DONORS CONTRIBUTED VOLUNTEERS INVESTED NONPROFITS RESPONDED LIVES WERE CHANGED I have always seen the impact that United Way has had on the community. In the community of Greater New Milford we share a vision of hope for better futures for all who live here. For a future where all children are prepared for that first day of school, with the skills needed as well as a new set of clothes so they can fit in with their peers. For a future where everyone has adequate shelter, a future where a roof over their head is not considered a luxury by some. A future where no one has to choose between their medication and food, where a pregnant woman is given the care needed for the health of her baby and herself. This vision is why I have worked with United Way for over 30 years. It is why I give. It is why I advocate. It is why I volunteer. And it is why I ask you to join us in helping our community. Health United Way Makes Health Care Accessible and Affordable In Our Communities. COMMUNITY REPORT CARD OFFERS IMPORTANT HEALTH INDICATORS FOR REGION United Way partnered with Danbury’s Health, Housing & Welfare Department, Danbury Hospital, and Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) to release the Community Report Card of Western Connecticut. The report takes a comprehensive look at the region’s health, educational achievements, and health and disease status. It establishes a baseline of the community’s health status by assessing several key quality-of-life factors in the Housatonic Valley region. Covering 10 towns from New Milford to Redding, the report focuses specifically on the areas of economic stability, education, health status, risk factors, health & lifestyle behaviors and diseases. It is anticipated that community organizations will identify areas where public intervention may improve the quality of services, cost effectiveness of services, and access to services for priority health needs. United Way helped fund the cost of the report with its key partners and other local funders. To read the complete report, go to www.uwwesternct.org. FOCUS ON SOUTHERN LITCHFIELD COUNTY UNITED WAY HELPED 250 CHILDREN START SCHOOL ON THE RIGHT FOOT Faced with a difficult economy and more need, the ability to provide school supplies for all the children on the waiting list was in doubt. But thanks to our donors, shoppers and volunteers, all 250 children received a complete set of back to school clothing, supplies and backpacks in August (a 35% increase from the year Youth Leadership Students before.) Two weeks before the event an anonymous donor offered a challenge to match 50 children, and over $20,000 was raised in the final days to meet the need. Children of all ages and backgrounds from New Milford and surrounding towns were thrilled with their new supplies. High school students from UWWC Youth Leadership program helped make sure distribution day was a success. Health issues are intertwined into all aspects of our lives. It affects whether children are able to learn in school, a parent’s ability to work and if a senior can remain independently in their home. UWWC invested over $1,200,000 in health care in 2008.
