture at home as well as abroad.
6. Now That You’re Back
Complete an experience report so others can learn from your time abroad! The BBA Study Abroad Advisor will
email you the form.
Talk up your experiences in class.
Represent your host school at study abroad info sessions.
Get involved with gIN, the Goizueta International Network.
Before You Apply Submitting Your
Application
Study abroad can make you…
More independent. You had to learn to fend for yourself in a foreign culture and adapt to a new way of doing things.
More aware of international issues. You have stepped outside the protective comfort of home to see that people in the world
have many concerns that Americans are not at all aware of. You may be better at determining the completeness and
objectivity of news reports, which are often steeped in cultural bias.
Sensitive to differences in people. Having immersed yourself in a different culture, you have seen that there are very different
ways of doing, thinking, feeling and communicating. This can help you in relationships with people at home, people whose
values and customs might be different from yours, but not any less valid or "normal" than yours.
Competent in another language. If your studies were in a language other than English, you have probably greatly increased
your proficiency in that language. People with foreign language skills are still rare in this country, so you have a skill that sets
you apart.
Before You Go
Abroad
What’s next?
Interact/Work with international students at Goizueta. Become involved with gIN, attend international activities on campus,
or simply become a friend to an international student. Join one of the many international student organizations on campus.
Continue language learning. Take additional language courses or join language clubs. Exchange tutoring in your native tongue
with someone who speaks your second language.
Learn more about your host country. Use your firsthand knowledge of another country as a basis for taking related courses
such as geography, history and international relations. Build on your knowledge by reading newspapers and books, viewing
films, and basing research projects and papers on your host culture. Use additional information gained in these ways to make
presentations about your experience more interesting.
Investigate international careers. Visit the Career Management Center or University Career Center to browse through the
resource materials. Consider foreign service, international development agencies, overseas teaching, travel agencies,
volunteer groups (Peace Corps), or businesses which need employees who are bilingual and/or multi‐cultural in perspective.
Look toward a career that will allow you to continue your international contacts and use the skills you have developed as a
study abroad student. These skills are increasingly valuable in the growing global marketplace, and potential employers look
favorably on applicants with international experience. They need bright, independent thinkers with good intercultural skills.
Volunteer to work in the community or on campus. Help organizations that support community service and development.
Look for groups working with immigrants, refugees, or the aged, that can use your skills of listening, patience, and empathy.
Keep in touch with your experience. Write your friends in your host country. Keep up‐to‐date by sending photos. Write a
letter to your host institution explaining what the experience meant to you. Subscribe to a host country newspaper or read
current issues in the library. Plan a return visit to your host country or invite friends to come to the US.
Integrate the best of the two cultures. Don't feel you must give up one at the expense of the other!
Frequently Asked Questions
PASSPORTS & VISAS
1) What if I don’t have a passport?
Get one immediately, as you cannot study abroad without one! Go to the Decatur Post Office to get a form, or go to
http://travel.state.gov/passport_services.html . To ensure rapid service for a new or renewed passport, consider two‐way
Express Mail service.
2) Will my current passport be sufficient?
Make sure your current passport will be valid for at least six months after you return from your overseas study.
3) Do I need a student visa for study abroad?
Yes, in most countries. Students are responsible for applying for their own visas. After you receive your acceptance letter
from your host university, contact the consulate closest to your permanent address listed on your passport. Consulates will
provide you full information on applying.
Apply early, as it can take up to 6 weeks to get your visa. Most embassies require letters of acceptance from the abroad
school before issuing a visa. Some require the Enrollment Verification form that all students may request via the OPUS
system.
Expect this process to be difficult. Visas are an immigration control technique. Consular officers can make it very difficult to
fulfill visa and legal requirements. Expect to make multiple visits or send something in after your initial visit. Do not be
surprised if your calls are not answered or returned. Take as many documents as possible. If it goes more smoothly, imagine
how sweet your surprise will be.
HOUSING
1) What will I do about housing at my abroad school?
Several, but not all, Goizueta partner schools offer housing. Housing is not guaranteed for students who submit their housing
applications late.
If housing is not offered by the school, it is up to you to find housing. This can present many challenges, including language
barriers, lack of knowledge about a city’s neighborhoods and transportation, and worries about costs.
2) What about housing here at Emory?
Once you have confirmed your participation on an approved study abroad program, notify HousingHelp@learnlink.emory.edu
that you wish to cancel any housing application or assignment you had for the upcoming semester. Failure to cancel early
enough may result in a charge of $200.
If you live off‐campus, make arrangements with your roommates and landlord/rental company regarding your plans. Be sure
to consider utility services and payments as well as lease stipulations.
Before returning to Atlanta, make plans about where you wish to live, and apply accordingly.
ACADEMICS
1) How will my coursework and grades transfer?
Students receive transfer credit for their studies at partner schools. This credit—between 16‐18 hours per semester—is
applied as Goizueta Business School hours. You should work out fulfillment of specific requirements with the study abroad
advisor before taking a course abroad.
Before You Go
Abroad
While You’re
Abroad
Before You Return Now That You’re
Back

Students must receive an equivalent grade of “B‐” or above for transfer credit to count towards their degree with a
(S)atisfactory mark. Any grade of “C+” or below will be posted on your transcript as (U)nsatisfactory, showing hours
attempted but not completed.
Your abroad transcript will be placed on file by the GBS Registrar’s Office; evidence of satisfactorily completed and attempted
hours will be recorded on your transcript. Graduate schools may request transcripts from all institutions where you took
courses, which would include your transcript from your abroad school.
2) How can I register for my return semester?
Pre‐registration for classes takes place online through the OPUS system. The OPUS web address is www.opus.emory.edu.
You can access this web site from anywhere in the world. Take note of the pre‐registration date and your system username
and password before you leave for the semester. To ensure that you register at the right time, check FirstClass regularly
(accessible through the Internet) for information on pre‐registration. Information may also be found at BBA International
Programs website: https://community.bus.emory.edu/program/OIP/Outgoing/default.aspx
You may schedule a pre‐registration advising appointment, via email or on the telephone, with your regular academic advisor.
3) What should I do if I’m registered with Emory’s Office of Disability Services?
We suggest you tell Emory’s Office of Disability Services of your plan to study abroad as soon as your place is confirmed. We
cannot guarantee that partner universities will accommodate individual students’ needs. Therefore, we urge students to also
talk with their advisors after they are accepted so they can help to find out what services are available.
MONEY MATTERS
1) Do I pay tuition to Emory when I’m abroad?
Yes. Goizueta Business School has exchange agreements with its partner schools, meaning outgoing exchange students pay
regular tuition to Emory University while incoming exchange students pay tuition to their own home universities.
2) Do I pay fees to Emory when I’m abroad?
No. You are not charged for Emory fees when you study abroad at a partner school. You are responsible for paying any
university or orientation fees, charged by your abroad school.
If you are on financial aid, it is your responsibility to contact your financial aid officer if you have questions and if you wish to
increase your aid to cover increased study abroad expenses.
3) What about health insurance?
Because you are enrolled full‐time at Emory, students who participate in approved study abroad programs are expected to
carry primary health insurance, as mandated by the Mandatory Health Insurance policy. You may file a waiver via the OPUS
online registration system, if you do not wish to pay for the insurance plan offered by Emory.
Goizueta Business School also requires study abroad participants to carry supplemental study abroad insurance, which covers
services special to the needs of internationally‐travelling students. Emory’s current provider of this supplemental insurance is
T. W. Lord & Associates (telephone: 770.427.2461).
4) Does my financial aid apply during my semester abroad?
Yes! For students who apply for Financial Aid, a package will be prepared according to the typical cost of attendance at Emory
University. Students’ budgets can be modified based on the expenses of their particular exchange program, upon request.
Therefore, students must work closely with Brenda Hill (bhill@emory.edu) in the Office of Financial Aid. Plan in advance:
deadlines are often one year or one semester before departure.
5) How much money should I bring and what will my living expenses be?
First, check this guide for anticipated expenses. Then, be sure to consider the conversion rate (check www.oanda.com).
Third, don’t forget about travel you may want to do! Finally, add 10‐15% to your estimate, just to be safe– almost everyone
tells us that they end up spending more than they anticipated!
We suggest bringing a bank card so you can withdraw money from your account at ATMs all over the world. Research fees
before leaving. Notify your credit card or bank card company before going abroad of your likely travel plans, especially if you
will go to emerging economies or under‐developed countries where credit card fraud is rampant. Because of problems
worldwide with identity theft and credit card theft, some companies may block card use when purchases are made in
“unusual” places.
