Welcome to the 3 rd Underground Cinema Film Festival. A champion of
emerging filmmakers, Underground Cinema has the belief that no matter what the
film’s budget or the director’s vision it’s the filmmakers passion that drives a film.
From underground cult films to more traditional family fare, our international film
festival is an incredibly diverse program, offering something for film fans of all ages
This year we are delighted to welcome a number of special guests to our festival, including Jack Sargeant
from Revelations Film Festival in Australia, and writers/directors/producers Ferdia MacAnna, Vinny Murphy,
Colin Bateman, Ciaran Creagh and Bernard McLaverty. Their contributions to our festival not only enhance
our annual event but also ensures that the Underground Cinema Film Festival continues to fulfill its various
educational initiatives throughout the festival week.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for 2012. We are delighted to have onboard
with us this year Radio Nova, Dublin Gazette Newspapers, The Royal Marine Hotel, The Irish Film Board, Dun
Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and Yelp without whose support this festival would be impossible to
achieve.
Funding is still an enormous problem for Underground Cinema and although we receive funding and
sponsorship in kind from the above named sponsors, the festival still remains relatively self funded. I would
call on the Arts Council of Ireland to review our festival once more and consider it for funding in 2013. With
funding and support there is no limit as to what we can achieve.
All that is left for me to say is to enjoy yourselves and I look forward to meeting you all over the next four
days of the festival
Is mise le meas
exploring the issues behind the mysteries that have baffled Dracula
scholars and fans since the book’s publication in 1897.
Directly after Dacre’s presentation, our final horror
film for the day will be the 20th Anniversary
screening of Bram Stokers 'Dracula' .
Since Bram Stoker first brought the tale of Dracula
to life in 1897, the story has been told and retold
countless times on screen. Directors such as F.W.
Murnau, Tod Browning, Terrence Fisher and John
Badham have all offered up different versions of
this story, while actors as diverse as Max Schreck,
Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Frank Langella
have all portrayed the blood sucking count. By
1992, it seemed that this tale had been told so
many times that there was nothing left to say.
However, that is the year that the legendary director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, Francis Ford
Coppola, presents us with a flamboyant new look at Dracula. Over one hundred years after Stoker first
penned the novel, Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula is the most faithful film adaptation of the book. It is an
engaging and visually exhilarating exercise in screen horror.
"Ambition, intelligence, terrific momentum and genuine creativity" - The Irish Times
After the screening of Dracula the PaperDolls will display some their most incredible acrobatic talents
IN THE BEGINNING...
It all started when four young ladies gathered to discuss a mutual problem: they wanted to fly but had nowhere to
do it in their city. Their driving passion was aerial – performing with airborne circus equipment like trapeze, hoop,
rope and silks. After years of ad-hoc aerial training they had run out of patience and so began a search for a space
to develop their aerial craft. As fate would have it, they soon found their performance home - the Complex, a citycenter
venue that was the answer to their prayers. From vastly diverse backgrounds, the Dolls found the creative
chemistry between them urgently needed an outlet. They had met each other for a reason, to realise their
childhood imaginings of wild adventures, mystifying spectacles and immensely invigorating happenings.
IN THE FUTURE...
PaperDolls are at a very interesting juncture in their growth as a new company. Having only formed in January
2011 and recently completed full-time aerial and acrobatics training at Belfast Circus School, they have jumped
head first into their creative work and have received just as much back as a result. Their intention is to go on
exactly as how they started, doing what they want and seeing what can come about when you throw a group of
intense, creative, physical, young, hungry people into a room and give them a platform from which to work.
PaperDolls are Emily Aoibheann, Elaine McCague and Karen Anderson.
