Well Wasn’t that a Party!! e cake turned out beautifully and we were treated to another scrumptious feast by
St. George’s. Sorry the forks and napkins were late! Valerie Giles a great friend
of Margaret’s came all the way from Prince George to be at the party. As
Maria-Teresa (Jones) Newell ’63 Peru wrote from Washington “Dr. Margaret
Connolly’s 90th Birthday! Cameras clicked and flashed everywhere, the
atmosphere was filled with the warm Spirit of our Sacred Heart and I loved it
when Sr. Margaret started her talk by asking if we knew the meaning of the
initials, AMASC which we did, of course, a great reminder of who we are and
how we relate to each other in the love of one Sacred Heart Family around the world.” Valerie Giles
Sandi Sasaki borrowed my camera and took darling
little movies of the day which we look forward to
showing you on November 19th along with some
gorgeous stills. Joan Ripley also took lovely photos;
several of which will be featured in the newsletter
and on the DVD.
What fun we had singing the Ugandan Jubilee
Song as you will see.
e Motion to accept our Revised Constitution
personnel in November. e building is sporting ½
a gorgeous new roof with beautiful copper downpipes
window frames have been painted a lovely Heritage
City and Heritage Society
have condemned e
beautiful iron work has
been saved and may pop
Marguerite Goldsmith ’69 clicked from
Burnaby that she had a frantic, sleepless
beginning to her wonderful trip to some of
the most spiritual places on earth. Marguerite
organized a group from her parish to go to
World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid.
“World Youth Day is a great worldwide
encounter, a pilgrimage, to meet with the
Pope and to celebrate our faith. It is a chance
to experience in first person the universality of
the Church and it is a great boost to your faith
life. It is also a great lesson in patience. First
off, we just about had to leave some of the
group behind because their visas almost didn't
arrive on time. With the help of some great
people at Fedex, the visas arrived Saturday
afternoon, the day before we were scheduled
to leave. I think this set the pace for the rest
of the pilgrimage. We were always hurrying
from one event to the other.
We made it a true pilgrimage; we went first to
Fatima, then to our Day's in the Diocese in
Sevilla. If you ever have a chance to go to
Sevilla, don't hesitate. e hospitality was
wonderful. e Churches hosted 6,000
pilgrims for 3 days prior to the events in
Madrid. We were kept on the go from
sunrise to past midnight. ey don't eat
dinner till 10 pm or so.
Madrid, well was Madrid. ere were at least
900,000 participants. e English speaking
events we went to in the Love and Life Center,
hosted over 30,000 pilgrims a day. ere were
crowds everywhere and it was very hot. But
we all had a great time. Some of our group,
including myself did not get into the closing
Mass. ey closed the area in the early
afternoon. as the authorities were worried
about the crowds. Well over a million people
including not only the World Youth Day
participants but I am sure most of Madrid and
its surroundings showed up at Cuantor
Vientos for the closing Mass,. We ended our
World Youth Day pilgrimage with a stop in
Zaragoza and Lourdes before returning
home, tired but happy. In the words of Pope
Benedict XVI "ank you, young people, you
rejuvenate the Pope, inspire the Church &
refresh a world thirsty for hope and courage."
I was rejuvenated. See you in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, 2013.”
Class of ’59
THE ’59ERS ARE GATHERING YET AGAIN . . . . . . .
e ’59ers continue to meet in smaller groups for luncheons and
dinners but our second official event happened this year when we
celebrated our collective seventieth year on this planet – wow what a
party. e day dawned with a lovely clear blue sky – an absolutely
beautiful sunny and perfect day. e hostesses, Pam (Wilman)
Brammall, Janet (McDermott) Morris, Linda (Hartman) Katz were
busy at Pam’s gorgeous house on the patio completing the final
touches. e beautifully decorated- balloons and pink flamingos
swayed in the breeze, the champagne sat in the ice bucket ready to be
opened, the beautiful exquisite china cups, saucers and plates were all
set out and the food was on the table. e table was covered with little
thinly sliced sandwiches, chocolate strawberries, chocolate éclairs, tiny
scones just waiting for the jam and cream, and little birthday fondant
cakes and we were back in the fifties – the scene was truly set and then
everybody arrived, fifties outfits, hats, gloves, bows, and the birthday
party began. e champagne flowed, the laughter rang, we giggled, we
laughed, the cameras clicked, clicked, clicked and clicked some more.
A true re-enactment of the time when we had those tea parties at Ann
Kirby’s place on the Crescent and Linda Hartman’s place on 33rd –
the hats, the bows, the white gloves. Our tea culminated with
chocolate fondant individual birthday cakes each decorated with a
lighted candle; we sang a collective happy birthday to ourselves, blew
out our candles and quickly devoured our gorgeous birthday cakes.
We never seem to be short of things to talk about, trips to plan and
certainly are to be considered healthy robust 70 year olds with a
continued zest for life chatting about our plans and projects for the
future.
What a day, what fun and what a way to celebrate our seventieth year
on this planet. We are all forever grateful that we are all so healthy and
at this time in our lives ‘we are loving it’.
We must mention that we also had two very special guests at the Party
- our own very special honorary ’59er Airlie Ogilvie, Alum President,
who also sported a true vintage 50’s gorgeous outfit with matching hat
(spectacular) and, of course, not to be forgotten our class mascot,
Champagne Bubbles, who was celebrating her fifth July birthday that
week. She sported her pink feathered hat and was found spread out on
a chaise lounge, wearing her hat with matching purse and necklace
worn like a true lady of the Sacred Heart.
We are truly proving the saying – ‘like wine we get better with age’.
seem to slow down. I’ve told you about the
bi birthd birthday hday party but now n let me tell you about our other activities – on a
gorgeous day in Ma May, Maralen (Read) Rencher had an absolutely
stunning lunch at he her beautiful condo out in Tsawwassan. Genevieve de
Laigue de La Taille called from Paris to wish us well and she had a
chance to have a few words with most of us. e food was beautiful and
the wine was crisp and cold, the conversation was lively and fun was had
by all.
Summer brought the class oof
’65 a special visitor from Mexico City. Dora
Elia Malo spent a month in
our area. Her trip included an Alaskan cruise
with her son and daughter, a
visit with her close friend, Paula (Grewal)
Paulus in Anacortes, WA and a week in Vancouver where she stayed with
Susan Burton. Dora even flew to Nanaimo for a quick weekend visit with
the Zorkin family and a reunion with Jana (Marianna) and Debbie.
Dora's week in Vancouver was filled with events: Patty (Cotterall)
Sturgess sponsored a dinner at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, Barbara
(Mioduszewski) Caelles organized a walk-about in Steveston where we ate
fish and chips on the dock, Lou Morrow hosted a pot luck dinner and
walk-about in beautiful, sunny Deep Cove, and Madeline (Bogie Gerenscer)
von Fersen arranged a final dinner at Friache in West Vancouver
where we enjoyed gourmet dining and a fabulous sunset view of the city.
Classmates who were able to attend the various events include: Marg
(Petrie) Weiss, Marie (Dumont) Low, Kathleen (Gilraine) Rogers, Ann
(Gendron) Bird, Carol (McCullough) Martin, Joan (Tomblin) Morris,
Airlie Ogilvie, and Heather (Shaw) Swofford who came up from Whidbey
Island, WA. Many other class members clicked in with their well
wishes. Needless to say Dora was just thrilled as were all of us to see and
catch up with one another. Dora clicked: “ank you to each one of you
for the fabulous holiday, hope to see you very soon. And you know there
will always be a place for you in Mexico.”
May 2011 - Lunch at Maralen (Read) Rencher’s
Also in March we had a luncheon at Forno Beachside Cafe in
Ambleside, West Vancouver, and many attended with Edit Jablanczy
Ellis getting the bus in all the way from Abbotsford and staying with
Marie Gerencser Jessup overnight so she could attend the lunch – I
understand they spent most of the night chatting. Also Joan Goulet
James made it all the way in by bus from Whistler. We’re loving it.
Janet McDermott Morris
Ann Kirby Speer is now in town again after a selling her condo and moving over from Victoria. She has been so motivated to get back to town
because because her daughter is here and she is also al so excited that she can now attend our gatherings. Welcome home Ann – we are so looking
forward to spending some time tim with you. you
Dear Point Grey Alumnae,
Formal Announcement Letter September 8th, 2011
from e Canadian Provincial Council
is news from Ottawa will bring changes to the RSCJ structure
of health care at Barat Residence in Halifax as well as bringing
real change to the Society of the Sacred Heart in Canada.
As you read in the September 8th Formal Announcement, Saint
Madeleine Sophie had something lovely to say about change.
Do keep e Canadian Provincial Council in your thoughts
and prayers as “formal dialogue and discernment about possibilities
for collaboration between RSCJ in Canada and the United
States with regard to leadership and governance, in the light of
life and mission” unfold.
As I said to Mary Finlayson, rscj, Canadian Provincial “ank
you for all you do in your position as Provincial. e job
certainly has its ups and downs.”
As we, Children of the Sacred Heart, join in Spirit with the
Society, may the results of the discussions bring the very best
decisions possible.
Your prayers and thoughts will make all the difference.
MONICA & DAVID
Winner of The Best Documentary : Tribeca Film Festival
MONICA & DAVID explores the marriage of two adults with Down syndrome and the family who strives
to support their needs. Monica and David are blissfully in love and want what other adults have —
an independent life.
The director, Alexandra Codina is a graduate of Carrollton School
of the Sacred Heart and Monica‛s cousin. I am quite sure you will
be as amazed at the beautiful story portrayed as those at the
Miami AASH Conference were.
Here is one of Alexandra‛s reactions to a question posed about
her winning documentary.
What do you hope audiences will take away from the film? I
hope that people will see Monica, David and other people with
disabilities as individuals. Not heroes, nor victims, but people who
are striving to lead ordinary lives. Enjoy.
BECAUSE OF YOUR GENEROSITY
The Ugandan Farmers have their Boda Boda to transport their milk to Market!
Fiona received this wonderful email from Susan
Anyango, rscj.
Dear Fiona,
Greetings from Uganda. Thank you so much for the
donation for the Boda Boda. Please in the pictures you
will see part of the farm and the manager happily riding
the bike. Thank you for this precious gift that has enabled
us to simplify our transport. May the Lord bless you on
our behalf and give you the strength and health you need
to continue with your work.
With our gratitude and prayers, Susan
Joseph standing beside the Boda Boda
We celebrated the Ugandan Jubilee by singing the actual
song to be sung at the Jubilee Party in Uganda on July 2nd,
2011 here in Vancouver at our June 4th Meeting.
We had the words from Margie Conroy in her wonderful
Newsletter BUT...
How could we get the tune figured out at such long distance?
Our wonderful Alum and musical wizard Armande (Lavertu)
Morton ’63 came to the rescue. She clicked the nuns in
Uganda and left her phone number so they could call her in
Victoria. Armande then taped them singing the beautiful
song over the phone. She then transcribed the tune into sheet
music form and clicked it over to my computer. (I made
several to hand out at the meeting)
Armande gave her tape recorder to Joan Ripley ’60 who
brought it to our meeting containing Armande playing the
song on her piano and counting out the time for all of us to
follow.
I wrote to Susan to tell her how thrilled I was at
this news.
Dear Susan,
I just received news from Fiona Walsh that the RSCJ farm
in Uganda has a new Boda Boda to help the farmers get
their milk to market. I am just thrilled that Fiona’s
Passion to make a difference for the RSCJ farmers and our
donations from our Sacred Heart Alumnae Association in
Vancouver have made this purchase possible. Thank you
so much for the pictures of the Boda Boda and the lovely
cattle originally purchased by the Dutch Alumnae. The
Vancouver Point Grey Alumnae will love seeing the
pictures in the Fall Newsletter.
With much love, Airlie
Fiona and I led the 42 Alums who attended through two
verses and the choruses. I think we all did a wonderful job
considering we had such little practice.
It was great fun. What a wonderful long distance Alumnae
experience we all had!
Fiona and Airlie with Armande's tape recorder held high
As Margie Conroy, rscj clicked: “Yesterday was lovely! ere
was nothing I could do to prevent disaster or promote success
so I just relaxed. e amplifying system I worried so much
about turned out to have no batteries so the play had to be
done without amplification in the open air. But the girls did
speak very clearly and loudly so a good many heard them.
ey began by singing the story of the Sacred Heart Sisters
very loud and clear. ..... I particularly liked what the Church
of Uganda Bishop of our area said. "You Sacred Heart Sisters
have love poured into your hearts by the Heart of Christ and
The Kongole Old Girls Association (KOGA for short)
Celebrated the Jubilee with enthusiasm on July 2nd.
We could have joined in on their song!!!!!!!!!
you pour that love into the hearts of your students." May it
be true, because it certainly sums up what we want to do....It
was getting dark by the time it all ended and the meal turned
out to be supper, not lunch, but no one seemed to mind. e
day was very well organized by the school and by one of the
Old Girls, Valentina Lokol, and I can only thank the Lord
for the event and for Valentina and ask him to pour out his
Spirit of love on all who prepared for it and participated in it
in any way.”
upholds the values of loyalty, honesty and integrity.
Sister Margaret, on behalf of the class of 1959 & special
friends, on June 11, 2011, presented the above book award.
e recipient, Justin Kho, received 1000 Sacred Places by
Christopher Engles.
Justin has been with the Academy since grade 10 and was
consistently on the honour roll. Captain of his basketball
team, he is a real leader among the boys. Last year he
achieved his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award and has
received several Principal’s Honour Pins. He regularly serves
mass at his local parish and is an active volunteer on school
projects such as the Holy Cross Cemetery restoration project
as well as service in his community.
Our class had committed funds for this Award for twenty
14
years. We recently had a letter from Mr. Marchand, Principal,
of the Academy advising us that they have made the
decision that after our fund has expired that this Award
would continue to be made ‘in perpetuity’ on our behalf so
the legacy from our class will carry on – kind of nice feeling
for all of us to know that as a group we now have this Award
in our name given forever. Our real intent was to give
something to the young students albeit symbolically from the
mature generation to the young generation in the name of
our foundress. I think we have accomplished that intent.
We received a lovely note from our Provincial, Mary Finlayson,
rscj for the card we sent on her mother Irene’s passing in
Winnipeg on May 11th, 2011. “I want to thank the Pt. Grey
Alumnae for their very generous memorial enrolment for my
thoughtful. Please pass along my thanks.”
We have sent a prayer card to the Cary Family on the passing
of their dear family member, Agnes Carey ’39 of CSH
Class of ‘39’s Graduation picture was prominently displayed in
the school parlour. Agnes died in Vancouver this September at
88 after an acute bout with cancer.
We received a lovely card of thanks from Diane Remien
Tymick on the passing of her wonderful husband Henry who
of Life and Mass. “it was so moving to see and hear from
some of Harriet's family members; she had 10 grandchildren
and 20 great-grandchildren.”
(McKeen) Cooke ’68 as both their mother and stepfather
passed away last Fall and they lost another family member in
February.
mother in law of 4, and grandmother of 7, day care provider,
