ESD Booster Club Friends, Family and Sponsors,As a lifelong Dallasite, I have known of ESD since it was established (I had the job to collectthe money and restock the soft drink machine at ESD’s original campus while I was anHP sophomore). However, it was only upon my family’s decision to move back to Dallasfrom Austin three years ago, and our children’s acceptance into ESD, that I learned of itsspecial sense of community. For our family, the Booster Club was our connection, ourspot to plug-in to ESD. As anyone that has attended an Eagle Night can tell you, ESD Eaglesports is the platform that the entire school can share. A Lower School kindergarten girlcan watch her babysitter perform as a varsity cheerleader; a fifth grade Middle School boycan revel in seeing his “big brother” protect the goal when a ball is fired in that direction ina varsity lacrosse game. From the hundreds of volunteer hours needed to produce theseasonal Eagle Nights and year round concessions, to the fundraising dollars generated bymembership dues and the ESD Open golf tournament, the ESD Booster Club provides bothservice and additional financial resources to the entire ESD community through athletics.Originally organized by a group of ESD parents to fill in the funding gaps of theathletic department, the ESD Booster Club is now an official school organization withinthe ESD Parents’ Association and is dedicated to specifically supporting ALL ESD Eagleathletic teams. Some perceive the ESD Booster Club as being a male, football-only, club.Nothing could be further from the truth. A review of the past two years of the gifts made bythe Booster Club to the individual sporting teams of ESD will find that no funds have beenspecifically allocated to football; rather monies have been gifted to the needs of specificsports like crew (new racing oars) and women’s field hockey/lacrosse (portable soundsystem). The largest percentage of funding has been given to the training andweight rooms which are of benefit to all ESD students. One of the goals of this year’s board is for the Booster Club to become even moreinclusive of the entire ESD community, with additional efforts to incorporate the Lower andMiddle Schools into club activities of service and fundraising. A message heard loud andclear from parents is the need for concessions service down to the middle school gamelevel. By automating our recruitment to allow for volunteer sign-up from the Booster Clubpage, www.esdallas.org/booster, we are hoping to establish concessions service to MiddleSchool sports for the 2011 – 2012 school year. In addition, we hope to further tap into theenergy and spirit of the Lower School with new events like the “Lower School Night” footballgame and the recent spring “Movie Night” held in cooperation with theDads’ Partnership. All of our best efforts and plans cannot be realized without your support, both in timeand treasure. You would not be reading this today if you did not already understand andappreciate the mission of the ESD Booster Club. I encourage you to once again renew yourmembership either on-line at the Booster Club page (www.esdallas.org/booster) or usingthe membership envelope included in this mailing. Most importantly, please help us with the donation of your time. We all want to seeour children while they are playing. It is for this reason that we will be soliciting volunteersfor coverage of games that do not conflict with your child’s playing schedule. For example, varsity football parents could be encouraged to volunteer their time during a varsityvolleyball game. Varsity volleyball parents could return the favor by helping out at footballgames. While only an example, it is our hope that we can increase our concessionscoverage of home games at all three of our concession facilities to provide the same serviceas our peer schools offer.Thank you for your continued support of the ESD Booster Club. Go Eagles!Brad BeutelPresidentBooster Club Funds 2011-2012 AthleticWish ListThe ESD Booster Club raises funds each year through memberships andconcession sales, and uses these funds to assist the ESD athletic program. Each year, coaches are asked to submit requests for unbudgeted items tothe ESD athletic department – and the “Wish List” is born. Senior SamTaCito became stronger at face off with each game and was instrumentalin regionals by winning the majority of possessions. John Stephen Khourywas a key player in defense, transitioning the ball down the field, as well asplaying offense as a midfielder. The injured Angus Klamer returned duringplayoffs at the Attack position and made an immediate impact to the team. Also contributing greatly on offense were Jack Beare, Hayden Wilson,Michael Collins, and Barrett Anigian. Jack Blair and Blake Moore were bothcontributors early and then suffered injuries. On defense, the junior trioof Wells Waller, Wiley Hunsaker, and Hunter Moorewere a force while Grant Nichols, ReedSeidel, Ryan Converse, and Foster Hugginsmade their marks, too. Also in the Class of ‘12are two strong goaliesin Bennett Beutel andStephen Shanley.ESD travelled to Austin forthe SPC tournament as thesecond seed in North Zone. After dispatching Kincaideasily, they played St Mark’s in the final. In a closely matched, heated battle, the Lions emerged as the victor. After SPC, the Eagles finished their Northdistrict season strongly and beat Plano Senior High convincingly. With thewin, ESD advanced to the Super-Regionals as the third seed.Super-Regionals were also held in Austin. ESD easily defeated HoustonChristian (HC), scoring eleven goals by halftime and holding HC scoreless. Each team added four goals in the second half, but ESD came out on top– the final score was ESD15 and HC 4. The Eagles then faced Austin High, which had defeated ESD earlier in the season in overtime. In a hard foughtgame, ESD emerged victorious 8-4, and secured its first State Tournamentbid in three years. In the State Tournament, held at the Woodlands, ESDunfortunately faltered to strong second-seed Dallas Jesuit (4-7) in the semifinalgame. The offense was led by JoeFojtasek, Landon Cibulka, Matthew Redish, PrestonCrow, Jack Hart, and, early in theseason, Chris Merritt. ESD Lacrosse: Varsity WomenESD Varsity Women’s Lacrosse was coached by Head Coach Patty Wickand Assistant Coach Nancy Franklin. The coaching staff included JuniorVarsity Coaches Katy Smullen and Katie Grunst. The team captains wereMandy Martin, Hannah Smith, and Madeleine Walton. The team had awinning overall record of 14-6, non-conference 10-4 and conference 4-2.“This was by far the smallest teamI have ever coached and the mostathletically-talented group of girls,”said Coach Wick. “Their flexibilityand ability to play in any positionon the field allowed us to maximizeour athletic talent. Their fun andpositive attitudes combined withoutstanding work ethics mademy job as a coach very enjoyableand easy.” She went on to state that the most enjoyable part ofcoaching the team was “getting to interact with the players every day andgetting to know them as uniquely strong and confident young women.”The team this year impressed the coach as being “the most positive,hard- working, non-complaining, close knit, athletically talented, respectful, continuously improving, and FUN mix of personalities of any group of youngwomen I have ever coached.” Coach Wick indicated it was an honor to getto work with this group of lacrosse players. The team had a great opportunity this year to play in Cowboy’s Stadiumin Arlington. ESD beat this year’s eventual state champion, St. John’s, in thatcontest. Another favorite memory was the game against Hockaday. ESDtook the ball from Hockaday with 45 seconds left, leading to a Remy Klamergoal that tied the score with 4 seconds left. In overtime, Lauren Maguire tiedthe game with less than one second left. The team had just one graduating senior, Dartmouth-signee MandyMartin. Coach Wick characterized Martin’s impact as “ powerfully positive,”her work ethic as “strong,” and said she will be missed. However, shebelieves the outlook for herreturning team is extremelypositive, with her young teamhaving had the experience ofthis season.Captains Hannah Smith,Mandy Martin, and MadeleineWalton looked back on theseason and said, “Our 2011lacrosse season was a greatexperience. Even though we hada small team, we were all extremely close and had great chemistry on andoff the field. Not making it to the state tournament was disappointing, but weended strong with a 3rd place finish in SPC, and we are all looking forwardto continuing to improve towards getting a championship title next year!”Lauren Maguire, Remy Klamer, Hannah Smith were named All-SPC;Kelsey Montgomery, Hannah Smith, Remy Klamer, and LaurenMaguire were named All-North Zone. This group of ladies achieved a number of successes, both on and off the field. The season opened with an exciting gameagainst Hockaday. After a challenging first half, the Eagles foundthemselves facing a sixgoaldeficit at half time.Nevertheless, the team rallied inthe second half -- winning 50/50balls and scoring six unanswered goals to tie the score.Over spring break, the team worked on stick skills and fundamentalsthrough training sessions held at ESD. Their hard work andeffort in spring training paid off. The Eagles had two really strongperformances against nationally-ranked St. Stephen’s & St. AgnesSchool (VA), and local rival Highland Park.A trip to Houston mid-way through the season proved to be agreat experience for the squad, showcasing their skill developmentand growth throughout the season. Key wins against Cy-Fair andThe Woodlands bolstered the Eagles’ confidence and gave them thespark they needed to finish the season strong. While the team’s on-field successes were tremendous, theiroff-field successes were just as significant, and in many ways morefar-reaching. Many of the players participated in both varsity andJV games throughout the season, often playing an early JV gameand staying late for a varsity game. During the post-season, theyworked hard to help the program prepare for State Playoffs and SPCby coming to varsity practices and taking on the “playing style” ofparticular opponents. All of these things helped to strengthen theirgrowth and development as players, but required significant hardwork and commitment. For this, they should be commended. Thisgroup of ladies had a tremendous attitude and work ethic throughoutthe season, and truly demonstrated what it meant to be a part of ateam. This is a success they should be incredibly proud of, becauseit has earned them the respect of their coaches and peers and set agreat standard for ESD Women’s Lacrosse! – Coach Katie GrunstThe ESD JV Women included Emma Boulle, Emily Fitzgerald, KarleyKampf, Caroline Oden, Molly McGregor, Maddie Rhone, MeganRooney, Kelsey Wade, and Olivia Winton. n5

The teamimproved its recordfrom last year and most players had an opportunity to play multiple positionsthroughout the season. Coach Newman said that he expects this group ofboys to provide a strong foundation in the JV baseball program next year. The team was coached by Coach Newman and included: Brock Anglin,Paul Cahoon, John Cannata, Damon Colonnetta, Alexander Eggers, HarryHull, Brock Neurohr, and Jeffery Taber. Many thanks to the 7th gradeplayers that played to round out this team. nESD Baseball: 7th Grade BoysThe ESD 7th grade baseball team had a very productive spring season.Coach Mathews said “Vast improvements were made by each player asthey came out to practice every day eager to improve their skills. Theboys enjoyed playing so much that by the end of the season the playerswere begging me to play more baseball! The coachinggoals I set at the beginningwith the team were all metand exceeded. The boysbecame better ballplayers, learned how to think of theteam before they think ofthemselves, worked hard, hustled, and developedinto mature young men.Baseball went from being an afterthought to the topicof discussion. It truly is an exciting time to play baseballin the ESD program, and I’m honored to be a part of it.” Some highlightsof the season included Jonathan King’s inside the park home run againstHome School, Grant Krumholz’s superb hitting against Cistercian Prep,Trent Hagar’s pitching, and Cristian Savoldelli’s big league style diving playin foul territory. Due to lower numbers on the 8th grade team, some of theteam members also played in some 8th grade games. The team was coached by Luke Matthews. Team members includedGraham Makel, Parker Levy, Zack Schwartz, Michael Reynolds, AlexTong, Jonathan King, Christian Savoldelli, Trent Hagar, Sam Downie,Grant Krumholz, Jack Colonnetta, Boone Munson, and Paul Cox. n

ESD Softball: Middle SchoolMiddle School Softball had a good season. Some highlights were victoriesover Greenhill’s seventh and eighth grade teams, Fort Worth Country Day,Hockaday and Trinity Christian Academy. The Middle School Softball team was coached by Mark Gardner andincluded 7th graders Katelyn Curtis, Zoe Long, and Madeline Smith and 8thgraders Rachel Hersh, Gretchen Mahoney, Allison McPherson, CarolinePratt, Christina Radford, Marisa Soto, and Alaina VanPelt. nESD Softball: VarsityESD Varsity Softball took fourth place in Division II of SPC after substantiallyelevating their play for SPC. Kaitlyn Hansen ’11, 4th year shortstop, HaleyVander Linden ’11, 2nd year second baseman, and Madison Bassett ’11,1st year right fielder, finishedtheir senior year with agreat tournament. The regular season broughta few good wins but alsodisappointing defeats and sometough injuries. Virginia Puckett’14 had a season-ending injury toher knee in her rookie season ascatcher, and when center fielderHeidi Hall ’12 took over for Puckett, shetoo suffered a crippling knee injury while behind the plate. The Eagles’outfield also felt the loss of Hall’s experience for several games;fortunately, she was able to return to center field in time for SPC.Hansen made the move from shortstop to catch for the remainder of theseason for 3-year veteran starting pitcher Catherine Cannata ’12. SydneyNarvaez ’13, a pitcher and outfielder, took over at short. With second yearplayer Anna Leib ’12 at first, rookies Emily Bassel and Megan Sims ’14sharing the third base position, and Maya Harris ’13, Mary Cole Daulton ’13,and Catlin Young ’14 working the outfield, the new battery and fielders had ashort time to regroup before SPC.The Eagles had a strong first round performance in SPC, earning ESDa berth in the semi-final contest, by defeating St. Mary’s Hall 15 to 1. Keydefensive plays were Cannata’s five strikeouts and her high grab of a fly ball, and Haley and Anna’s multiple (4-3) plays for outs. ESD led 7-1 after three. The fourth inning proved exciting as the first SMH batter took first on a hit bypitch. But ESD executed a double play on Kaitlyn’s catch of a pop- up, herthrow to Haley, and Haley’s throw to Anna to get the runner. After a fly-outto Haley for out three, ESD came up to bat and added eight runs to put thegame away. The Eagles were poised to face Greenhill (“GH”), the top North Zoneseed in DII, later that day. GH had defeated ESD twice in the regular season, but in this game the Eagles held GH scoreless for three innings, retiring theshocked Hornets quickly. The Eagles never backed down. Every pitch, every move was a potential game changer.GH finally scored one run in the 4th inningon two hits. With two outs and one on (a fly-outto Haley and Catherine fielding to 1B), Kaitlynand Haley executed a throw-down at 2B toretire the side. Sydney started the fifth bystroking her third base hit of the game. But asshe attempted to steal second, she tripped sohard she wound up in a somersault, and wastagged out. However, Catherine got aboardon balls and stole home for the tying run afterKaitlyn got a base hit, then baited GH to throwto second. Anna brought in Kaitlyn with anRBI, and ESD took the lead. GH was held scorelessin the half inning, with Emily making two (5-3) plays to Anna and Catherinestriking out the last batter swinging. The score was ESD 2, GH 1.In the sixth, ESD held GH to just two more runs, although the top of theorder hit two consecutive doubles and a single to tie it up. ESD prevented arun with a tag at the plate by Kaitlyn. Haley fielded to first for out 2. AnotherGH hit brought in another run, but Catherine kept her composure and struckout the next batter looking. With the score ESD 2, GH 3, inning seven put ESD in a must-scoresituation. They did. Kaitlyn got a base hit, stole bases, and with two outs, slidinto home for the tying run on a steal. Now GH had to score to win the game. A batter reached base on ballsand advanced to 3B on a bizarre balk call. When GH hit a SAC fly, there wasnothing ESD could do to prevent the run. The game was suddenly over, ESD3, GH 4. Despite the loss, it was probably ESD’s best game of the season. The Eagles definitely surprised andchallenged GH with a very tough contest.Austin St. Andrews appeared asthe Game 3 opponent, the only teamthat had defeated ESD in the 2010 SPCtournament (after two controversial calls(2-1)). Cannata quickly put an ESD runon with support from hits by Hansenand Leib. ESD shut out SA in the 1stwith a 1-3 play to Leib, and two fantasticcatches in center by Heidi Hall. In the 2nd,SA went down 1, 2, 3 on two fly-outs and a K . SA then scored four, but ESDrallied, with a double by Emily, RBI by Haley, double and RBI by Maya, ahit by Madi, and RBI by Sydney. The score was ESD 3 and SA 4. But SAresponded with a lead-off triple and six more runs - finally retired on two Ksand a (5-3) play by Emily. A huge seventh inning by ESD was necessary.ESD was hopeful as Hansen led off with a base hit after the count went to atense 2-2. But, alas, the Eagles couldn’t get in the runs they needed. Thefinal score was10-3, and ESD took fourth place in DII.Catherine was named All-SPC and Kaitlyn received All-North Zone andMVP. For the ESD softball record books, Kaitlyn took second for careertriples and third for both career hits and doubles. Catherine is currentlyranked third all-time in triples for a season and she led the team in hits thisyear with 16. Sydney Narvaez took the all-time lead in season on-basepercentage (0.727) as she had 14 hits and 20 BBs from the lead off position.Haley Vander Linden and Anna Leib (MIP) both reached double digits in hitsthis year. The team was coached by Billy Redmon, Ashton McBride, andMike Schneider. Captains were Catherine Cannata, Haley Vander Linden, and Kaitlyn Hansen.
