Application NoteUsing the DTR 3000 Discrete Track Recording Test System forData Recovery from Hard Disk DrivesThe latest Guzik DTR3000 system includes the Spinstand and Read‐Write Analyzerwith programmable drive servo decoder. The spinstand allows for mounting themedia platter taken out of a hard drive onto a high‐performance spindle, loading themagnetic read/write head, and reading the signal from the media. The crucial part of DTR3000 spinstand is a media centering mechanism, whichallows centering the tracks written on the media with respect to the axis of spindlerotation, which reduces the repeatable run‐out below 800nm within 30‐60 seconds.A cartridge holding the magnetic head is equipped with high‐bandwidth piezoactuator, which allows to close the servo loop and follow the tracks with residualrepeatable run‐out below +/‐7nm and typical non‐repeatable run‐out of 0.2‐0.6nm(one sigma). The Guzik drive servo decoder is programmable, and it supports both amplitude andphase chevron‐type servo burst configurations. The system was tested with mediataken out of the hard drives manufactured by major hard drive suppliers, as well asthe disks recorded using the new discrete track recording technology (DTR). If theservo information is severely damaged, Guzik spinstands provide positioning usingthe high‐accuracy optical encoder, which allows the user to build three‐dimensionalmaps of the magnetic transitions around the defective areas.Guzik Technical Enterprises | 2443 Wyandotte Street | Mountain View, CA 94043(650) 625-8000 www.guzik.com

The Guzik DTR3000 system integrates PRML channel decoder chips in order to readdata information from the drive, new channel chips can be integrated upon request. In addition to that, the DTR3000 system includes high‐speed WDM5000 seriesdigitizer, capable of capturing the data with the data rates up to 40GS/s (25pSsampling period). If the data is damaged and cannot be decoded using the standard PRML chipdesigned for the drive, you can obtain the raw analog samples and apply customdecoding algorithm in order to recover the degraded information.© 2009 by Guzik Technical Enterprises.
