Considered a waste product, synthetic gypsum is typically hauled awayand disposed of in landfills. However, because it is chemically equivalentto natural rock gypsum, synthetic gypsumcan be used as an alternative resourcewhen available. At the Lafarge Buchananplant, synthetic gypsum from neighboringpower plants is used to manufactureenvironmentally-friendly drywall. Thiscooperative effort results in cleaner air andreduced landfill waste.Recycling is also key to other areas of ourbusiness. At our partner paper plant inLynchburg, Virginia, Lafarge produces 100percent recycled content to be used as theface paper on all of our drywall. Additionally, all of our plants recycle scrap drywall that isgenerated from normal operations. At Lafarge, our goal is to be the numberone supplier of “green” building products. We lead the industry in the use of syntheticgypsum and serve virtually all of ourNorth American trading areas withrecycled product.
