News<strong>Health</strong> MattersBaby scheme wins atop nursing awardA SCHEME to help mums in Blackpoolovercome perinatal depression has won aprestigious national award.The scheme, called Hello Baby, beat off stiffcompetition to win the Child and AdolescentServices category in the Nursing Times awards -the profession’s most highly regarded awardsceremony.‘Hello Baby!’ is an intensive five-week parent/infant interaction and attachment course aimed atmums with very young babies from birth to fourmonths old who, were identified antenatally withperinatal depression (PND), have developedPND after birth or have identified attachment andbonding difficulties.The focus of the course is to provide the motherwith individualised information about their infant’sbehaviour so they can appreciate their baby’sunique competencies and vulnerabilities, begin torecognise baby’s cues and thereby understandand respond to their baby in a way that meetshis/her developmental needs.The award was collected by <strong>Health</strong> Visitor,Deborah O’Dea, who said: “I am delighted thatHello Baby has been recognised in this way.From left: Liz Holt, Director of CommunityServices, and <strong>Health</strong> Visitor, Deborah O’Dea,pick up the award from Nursing Times Editor,Jenni Middleton.delighted that this hard work has received therecognition it deserves.“It is a real achievement to be shortlisted fromsuch a large number of entries and I amextremely proud of Deborah’s success and alsoof Julie Carter-Lindsay who was shortlisted in thesame category.’’“The programme has produced some excellentresults in Blackpool and is something that otherareas of the country are looking to implement aswell.’’The Trust saw two other projects shortlisted inthis category. The Trust was also highlycommended in the Team of the Year Award forits dedicated day surgery unit.Liz Holt, the Trust’s Director of CommunityServices, praised the team.She said: “Blackpool <strong>Health</strong> Visiting Service hasworked very hard over the past 18 months as oneof 26 first wave early implementer sites to deliverthe new vision for health visiting and I amOver 1,000 nursing professionals gathered tocelebrate and reward the nursing community forthe most prestigious event in the Nursingcommunity’s calendar. This year’s event saw arecord number of entries at 848 and the mostattendees in the history of the Nursing TimesAwards.ISSUE 23 03

News<strong>Health</strong> MattersHave your say on newplansPLANS have been unveiled toimprove and modernise olderpeople’s rehabilitationservices across the FyldeCoast.‘Improving Patient Care’ – TheNext Steps, is the joint vision ofclinical leaders across the FyldeCoast about how services couldbe delivered in the future toimprove patient care.A 12-week public consultationhas begun on proposals tomodernise and improve olderpeople’s rehabilitation in-patientservices and communityservices for the local population.Members of the public arebeing invited to a series ofpublic meetings where they canhear in detail about the plansand put forward their views.The proposals, which havebeen jointly produced by GPsand hospital clinicians acrossthe Fylde Coast, include: The development of anew clinical model forconsultant led care whichfocuses on greaterrehabilitation, dischargingpatients home sooner,and providing greatersupport to patients andtheir families once theyleave hospital Major investment inCommunity Services toenhance services tosupport people in thecommunity and in theirown homesThe proposals have beendeveloped by hospitalconsultants and GPs and arefully supported by the clinicalleaders across the Fylde Coastwho believe these proposals willbenefit patients by improvingquality of care through greaterconsultant input, specialistrehabilitation and better accessto diagnostics. Fundraisingand volunteering<strong>Health</strong> MattersChe Bar backs appealA BLACKPOOL town centrebar is the latest business toback Blue Skies HospitalsFund’s Going for GoldAppeal.Neil Hartley, who is one of thehead doormen at Che Bar onTalbot Square, has vowed tosupport the Appeal after beingencouraged by Blue SkiesAmbassador and fellowdoorman Darren Cadwell.Neil, who lives in Bispham,said: “Darren spoke to us aboutfundraising for Blue Skies and Ithought it was a fantastic idea.The Going for Gold Appeal willhelp the local hospital wholooked after my partner anddaughter when she was born.It’s a cause close to my heartand when I approachedmanagement they thought itwould be great to support a localcharity.The Going for GoldAppeal is a great project tosupport and we will be askingfor donations on the door.“People are so generouswhen they are on a nightout so we hope we canraise quite a bit. I’d like tothank all the customerswho have already donatedmoney for charity. I’malways blown away by howgenerous people are.”The Going for GoldAppeal was inspired by theLondon Olympics andstrives to provide a GoldStandard of care for the patientsof the Trust.Head of Fundraising, KathyAncell, said: “We are veryfortunate to receive donations inlieu of treatment received and inmemory of loved ones to benefitspecific areas across the Trust,and we are extremely gratefulfor this support.“However, there are manydepartments and wards thatdon’t readily attract charitablesupport, but still require ourNeil Hartley at the Che Bar.assistance. The aim of ourGoing for Gold Appeal is to raiseunrestricted income for BlueSkies Hospitals Fund, which willallow us to respond to whereverthe need is greatest at the time,to enhance the quality of careprovided across the FyldeCoast.Che Bar are loyal supportershaving already raised almost£5,000 to benefit the Children’sWards.
