Roe LeerA message from your2013 GAVAR PresidentDear Fellow REALTORS®, Affiliates and Friends,Highlights of April were our Broker/Office Manager meeting at the AV Country Club, our videoof an Ethics situation, our special meeting with Assemblyman Steve Fox in the GAVARboardroom, revamping our Leadership Academy for this year and our Scholarship Task Forcemet. Early May had Legislative Day in Sacramento with 22 GAVAR participants! Our CARDirector meetings and our GAVAR Board of Directors also met in early May (more on theirresults below). And an emotional highlight was GAVAR staff member, Amanda Kraft, givingbirth to a healthy baby boy!Our Sacramento trip really showed the importance of our legislative influence in opposing bad bills andsupporting or even sponsoring good bills. Your mandatory $49 in your dues billing really helps, but voluntarycontributions put us “over the top” in our REALTOR Party funding. The “Capitol Reception” hosted over 50 staterepresentatives and was a smashing success. REALTORS have power when we work together! Please use the link below (you might have to Ctrl+click on it) and make your contribution today. The voluntary$49 is one level of support, a $148 contribution helps even more and can be spread over a few months. Even just$10 per GAVAR REALTOR will show a higher participation rate for our Association. These monies are usedjudiciously and effectively in Sacramento and Washington D.C. Please click now:https://realtorparty.realtoractioncenter.com/site/Donation2?3160.donation=form1&df_id=3160&JServSessionIdr004=vtxqsfwzc3.app338bThank you for your contribution! One bill we were encouraging our representatives to pass, in fact CAR sponsored it, is AB 42/SB 30 – Short SaleDebt Forgiveness at the State level to match that already passed nationally. It is presently on the “suspense” file.It would need to be voted on to take it off the suspense file, and that is far from a certainty right now. I would saythis is our biggest legislative item, so stand by if a “call to action” is issued.Another main focus of our CAR meetings was the issue of “pocket listings”, where brokers do not enter theirlistings into the MLS, often double-ending the transaction to their benefit but perhaps not to the Seller’s benefit. This is likely an ethics matter, sometimes an arbitration matter, and could be breaking the broker’s fiduciary dutyas required by the law. In any listing, the client’s best interests are to be promoted and protected. Any interest ofthe broker must only be considered once all client needs have been attended to. More on this at our weeklyNetworking Meeting and our May 29 th General Membership breakfast. The trust of our clients and the public inour profession depends upon our faithful service. A GAVAR Task Force will be formed to review and recommendon this crucial topic.“Commit to Engage” by attending the 6-module Leadership Academy! We’ve had so many sign-ups that we’reholding the event at the University of Phoenix. The first module is Thursday, May 16 th . If you want to be a betterleader at the Association level, or you have an interest in public office at some point, this is an opportunity youwon’t want to miss. Sign up now and listen, learn and lead!Speaking of leaders, the GAVAR Nominating Committee will be chaired by past-GAVAR President Jodie Shepherd-Troth. Once her committee meets, the sign-up sheets for the four (4) open 2014 Director spots, as well as theSecretary, Treasurer and President-Elect positions will be made available to you. If you’re qualified, motivated andenthusiastic – this just might be your chance to help guide the AOR into the future. Think it over!Your President,Roe Leer
