<strong>Writing</strong>, <strong>Editing</strong>, <strong>and</strong><strong>Publishing</strong> <strong>Program</strong>Information for <strong>Writing</strong>, <strong>Editing</strong>, & <strong>Publishing</strong> (WEP) students—2011What are the entry requirements?A bachelor’s degree in any discipline, plus a 10‐page A4 portfolio (comprising samples of your writing in anygenre or in a combination of genres) to be assessed by the convenor. In exceptional circumstances, a substantialprofessional writing <strong>and</strong> publishing background (to be approved by the Executive Dean of Arts) may gain youentry if you do not have an undergraduate degree. If you think you have the relevant experience, contact theprogram convenor, Dr Roslyn Petelin (r.petelin@uq.edu.au) until December 2010. Dr Kim Wilkins(k.wilkins@uq.edu.au) will convene the program from January to June 2011 while Dr Petelin is on research leave.Is it possible to complete the Graduate Diploma in one year full time?Yes, if you commence in semester 1, 2011. There will be no mid‐year entry in 2011.Is it possible to do the programs part time?Yes.When are the courses offered?Core courses are offered from 5pm onwards. Check timetable on Si‐net.Can I study externally?Not at this stage.What is the maximum length of time that I can take to complete the course?Graduate Certificate: two years is desirable, but you may extend this.Graduate Diploma: four years is desirable, but you may extend this.What is the desirable rate of progression?It is desirable for part‐time students to study two courses per semester.Can I take only one course per semester?Yes, but check with the convenor for advice as to which course to take.Can I study in the summer semester?You can enrol in an elective in the Graduate Diploma, but you need to get written permission from theconvenor to do your choice of elective, which must be related to <strong>Writing</strong>, <strong>Editing</strong>, or <strong>Publishing</strong>.How <strong>and</strong> when can I apply?Please fill in an Application for Postgraduate Coursework. This form can be downloaded from the UQ site orhardcopies are available at any Student Centre or at the Faculty of Arts Office, Forgan Smith Building, Universityof Queensl<strong>and</strong>: (07) 3365 1333 or arts@uq.edu.au.What is the cutoff date for enrolment?It is desirable to enrol as early as possible, as the popularity of the programs may require a quota to beimposed, but enrolment submissions are accepted up to the beginning of the semester. It is essential that youattend the first week of class in all courses in which you are enrolled.Can I study the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in conjunction with other programs such as a Doctorof Philosophy or Master of Philosophy program?Yes, it is possible. You should request approval of this concurrent enrolment through the Executive Dean,Faculty of Arts <strong>and</strong> the Dean of Postgraduate Students, Graduate School.


<strong>Writing</strong>, <strong>Editing</strong>, <strong>and</strong><strong>Publishing</strong> <strong>Program</strong>What courses can I take as electives?Postgraduate courses <strong>and</strong> advanced‐level undergraduate courses (level 2 or above) that are relevant to yourstudies. You need to have written approval in advance from the program convenor.How much do the programs cost?You need to check this with administration. The Certificate program requires you to complete eight units, <strong>and</strong>the Diploma requires you to complete sixteen units. Most courses comprise two units. International students must be enrolled on a full‐timebasis <strong>and</strong> can be enrolled only in the Graduate Diploma or Master’s program.)Can I get credit towards the program for courses completed at other universities?Yes. You may apply to the Faculty of Arts Administration office (07 3365 1333 or arts@uq.edu.au) for credit.You will need to provide detailed course syllabi from your previous study to allow credit to be assessed.How many hours of study will I need to do each week outside of class hours?This depends on many factors related to your prior experience <strong>and</strong> capabilities.What technology will I need?The emphasis on digital resources makes fast broadb<strong>and</strong> access highly desirable.What are the job opportunities?<strong>Writing</strong> is at the heart of the academy <strong>and</strong> the ‘new’ economy.
