June Renzulli retired as CEO
of United Way of Western
Connecticut in 2008. During her
14 year tenure her strategic vision
led the organization from a pure
fundraiser into a true community
impact leader. Today United Way
measures its success by how
many lives are changed and a
community’s capacity to respond
to need, in addition to the dollars
raised. In 2007, June worked
tirelessly with volunteers and
staff in merging three United
Ways to form United Way of
Western Connecticut. Her
dedication to the community
and her passion for helping
those less fortunate has left
an indelible mark.
We all wish her the best in her
future endeavors, and thank her
for her many years of leadership.

AT THIS MOMENT IN HISTORY UNITED WAY’S
MISSION HAS NEVER BEEN MORE CRITICAL
This has been a challenging year in our communities and nation. Free falling
financial markets and government bailouts captured the headlines, but the impact
of the economic fallout is counted one family at a time in our local communities.
Everyone knows someone affected by the rapid decline in our economy. Our friends
and neighbors have lost their jobs and in some cases their homes. But we believe
that United Way’s mission has never been more critical, and our call to Live United is
necessary if we are to continue to transform lives.
We need to be reminded that across our country when tragedy strikes, people
respond. We are a generous society, with many of our social services provided through
the charity of private donors and volunteers. It is what makes us as a nation stand
apart from others. And our communities are no different.
Let’s be clear, the problems we face are daunting. There has been an alarming
increase in demand for social services in our community – from food pantries to Rey Giallongo
shelter assistance to medical care for the uninsured. United Way’s 2-1-1 information
center is reporting increases of 20-40% in requests for services. There is also an increase in demand for credit
counseling, financial literacy education, job training, and foreclosure intervention.
We have also heard from our community partners about the profound impact of stress on families, and their
ability to provide stable nurturing homes for their children. They are reporting an increase in domestic violence,
an increase in substance abuse, an increase in homelessness, and an increase in mental health issues for
children. In addition, we have begun to see a new phenomenon – families among our lists of past donors who
are now in need of help themselves.
To put it simply, our families, the foundation of the communities we live in, are hurting.
As the crisis in our communities deepens, UWWC has begun to aggressively marshal our resources to respond
to dramatic increases in demand for the most basic of human needs – food, shelter and clothing. Drawing
communities together to support each other in times of crisis is the very concept on which the United Way
was founded. At this moment in history – perhaps more than at any other point in our lifetimes – we need
those who can to help those who can’t.
However, we should not lose track of the fundamental truth that providing basic needs support addresses
the symptom and not the cause of our community’s challenges. Because of this, we cannot abandon our
long tradition of “investing for solutions”, that is, supporting efforts to address the underlying causes of
homelessness, hunger, poverty, and health issues in our communities.
How we care for the neediest is what defines our character as a community, whether in providing basic support
or investing in solutions that prevent future problems. United Way launched a new call to action this year to
‘Live United’. We are asking everyone to Give, Advocate or Volunteer for something that matters to you. Whether
you donate food to a pantry, be a voice for those who cannot change things, or volunteer to spend time with an
elderly neighbor, you are helping to make Live United a reality.
Now is the time, and together we can make a difference. Answer the call to Live United, give aid to your
neighbors and help renew hope in our communities.
All Children Ready for School is a Priority for United Way
IMAGINATION LIBRARY PUTS BOOKS
INTO THE HANDS OF CHILDREN
United Way is committed to ensuring that children have
positive developmental opportunities so they start school
ready to succeed.
That’s why United Way of Western Connecticut partnered with
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 2008, providing Danbury
children under five a free book every month. In the first six
months over 500 children have been registered for the program.
“I know how important it is to
read to my son Thomas. He is
only 18 months, but I read to
him every day. They say you
should start early. But I am
reading the same story over
and over, because we only
have one book in our house.
This program is going to mean
so much to us. My son will
have his own library! Thank
you for making this program
possible. I can’t wait for our
first book.” - Joseph
Joseph came to United Way to
register for Imagination Library
after working the overnight shift
at a factory
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a unique opportunity to do something simple and powerful for
preschoolers. It allows for children, from the day they are born, to receive an age-appropriate book
every month until their fifth birthday. All Danbury children under age five are eligible to register.
Books are shipped directly to the children at no cost to the family.
Studies show that kids exposed to reading on a regular basis during preschool years have a
vocabulary of 10,000 words before age 5, compared to only 3,000 for children who haven’t had this
exposure. Preschool reading and parent involvement are among the most important steps toward
a child’s success in school. And when books are in the home, parents are four times more likely to
read to their children.
Children entering
kindergarten
with skills they
need to succeed
are more likely
to graduate from
high school
and become
productive
workers.
But almost half
of America’s
kindergarteners are
behind – those from
low-wage households
by two years. Most
will not catch up.
Helping the
community
address early
childhood issues in
a comprehensive and
coordinated manner
is an important role
for United Way of
Western Connecticut.
That’s why we
invested over
$1,200,000
in educational
programs in 2008.
AFFORDABLE
HOUSING REMAINS TOP
CONCERN IN STAMFORD
A lack of affordable housing topped
the list of needs in Stamford in the
Needs Assessment conducted in 2008.
In a city where wealth and poverty
exist side by side, United Way spent
several months gathering data and
perceptions from residents and those
who work in the city on what they
believe are the most critical needs.
The ability for people to live affordably in Stamford was the top priority. The need for job training,
financial literacy skills, financial assistance and affordable childcare were also among the top
five priorities. For a family of four to be considered self-sufficient in Stamford, they must earn over
$57,000 annually. Yet a third of households in Stamford earn less than $50,000, leaving them
struggling to meet the costs of housing, child care, food and healthcare. United Way will use data
like this from the Needs Assessment to help shape its future funding efforts.
“Thank you for what you do. I can’t
tell you how scared I was about losing
my home.” These are the words of a
grateful participant of the Foreclosure
Intervention Program operated by the
Housing Development Fund (HDF).
Last spring United Way responded to
the desperate situation in the housing
market and funded its first regional
effort with HDF. To date the program
has intervened on behalf of 40
families with sub-prime loans.
Because of United Way donors,
20 families have received loan
modifications with conventional
banks and are back on the road
to self sufficiency.
United Way’s Financial Stability Partnership , a
individuals and families get off their financial
tightrope, helping them to achieve basic
subsistence needs and plan for the future. Recently
launched in Stamford, the main emphasis will
be on creating or enhancing programs that will
increase income for families, help them establish
credit and build their savings, and gain and sustain
assets. Through this kind of initiative, we bring
United Way Makes Health Care Accessible
and Affordable In Our Communities.
COMMUNITY REPORT CARD OFFERS IMPORTANT
HEALTH INDICATORS FOR REGION
United Way partnered with Danbury’s Health, Housing & Welfare Department, Danbury Hospital,
and Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) to release the Community Report Card of
Western Connecticut. The report takes a comprehensive look at the region’s health, educational
achievements, and health and disease status. It establishes a baseline of the community’s
health status by assessing several key quality-of-life factors in the Housatonic Valley region.
Covering 10 towns from New Milford to Redding, the report focuses specifically on the areas
of economic stability, education, health status, risk factors, health & lifestyle behaviors and
diseases. It is anticipated that community organizations will identify areas where public
intervention may improve the quality of services, cost effectiveness of services, and access
to services for priority health needs. United Way helped fund the cost of the report with its key
partners and other local funders. To read the complete report, go to www.uwwesternct.org.
UNITED WAY
HELPED 250
CHILDREN START
SCHOOL ON THE
RIGHT FOOT
Faced with a difficult economy
and more need, the ability to
provide school supplies for all
the children on the waiting
list was in doubt. But thanks
to our donors, shoppers and
volunteers, all 250 children
received a complete set of back
to school clothing, supplies
and backpacks in August (a
35% increase from the year
Youth Leadership Students
before.) Two weeks before the
event an anonymous donor offered a challenge to match 50 children, and over $20,000 was raised
in the final days to meet the need. Children of all ages and backgrounds from New Milford and
surrounding towns were thrilled with their new supplies. High school students from UWWC Youth
Leadership program helped make sure distribution day was a success.
Health issues are
intertwined into
all aspects of
our lives. It affects
whether children
are able to learn in
school, a parent’s
ability to work and if
a senior can remain
independently in their
home. UWWC invested
over $1,200,000 in
health care in 2008.
