Free Workshops Colin Bateman– Workshop will take place on Sunday September 16 th in the Dargan Suite at 2pm Colin Bateman has been producing novels since his debut, Divorcing Jack in 1994. Divorcing Jack won a Betty Trask Award in the same year and was adapted into a 1998 film starring David Thewlis. Several of Bateman's novels featured the semi-autobiographical Belfast journalist, Dan Starkey. His book Murphy's Law was adapted from the BBC television series Murphy's Law (2001–2007), featuring James Nesbitt. Bateman explains on his website that "Murphy`s Law was written specifically for James Nesbitt, a local actor who became a big TV star through Cold Feet. The ninety minute pilot for Murphy's Law on BBC 1 was seen by more than seven million people, and led to three TV series, on which I was the chief writer.” Has just completed the 8 part series "SCUP", Which he wrote in English but has been translated into Irish. It is in production by Sterling Films & BBC Northern Ireland. His children's book Titanic 2020 has been shortlisted for the 2008 Salford Children's Book Award. Much of his work is produced under the name "Bateman" (rather than his full name); his 2007 novel I Predict a Riot bears (among others) the dedication: "For my Christian name, gone but not forgotten". Colin’s Workshop will be entitled ‘Writing for the Screen’. Bernard McLaverty – Workshop will take place on Sunday September 16 th in the Dargan Suite at 4pm Bernard MacLaverty was born in Belfast (14.9.42) and lived there until 1975 when he moved to Scotland with his wife, Madeline, and four children. He has been a Medical Laboratory Technician, a mature student, a teacher of English and, for two years in the mid eighties, Writer-in- Residence at the University of Aberdeen. After living for a time in Edinburgh and the Isle of Islay he now lives in Glasgow. He is a member of Aosdana in Ireland and is Visiting Writer/Professor at the University of Strathclyde. Currently he is employed as a teacher of creative writing on a postgraduate course in prose fiction run by the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies at the University of Aberdeen. He has published five collections of short stories and four novels. He has written versions of his fiction for other media - radio plays, television plays, screenplays. Recently he wrote and directed a short film 'Bye-Child‘. Bernard’s screenplays include 'Bye Child', 'Lamb' and 'Cal'. We are delighted to welcome Bernard to our festival to speak about his writing over the last few decades. Special Guest – Jack Sargeant Program Director for Revelation Film Festival Australia As an author Jack Sargeant’s work has been described as "dangerously inspirational" by Six Degrees magazine, his numerous books on cinema include Deathtripping: The Extreme Underground, Naked Lens: Beat Cinema (like Deathtripping now in its third English language edition) and Cinema Contra Cinema. He is co-editor with Chris Barber of No Focus: Punk on Film and with Stephanie Watson of Lost Highways: An Illustrated History of the Road Movie. In addition he has written on underground and cult film, sonic art / alternative music and subcultures for numerous books and anthologies including From The Arthouse To The Grindhouse and Underground USA, amongst others. Jack has written introductions for books by Lydia Lunch, Romain Slocombe, and Joe Coleman. The author of the acclaimed book on underground art Suture, he has also edited several volumes of true crime writing. He writes a regular column for FilmInk, and has written articles for The Wire, Xochi 23, Fortean Times, World Art, Real Time, Metro, Headpress and many other publications. His writings have also appeared in the booklets accompanying numerous DVDs in the USA and UK, including the BFI release of Jeff Keen’s films and the Industrial Records Throbbing Gristle DVD box set. In addition to writing, Sargeant has lectured on underground film and culture, beat culture, William Burroughs and many other topics across the world. He has curated numerous film, performance and fine art events, and is currently program director for the Revelation Film Festival in Western Australia. We are delighted to welcome Jack from Australia to bring us a unique view and insight into the world of Underground Cinema. Jack’s program will take place in the Dargan Suite on Friday September 14 th from 12pm to 1145pm .
