UV – Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the non–ioniz<strong>in</strong>g part of the electromagnetic spectrum and ranges<br />

between 100 nm and 400 nm.<br />

UVA – is UV radiation from 315 nm to 400 nm.<br />

UVB – is UV radiation from 280 to 315 nm.<br />

UVC – is UV radiation from 100 nm to 280 nm.<br />

Short wave irradiance – is the UV wavelength region from 250 to 320 nm.<br />

Long wave irradiance – is the UV wavelength region from 320 to 400 nm.<br />

Effective irradiance – is a quantity of electromagnetic radiation which is weighted accord<strong>in</strong>g to a<br />

specified action spectrum.<br />

Action spectrum – is the rate of a physiological activity plotted aga<strong>in</strong>st wavelength. It shows which<br />

wavelength is most effective to <strong>in</strong>duce a specific reaction.<br />

ACGIH - is the American Conference on Governmental Industrial Hygienists. The ACGIH-weight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

function is a reference action spectrum for UV-<strong>in</strong>duced acute erythema and photokeratitis <strong>in</strong> humans<br />

which is valid for the wavelength range 200-315 nm (38), i.e. UVC and UVB.<br />

CIE – is the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage. The CIE-action spectrum is a reference action<br />

spectrum for UV <strong>in</strong>duced erythema <strong>in</strong> Caucasian human sk<strong>in</strong> (39) valid for the UV region from 250 to<br />

400 nm.<br />

UV <strong>in</strong>dex (UVI) – is the total CIE-weighted irradiance multiplied with 40 m²/W (42).<br />

UV irradiance – is the power of UV radiation onto a unit surface area, given <strong>in</strong> W/m².<br />

UV dose – is the energy of UV radiation a person receives per unit area and over the time of exposure,<br />

given <strong>in</strong> J/m².<br />
