ICEE will distribute a 20<strong>07</strong> Indianacalendar, featuring all 12 state winners,courtesy of Printing Partners, Indianapolis.ANNUAL ECONOMIC CONCEPTCALENDAR CONTESTThis contest is held to stimulate interest inthe fundamentals of our economic systemand to encourage students to demonstratetheir understanding of economics in acreative, interesting way. The 20<strong>07</strong> contestrequired students to illustrate in poster formone of the following concepts: goods andservices, scarcity, human resources, saving andinvesting, opportunity cost, specialization, andcapital resources.The annual contest is open to studentsfrom second through eighth grade. ECONOMICS CHALLENGEGRADUATE CREDIT PROGRAMS3For the second time in five years, a teamof Carmel High School students has won theNational Economics Championship, whichtook place May 19-21 in New York City.Adam Aisen, Joey Buser, Harry Murzyn, andSteven Yee competed in the AdvancedPlacement category, defeating three otherteams that qualified for the finals. The Purdue,IUPUI, IU Kokomo, and ISU Centers reached217 education students with this three-creditcourse.Each summer the Indiana Council forEconomic Education (ICEE) sponsorsintensive, graduate-credit workshops for K-12teachers. These workshops cover a variety ofeconomic topics and take place at the ICEE‘sUniversity Centers. Teachers learn economicconcepts and also develop curriculum unitsto use with their students. Thanks to ourmany generous contributors, the ICEE offersfull or partial tuition scholarships to thoseattending the workshops, which over theyears have become the “flagship” program ofthe ICEE.Three hundred and twenty (320) Indianateachers received scholarships to attend oneof 20 intensive graduate-credit programs.Participants learned basic economic, business,and financial concepts and then developedcurriculum units to use with their students.IN-SERVICE PROGRAMSICEE reached 2,311 teachers andeducators via regional in-service programsand intensive summer workshops. Nominated by INNorthwest Center Director John Gibson, hernomination was supported by Dr. Bala G.Arshanapalli and Vice-Chancellor MarilynVasquez.Dr. Rominger highlights the efforts of theCenter whenever possible, and has beeninstrumental in the center becoming a fixtureon the IUN campus, working with the ICEEafter the retirement of former director, Dr.Gary Lynch, and through the continuedsupport of this award winning center underthe direction of John Gibson.This distinguished award honorscommunity leaders who have demonstratedoutstanding commitment to economiceducation in their community. The award isgiven in honor of Paul Samuelson, a native ofGary, Indiana, who founded theMassachusetts Institute of Technology'sGraduate Department of Economics. Dr.Samuelson was the first American to receivethe Nobel Prize in Economics.Mary Banta, Principal of St. Louis deMontfort Catholic School, Indianapolis, wasselected to receive the prestigious LawrenceSenesh Award for School Administrators for20<strong>06</strong>-<strong>07</strong>. This award is given each year inhonor of Larry Senesh, the first professor ofeconomic education in the United States.While at Purdue, Dr. Senesh developed theidea of the organic curriculum, which isbased on the idea that children can learnfundamental economics at an early agethrough meaningful experiences. His ideaswere formulated into a series of elementaryschool textbooks entitled Our WorkingWorld, published by Science ResearchAssociates.The ICEE gives this award each year to anoutstanding school administrator who hasexcelled in promoting economic education intheir school or school corporation. In hercapacity as principal and 3rd grade teacher,Mary models the importance of economiceducation to the staff of her school byimplementing economic education projects.This year’s recipient was nominated byProfessor Robert B. Harris, Director,Mohammad Kaviani, Associate Director, andTerri L.
