opportunities to contribute to the field of design
research, a foundation for writing on design
culture and realize the opportunities to
contribute to the field of design studies. You
will also understand new markets and
production methods which can lead to new
work avenues.
MODULE DESCRIPTIONS
Design Practical 1 & 2
Each student will negotiate and define a
design brief appropriate to their specialist area
of design and their current level of expertise.
Interdisciplinary design briefs may be
undertaken to encourage collaborative
investigation followed by critical reflection and
evaluation of process and resolved outcome.
Students will be challenged to explore a range
of design methods and techniques to enhance
creative thinking and examine the implications
of risk taking in the context of professional
practice. The aim is for theory to be
implemented in design practice and to be
evident in design outcomes.
Sociology of Design
This module explores cultural theory in depth
Design Theory
Psychology of Design
as a tool for analyzing design culture. The
students will be able to critically evaluate the
implicit theoretical and philosophical
assumptions in design practice with a view to
setting out a means of understanding design
issues.
Creative Investigation
This module aims to enhance the creative
skills required to generate high quality design
solutions. It will improve the ability of students
to think in highly intuitive, non – verbal and
visual terms. The subject aims to increase the
students' knowledge in a high level of
investigative methods, while encouraging
advanced critical thinking and logical analysis
of current design issues.
Design Management
This module enhances the practical
management capacity of students. It exposes
the students to advanced skills required in the
formation of a new managerial class of
designers who should know how to combine
designers.
TERM 2 (12 WEEKS)
Psychology of Design
This module seeks to impart to students
psychological perspectives concerning people
and their bahaviour, in order to develop a high
level of skill in considering relevant human
factors in the design process. It will also guide
the students to interrogating their own thinking
styles and personality traits in their approach
to design articulation.
Design Practice Seminar
Advanced Concept Development
TERM 3 & 4 (24 WEEKS)
This module will channel students into high
level concept development that is oriented
towards an increasingly more defined
direction in the search for efficient and
functional design solutions. It aims to enhance
the range of advanced techniques that
designers have to communicate creative ideas
to clients, stakeholders and users.
Dissertation Proposal
This module introduces designers to a range of
academic and professional research methods
appropriate to design practitioners. The
writing of dissertation proposal creates a
blueprint for the students' project and
dissertation to be finanlised in the module
Design Project or Design Dissertation. The
proposal sets forth both the exact nature of
matter to be investigated and a detailed
account of the range of methods to be
employed.
Design Project
Under the Project streams this module is a
capstone project through which the students
demonstrate their mastery of the profession of
design, evidencing and extending all that they
have learned from their previous subjects in
Design Studio, Design Practice Seminar,
Design theory and Elective streams. Students
will cultivate advanced research skills and will
have the ability to develop high level, well
formulated, coherent arguments about a
substantial design project of their choice.
