33% of our families are from Kent and Sussex Counties in Delaware and 1% have traveled
internationally to stay here; the rest of the families have come to us from across the nation.
The House is truly as close as you
can get to a “home away from home.”
In 2008 when the Rost family made their first trip to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, they stayed
at a local hotel before learning about the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware. Once the Sykesville, Maryland
family learned how close the House was to the hospital there was “one less thing to worry about.” Taylor, along
with his dad Todd, mom Kimberly, and brother Brendon knew that when they needed to return for Taylor’s
upcoming orthopedic surgery they would have a place to stay.
The Rost’s describe their experience: “The Ronald McDonald House is truly as close as you can get to a “home
away from home.” The comfort of knowing that the House offers a safe, quiet, home-like atmosphere made
us feel a little less anxious. Since Taylor’s surgery, we have returned to the hospital quite frequently for follow
up visits and have stayed at the House. Taylor really enjoys spending time in the library and getting an item
from the Treasure Chest, which is usually a book. Some of our visits have coincided with holidays (Christmas,
Halloween, and Valentine’s Day) and we are always in awe of the decorations and fun events the House offers the
children and families. Taylor loved when the Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile came to the House. The most important
thing we have learned from and experienced is the kindness and compassion of the staff and volunteers. The
organizations and families that provide food and the pet visits are wonderful. It is also humbling for us to see
what other children and families are experiencing. It allows us to really see what’s important.”
During one of their initial visits they learned of the pop-tab collections and how it benefits the House by offsetting
operating costs. The Rost family wanted to find a way to give back to the House and decided to begin collecting
pop tabs at home. They shared their experiences with family and friends. The Rost’s recounted the remarkable
things that the House offers and asked family and friends to start saving the tabs. Kimberly’s mom really took that
idea and shared it with local organizations and her friends. The family also obtained the little pop tab houses and
placed them in local businesses. They name their efforts “Tabs for Taylor”. Through word of mouth, the pop tabs
have been pouring in. They are collected, counted and bagged or boxed. On their last two visits, they have been
able to donate close to one million tabs! This does not include the tabs donated on previous visits! Thankfully,
Taylor doesn’t have to return for a follow up visit for a year. They will still continue to collect the pop tabs and
will probably deliver them even if they don’t have an appointment scheduled. Otherwise, they may have to rent
a U-Haul to bring them all up next year!
Thank you to the following family and friends of Taylor who have made “Tabs for Taylor” possible:
If you are interested in donating tabs like the Rost family, here are some things to remember:
• We can only take aluminum pop tabs. The safest bet is tabs
from soda cans. However, you can check with
a magnet to see if they are aluminum:
If they are steel or a different metal,
they will stick to the magnet, while
aluminum tabs will not.
• You can also collect tabs and bring them to your
local recycling center and send the proceeds to 1901
Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803.
Dear Friends of the Ronald McDonald House
In my last letter, I extended a personal invitation to you to be a part of the 20th anniversary
celebration, The Red Shoe Affair, on September 30th. As I write to you this month, the glow
of The Red Shoe Affair is still fresh with so many thanks to be offered. I’ll start with thanks to
Barclays for hosting us in their magnificent Riverfront setting. Never have their lobby, atrium and
2nd floor looked as festive! Next, I recognize the co-chairs of the sold-out event, Michael Waite
and Craig Shor. The evening would not have been possible without their leadership and the
tireless work of the dedicated Red Shoe Affair committee. Each of you spent many, many hours
in creating an evening to remember. On behalf of the Board of Directors and Pam and the staff,
I offer my deep gratitude to each and every committee member. And finally, a huge thank-you
goes to all of our sponsors and patrons. Your generosity and commitment to the House were
evident not only through your financial support, but also your attendance. We are fortunate to
have such loyal friends and supporters. And what’s a party without eager guests? We had 380
revelers adorned with red shoes and blinking pins sipping Ruby Sippers over Diamonds on Ice.
All in all, it was a magical night of celebrating 20 years during which 30,000 families have been
served. Thanks for your part in achieving this milestone!
The day before The Red Shoe Affair, there was another celebration of note. On Thursday,
September 29, Tom Ferry was honored as the second recipient of the Terry and Ben Smith
Spirit of Care Award. Over his 31-year tenure as the CEO/Administrator of the Nemours/Alfred
I. duPont Hospital for Children, Tom was instrumental in the founding of the Ronald McDonald
House of Delaware and in its subsequent growth. Guests offered memories of Tom’s leadership
in the visioning and creation of a House and his service as Treasurer on the first Board. When the
House expansion became needed, Tom stepped up again and co-chaired the capital campaign
in 2003-2005. Throughout the House’s 20 years, the support from the Hospital expanded under
Tom’s guidance. With Terry and Ben Smith in attendance, it was an honor to recognize Tom’s
dedication to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware with the Terry and Ben Smith Spirit of
Care Award.
As we step into the first months of our third decade, I thank you, again, for being with us every
step of the way over the last 20 years. Looking ahead, what steps will you take to get us to the
next 20 years?
With gratitude,
Anne
It’s beginning to look like the Holidays around the Ronald
McDonald House of Delaware and we are planning one of
the best holiday lighting ceremonies for December 15th.
Share A Night, our largest fundraiser, focuses on the true
meaning of the holiday season - sharing and compassion for
families in need - at the Ronald McDonald House, a “home
away from home” for families of seriously or chronically ill or
injured children who are being treated at area hospitals.
Families that stay at our House are asked to contribute $15
dollars a night, however, the actual cost of operating a guest
room per night is $65. In the face of mounting medical bills
and other associated financial pressures, many families cannot
afford even this small amount. It is your contribution through
Share A Night that allows us to keep our requested donation
at $15 a night and provide lodging for families in need.
Here’s how Share A Night works. For each $15 contributed
by an individual, family, organization, school or business,
one holiday light is added to the outside of our House and
property. Then, to commemorate the efforts of all those
contributors, a lighting ceremony is held to symbolize the
generosity and compassion of everyone involved where each
donor can see a light, an outward, visible symbol of their
generosity.
“Share A Night is an important part of our year end fund
raising efforts,” said Pam Cornforth, Executive Director. “On
behalf of the families we serve I would like to thank the
community and benefactors in making a difference in the
lives of seriously ill children.”
Once again this year, Richard and Linda Faucher and their
children of Bear, Delaware, who are well-known for holiday
house lights display, will be hanging the lights and decorating
our House.
Schools and organizations are encouraged to organize
projects to contribute “lights” for the House. There are a
variety of sponsorship packages for businesses, civic groups
and individuals that would like to be involved with Share
A Night, from a $5,000 Gift of Love to a $250 Gift of Hope.
Call Dawn Brooks, Special Events Coordinator at the Ronald
McDonald House, at 302-428-5330 for more information.
Individuals who contribute to Share A Night may do so as
a memorial or tribute gift for a special occasion, such as a
Christmas remembrance in a friend or loved one’s name.
The tradition continues as we prepare for the annual Lighting
Ceremony and party on Thursday, December 15th, 6:00 -
7:00 p.m. with light refreshments. Sponsors include: RMHC
Philadelphia Region, Bank of America, Chase, Corporation
Service Company, HSBC, Lyons Companies, Nemours/Alfred
I. duPont Hospital for Children, Patterson-Woods Associates
and Terry & Ben Smith.
In-kind sponsors include: Delaware McDonald’s Owner/
Operators, WJBR 99.5 FM, Rich Faucher & family and Cupcake
Heaven.
For more information on how you, your group or business
can become involved, call 302-428-5330 or complete the
form and mail it to the House at the address listed.
The Red Shoe Affair
20th Anniversary Celebration
Raises over $120,000 for the House
Over 350 guests celebrated 20 years of serving families at the Ronald McDonald
House of Delaware. As guests entered the beautifully decorated lobby of
Barclays they were greeted with champagne compliments of Kreston Wine and
Spirits and United Distributors of Delaware. Music by John Pollard played in the
background as guests posed for their commemorative photo provided by Foschi
Photography. Once upstairs, guests enjoyed fabulous food provided by Eurest
Dining Services and Chef Tara Charpentier. EBE “Paris” kept the guests on their
feet all night dancing to great music while Tim Hall from Aladdin Productions
entertained the guests with his illusion and magic. Guests purchased Ronald
McDonald House blinking light pins and participated in our Heads ‘N Tails
game where Mike Fulmer won an iPad 2. Paul Cohen, co-owner of Continental
Jewelers presided over the Diamonds on Ice fundraiser and three lucky winners
won half carat diamonds donated by Continental Jewelers.
The Red Shoe Affair would not have been successful without the wonderful
volunteers and committee members who worked tirelessly on the event.
What’s Happening at the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms
The House welcomed Ashley Berntgen this
September to the role of Community and
Family Room Coordinator. Ashley is a Public
Ally and will be in her role through June 2012.
In her role, Ashley will work with volunteers in
the Ronald McDonald Family Room programs
at Christiana Care, Nemours/Alfred I. duPont
Hospital for Children, and Bayhealth Medical
Center at Kent General Hospital in Dover.
Ashley will also work with volunteers from the
community to help raise awareness and collect
much-needed items to help make the Family
Room program a welcoming environment for
families. Ashley will continue to expand our
On-the-Go Meal Kit program started in 2010
to provide meals to families struggling with
finding nutritious and economical sources
of food while spending time at the hospital
during their child’s treatment. In addition
to On-the-Go Meal Kits, we are looking for
community volunteers that can also provide
Activity Bags for parents and children to enjoy
while spending long days at the hospital
and toiletry kits that can be distributed to
families using shower areas in the Ronald
McDonald Family Room/Family Resource
Center at duPont Hospital and Bayhealth.
To learn more about how volunteers can
help to support the Ronald McDonald Family
Room Program, please contact Ashley at
is building a new five-story
expansion adjacent to the
existing Hospital facility to better
meet the needs of children and
their families. A Sky Breaking
event marked the ceremonial
beginning of the project on
August 23, 2011 with the new
building opening to patients
in early 2014. Many RMHD
Staff and Board members
were among the 800 guests at
the Sky Breaking, kicking off
phase I of the $260 million hospital expansion. The multi-year project aims to create a health
care environment that supports a patient and family centered journey and promotes healing
and wellness, including these specific project components.
• The expanded Hospital will have single, family-centered, technologically advanced patient
rooms with sleeping accommodations and amenities for families, as well as 8-bed “nursing
neighborhoods” to maximize patient contact with staff—a hospital for the 21st century.
• A new 44-bed Emergency Department, to include Fast Track and observation units, will
nearly double current treatment capacity and support the Hospital as the state’s only Pediatric
Trauma Center.
• To care for the sickest children, a new and expanded Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, including
an 8-bed stepdown unit for patients on ventilators, will have larger private rooms to
accommodate bedside technologies and space for families to stay with their child 24/7.
• A centralized rooftop helipad will provide easy access to operating rooms, inpatient beds
and the Emergency Department.
• Family-centered services, spaces such as family lounges, “pocket parks” and other amenities
will contribute to comfort and healing.
• A soaring atrium entrance will provide easy access to all services and create a “Main Street”
to make wayfinding easy for families.
• Free underground parking will provide 188 covered spaces in addition to complimentary
valet parking.
• A sustainable building design by FKP Architects that will achieve excellence in energy
efficiency and be environmentally friendly.
“We are committed to providing the highest-quality care for our children. With this
expansion we have the opportunity to create an environment that enhances patient care,
supports families, provides the latest in technology and supports collaboration and
communication: the true 21st-century model of pediatric health care,” remarked Dr. Kevin B.
Churchwell, CEO of the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.
Pam Cornforth, Ronald McDonald House Executive Director, is a member of the
Operations Sub-Committee of the Expansion Project Steering Committee at
NAIDHC. In this role, Pam and the workgroup are looking at current care processes
to find opportunities for improvement and plan for ideal service experiences in the expanded
facility. She is also contributing valuable expertise regarding the creation of a continuum of familyfriendly
spaces in the new expansion ranging from the child’s room to a pocket park on the
care unit to the Family Resource Center/RMHD Family Room within the Hospital to the Ronald
McDonald House across the street. In addition to Pam’s involvement in the project planning,
presentations have been made by Hospital leaders to the RMHD Board of Directors, Staff and
both Advisory Councils during which dialogue and exchange has occurred underscoring the
valued partnership between the House and the Hospital. Continued updates on the expansion
project will be provided using all communication channels. Questions about the project can be
directed to RMHD Board Chair, Anne Wright at awright@nemours.org.
Red Robin
The Third Annual Red Robin
Rocks the House Funfest
was held at the Brandywine
Town Center on Sunday,
August 14th. The torrential
rain forced the cancellation
of the Antique and Classic
Car Show but over $8,000
was raised for the House
through children’s activities,
manicures and hair braids
by La Petite Salon, live
entertainment and Battle of
the Bands plus live performances from School of Rock, bell
ringers and a silent auction. Red Robin also donated a portion
of all sales from the day to the House.
A special thank you to Craig Colby and Dave Tiberi,
Co-Chairs and the hard working committee including
Carla Bobka, Greg Bobka, Dan Coates, Michael Connelly,
John Dowling, Dot Edwards, Carol Forsythe, Ruth Fulmer,
Michael Graves, Christine Hetland, Kory Hitchens, Stephanie
Marchak, Chris Marchak, Heather Osborne, John Presley,
Erin Reynolds and Chip Romano for their support of this
great event and all the local businesses that contributed to
the auction and event activities.
Volunteer Spotlight
The fall has been a very busy and productive time for
volunteers at the House! The United Way Days of Caring,
schools groups promoting volunteer service to their
students, churches and many community groups are all
eager and willing to give service to the House. The fall also
brought a time to celebrate volunteerism with the news that
Michael Waite, Past President of the Board and Co-Chair
of the Red Shoe Affair, received a Governor’s Award for
Outstanding Volunteer Service. The award is well-deserved
honor recognizing Michael’s 15 years of volunteer service
to the House. If you would be interested in learning more
about the House’s Volunteer needs, please contact Sara at
302-428-5340 or at s.funaiock@rmhde.org.
The House has also recently added a new online feature
to allow for more efficient tracking of volunteer schedules.
Dr. Allen Tucker, a retired Computer Science Professor from
Maine whose family utilized a Ronald McDonald House years
ago, created Homebase a web-based volunteer scheduling
program for the Ronald McDonald House in Maine. We are
grateful for Dr. Tucker for sharing his talents and skills with
our House to help us evolve our program and enable us to
align volunteer needs with House needs.
Last summer 45 teens helped to make the House a welcoming
environment to families calling the House a “home away
from home” during the summer months. Teens 16 years of
age and older can help with trained positions during the
school year if they are able to commit to at least six hours of
service per month for a season or 4 month period of time.
Teens, 15 years and older, not able to make an ongoing
volunteer commitment can also help with special events,
organize a Wish List, Pop Tab, or Koins for Kids Drive in
school, church, their neighborhoods or sports team to earn
service hours and help the House. Baking, coordinating a
Family Activity Evening or organizing and assembling an
On-the-Go Meal Kit activity are also great ways for teens
to get involved. Applications and interviews
for the 2012 summer volunteer program will
begin in January. To learn
more, contact Sara Funaiock,
Volunteer Manager, at
302-428-5340 or at
Volunteers like Barbara Brown and
Wayne Kursh have completed their
estate planning and have named
the Ronald McDonald House of
Delaware the recipient of a planned
gift. Barbara has been involved with
the House from the beginning. She
served on the House’s first Board of
Directors in 1986 and oversaw the
House’s construction as a member
of the Building and Operations
committee. In 1989, Barbara started
the House’s annual 5K Run/Walk
which continues today. Wayne and
Barbara and Wayne said, “By naming
the House as a recipient of a planned
gift we believe we are helping in a
small way to ensure that the Ronald
McDonald House continues for future
generations providing families with
sick children a ‘home away from
home.’”
We thank Barbara and Wayne for
their commitment to advancing the
mission of the Ronald McDonald
House and for their legacy gift to
the House. For more information about
Young Professionals
Support the House
Are you a young professional that is
interested in becoming involved OR
becoming more involved with the
House? The Young Friends group
is looking to expand our small, but
active group of volunteers. Our
mission is to serve as ambassadors
of the House by creating awareness
in our local communities, support
fundraising events of the House and
organizing our own events. It is a fun
way to support the House and meet
new people.
If you are interested or would
like more information, please
contact Tara Levesque at
tara.levesque@bankofamerica.com
or 302-893-3976.
Adopt a Room
The Ronald McDonald House of
Delaware only asks for a $15 a night
donation per room so imagine what
a donation of $5,000 can do to
help families who cannot afford to
pay? Please join us in the Adopt a
Room program which helps defray
the cost to operate a guest room
at the House. You too can make a
difference in a families’ life – contact
