“United” has been part of our name for more than 60 years.
Even more, it has been a defining word for the work we have
done in strengthening our local communities.
Yet today, the word “united”, as embodied in our
call to “Live United”, has brought a new voice and
purpose to our work. This year we responded to
our extraordinary times by launching an interactive
“100 Days, 100 Ways We Live United” campaign
highlighting remarkable individual acts of
kindness. Whether helping a single mother prepare
a budget, finding time to read to a child, or driving
an elderly person to a doctor’s appointment, 100
days of “Tweets” proved the power of small acts.
We also launched a separate and entirely electronic
emergency basic needs campaign (“Take Five
to Give Five”) which in a few short weeks raised
desperately needed funds to support local shelters,
food pantries, clothing distribution centers and
emergency assistance programs.
While our efforts to respond to extraordinary
economic challenges may have been more visible
this year, we remain committed to long-term
strategies to help people build and sustain better
lives. Health, Income and Education remain the
three key building blocks to building a better life -
that’s who we are and what we believe.
For the first time in our country’s history, a
generation of children may be worse off than their
parents. This is true, not just economically, but in
all measures of societal success.
To address these challenges, United Way of Western
Connecticut’s recently adopted 2-year strategic plan
calls for particular attention to three key initiatives
– childhood obesity, school readiness and financial
stability. Each of these issues challenges the
potential for our next generation to lead the kind of
life we want for ourselves and our children.
Childhood obesity is critical because if we do not
address the epidemic of unhealthy kids in our own
communities, the next generation will live shorter,
less healthy lives and our health care system will
be overwhelmed by an avalanche of obesity-related
health care problems.
School Readiness (preparing kids to be successful
in school in their earliest years) is essential to
the long-term success of our communities. More
directly, children who enter school at performance
levels below those of their peers are often burdened
by this achievement gap for the rest of their lives
and in the most unexpected ways. Not only does
underachievement increase the high school dropout
rate (and future income), it also tends to put
children at a higher risk for broader social problems
like substance abuse and criminal activity. Truly
getting off to a good start can pave the way for
long-term success.
And speaking of long term success, how can we
build a strong community when there are people
struggling to make ends meet? There are those in
our community in need of the most fundamental
support from their neighbors – food, clothing
and shelter. Our goal is to provide the support
necessary for these individuals but to do so in ways
that create long-term financial stability.
You’ll be hearing more about these three key
initiatives (Strong Start, Strong Heart, Strong
Home) in the coming months, but our long standing
process of investing in our community’s success
will continue. Whether it is in Health, Income or
Education, our donor’s return on investment, as
always, is not monetary; it is long-term sustainable
impact in our community.
We live united because this is our community,
our neighborhoods, our families and our future.
Join us in becoming a mobilizing force for positive
social change. By giving people in our community
the chance to build and sustain better, more
productive and healthier lives. Live United -
GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER.
United Way gave
a call to action;
our communities
responded.
During a difficult time, we wanted to hear about the good things people were doing in spite of the recent
economic recession. So we asked volunteers, donors, and the general public, “How Do You Live United?”
For 100 days people shared their stories with us and we sent them out via Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and
our blog. It was great to catch a glimpse of just one of these actions, every day, and pause to reflect on
the good. Here are some examples:
Today, I talked to my son about the importance of giving and caring for others.
from Sam Mathis of Praxair
Today, I organized and promoted a food drive to bring much needed supplies into the community.
from Jennifer Ferraiuolo at Danbury Hospital
Today, I was a mentor to a child at Chester-Addison Community Center.
from Barbara Seith of Genworth Financial
Today, I worked with my Rotary Club to get a free dictionary to every 3rd grader in New Milford.
from Ivan Shiffman at Union Savings Bank
Today, I helped a single mother of two to get back on her feet.
from Jackie Mastrolillo of Moots, Pellegrini, Mannion, Martindale, & Dratch
Today, we collected 1,900 diapers which will be distributed to local families in need!
from Monica Rodriguez and the 8th Grade members of the Anti-Bullying Committee at Kent Center School
Today, I helped Latino parents at Stamford’s schools learn more about the risk of drugs, alcohol, and
tobacco use.
from Andres Rojas at Lower Fairfield County Regional Action Council
Today, I found a math tutor for a woman who is working toward her GED.
from Louise Moss at Women’s Mentoring Network
2 UNITED WAY OF WESTERN CONNECTICUT • 2009 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
It Only Takes Five Minutes
To Help Someone Move From
Despair To Hope. And Our
Donors Were Just The People
To Do It.
In March 2009 it was evident to United Way staff
and volunteers that the spike in demand for
basic needs was taking a toll on our nonprofit
partners. In response, UWWC decided to launch
a separate campaign in the spring to directly
support the increased needs of its community.
Using social networking tools and support from
The News-Times and The Advocate, people were
asked to Give at least $5, Advocate by using
their own personal networks to raise awareness
of the need, and Volunteer to hand out the
FamilyWize discount prescription card to those
lacking health insurance.
The Take Five to Give 5 campaign ran from May
through July 2009, and was a great success!
Many people participated during the campaign
ranging from elected officials, representatives
from social service agencies, local volunteers
and the media. As a result we were able to
infuse $87,000 back into the community!
100% of the dollars raised went directly to the
basic needs programs.
Healthy Baby Diaper
Drive a Success
As the cost of basic needs rise and unemployment
worsens, many families are facing the
difficult choice between providing food and supplies
or diapers for their babies. An adequate
monthly supply of diapers costs $100 a month
or more. Working families who may barely be
making ends meet rely on daycare providers,
who require an adequate daily supply of diapers.
Food stamps and federal WIC support do not
allow diapers as eligible purchases.
In October local businesses held diaper
drives throughout the region. Thankfully
our community responded, and over 13,000
diapers were collected.
We applaud these businesses
for heeding our call for help!
Five building blocks to financial stability
FAMILY SUSTAINING EMPLOYMENT
A full-time job that pays minimum wage cannot even
cover basic housing costs in western Connecticut.
Providing support to help individuals learn new skills,
retain employment and advance their careers helps
ensure a brighter future.
UWWC supports a range of programs that provide
job training, literacy skills, and job support for those
with disabilities.
INCOME SUPPORTS
For those whose income will not rise, support for
meeting basic needs within the limits of that income
is crucial.
UWWC supports basic needs programs to help
families who are on the brink of disaster. Funded
programs range from emergency services, soup
kitchens and clothing distribution to legal aid and
information on public assistance.
211 Navigator allows web visitors
to quickly learn whether they
might be able to get help to pay for
things like food, health insurance,
and child care. 24 state and federal
programs are linked to the program.
FamilyWize reduces the
cost of medicine for
children, families and
individuals with no prescription drug coverage. United
Way distributes discount drug cards to help families
manage their health care expenses, saving money for
other needs.
SAVINGS AND ASSETS
By improving a family’s ability to save, you open
the doors to a future of possibilities. Over 18% of
households with an annual income of $30,000 or less
GAIN and
SUSTAIN
ASSETS
INCREASE
INCOME
BUILD
SAVINGS
are ‘unbanked’, with another 20% ‘underbanked’.
Financial literacy and sound credit are vital for a
more secure future.
We also increase people’s access to Earned
Income Tax Credits through promotion of VITA
(Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) centers to help
families get the tax credits they deserve.
MANAGEABLE EXPENSES
When households spend more than 30% of their
income on housing, they may not have enough
income for other necessities such as food, clothing,
medical care, transportation, utilities or emergencies.
United Way works with programs that teach financial
literacy skills.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING
The lack of affordable housing is the top concern
cited in Stamford’s Community Needs Assessment.
In fact, the Stamford/Norwalk area remains the third
costliest rental market in the nation.
United Way has been a leader in funding
programs that range from homeless services
to home ownership.
A strong home
starts with financial
stability. United
Way strengthens
communities by
identifying and
tackling the underlying
causes of the most
serious social issues
facing our local
neighbors. One of the
most critical is the
financial instability
of low-to-moderate
income families.
UNITED WAY WORKS TO ELIMINATE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
Every child deserves a strong start. Yet almost half of America’s kindergartners enter school unprepared,
with at-risk & impoverished children already 1-2 years behind.
The positive significance of a high quality early childhood experience to a child’s future success is
well documented.
United Way is targeting resources to improving quality early childhood learning in the region. We are
investing dollars, taking a leadership role and finding creative ways to partner with others to ensure all
children are ready for school in our region.
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE WAY THE BRAIN DEVELOPS
Infant and toddler brain nerve cells are formed and connected every time the child
is exposed to a human interaction or event in the environment. We literally have the
ability to shape a child’s brain for success.
A child’s first teacher is family. That’s why United Way supports Born Learning, a public engagement
campaign helping families, caregivers and communities to build on early learning for young children. When
adults interact with children – talking, singing, and playing rhyming games – they stimulate language and
vocabulary development and build important foundations for learning to read. Born Learning offers fun
activities for parents and caregivers to engage their child.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS LEADING THE WAY
United Way is actively involved in early childhood and educational aspects in all of our communities.
Community plans have been developed in Stamford and Danbury to ensure that all children are ready for
school, and United Way has been a key partner and leader in this process. Plans include a broad range of
strategies such as improving literacy among children and their families, ensuring that the transition to school
is successful, and encouraging participation in high quality preschools. To see a copy of the community plans
visit our website at www.uwwesternct.org
The annual Early Childhood Fair has become an event families look forward to in Stamford. United Way
volunteers install Born Learning Trails at this event, and at a variety of parks, that get children moving
and learning in a fun way.
IMAGINATION LIBRARY PUTS BOOKS INTO EVERY CHILD’S HANDS
Graduation from high school can be predicted reasonably well by a child’s
reading skills at the end of third grade. That’s why Imagination Library is
such an important program under our StrongStart initiative.
This innovative partnership with the Dollywood Foundation offers free
books every month to children ages four and under. The program was
piloted in Danbury and is now expanding to other towns.
The early years
of a child’s life
significantly
impact language
skills, social
and emotional
development, and
school readiness.
THE STATISTICS ARE STARTLING
Childhood obesity has tripled since 1980.
Negative outcomes of obesity in children include poor
academic performance, increased mental stress, and
increased risks for health consequences.
Obesity has become one of the most important public health
issues with related health care costs of $117 billion annually.
CT State Dept of Ed standardized fitness test for Danbury school
system shows a steady decline in children passing. In 2007/2008
only 19% passed.
In Connecticut, the gap between racial and economic groups is
significant when it comes to overweight and obesity rates. One in
four children (27.3%) are overweight or obese.
Nearly one in three Hispanic (32.4%) and almost one in two
African Americans (44.9%) are overweight or obese.
STAMFORD’S CHILDHOOD OBESITY TASK FORCE
Under the leadership of Stamford Hospital, a city-wide childhood obesity task force is addressing this
health epidemic among our children. The task force focuses on the preventive health message of 5-2-1-0:
For each day, 5 fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour or more of physical activity,
With the challenging vision to make the greater Danbury community the healthiest in Connecticut,
United Way co-chairs this Danbury-based group that has been addressing the childhood obesity epidemic
for the past four years. After gathering extensive local data, the group is launching the Healthy Kids Pilot
Program. This program will engage in strategies that will result in improved CT Physical Fitness scores
for an elementary school in Danbury, with the intention of expansion to the whole system.
HEALTHY COMMUNITY 2020
Healthy Community 2020 was established in New Milford as a collaborative for health
professionals and service providers. Its primary focus is on community fitness, child and adult
obesity, and the availability of dental services for the uninsured. To address obesity in 2007,
efforts included The Walking Project, a month long event where 17 fifth grade classes
partnered with a community business to increase their daily exercise.
United Way is a key partner and leader within the Stamford, Danbury and New Milford
coalitions as we launch our strong heart initiative.
Our children
must become
healthier and
childhood
obesity must
be eliminated.
Their future
depends on it.
