Christmas at Runnymede Christmas at Runnymede
The following day, a trip to Windsor Castle takes us on a private ‘behind the
scenes’ tour of the Great Kitchen and State Apartments. The Great Kitchen has
remained in constant use for nearly 750 years and during our visit we will see this
and parts of the Castle not included in public tours. In the afternoon we have a
recital by the Quadrifidus String Quartet, a circle of highly regarded orchestral
and chamber musicians, playing classical music to suit all tastes. The concert starts
with Smetana’s String Quartet No.1 ‘From my Life’. After the interval the
programme includes popular pieces from Louiguy, Leroy Anderson, Gounod,
Frank Bridge, Pachabel, Cole Porter and Gershwin
On the last morning we are pleased present our guest speaker Doug Parker, a
comedian from the Midlands. Doug was the warm up artist for the Michael
Parkinson Show for many years. He is a very
funny man who tells respectable jokes
enjoyed by everyone, even people who
don’t normally like comedians and he has
gained a reputation as a first class speaker.
This morning his talk reveals his amusing
view of life itself. If you have a sense of
humour then you will enjoy listening to Doug
who can say things to make you chuckle on
just about every topic.

The Great Kitchen at Windsor Castle
Day 1 – Monday 24th December
The holiday starts at the Runnymede
Hotel from 2.30pm onwards. You
will be greeted by tour managers,
Julia Stitt and Shirley Arber, who will
be available for you throughout
your holiday. Refreshments will be
served upon arrival followed by free
time to socialise. Later, the Cabaret
Swing Trio presents ‘Let Yourself Go’
before our waiter-served three-course Christmas Eve Dinner. Tonight and every
night of your Christmas break, dinner will be served with two glasses of house
wine or soft drinks. Those wishing to go to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle
for the Christmas Eve midnight service will be taken by coach and mulled wine
and mince pies will be served upon return.
Day 2 – Tuesday 25th December
Runnymede Hotel
Christmas Day begins with a full English breakfast followed by free time to stroll
by the river, sample the hotel’s swimming pool and leisure facilities or relax in
Cultural Breaks’ exclusive games room. Later in the morning, ‘The Time Traveller’,
a comic opera will be performed in the Riverside Suite with Bryan Kesselman
(Baritone), Philip Barnett (Baritone) and Alexandra McPhee (Soprano). Following
‘The Time Traveller’, the show continues with a medley of your favourite songs
from Gilbert & Sullivan operas. The traditional four-course Christmas Lunch is the
high spot of the day. It includes two glasses of wine or soft drinks and coffee or
tea. Relax afterwards, watching the Queen’s
Christmas Day speech and enjoying the company
of friends. Julia and Shirley are the Quizmasters
as an entertaining quiz provides fun and
interaction in the afternoon. After a buffet supper
with wine and tea or coffee, classic movies will be
shown in our entertainment suite.

Day 3 – Wednesday 26th December

Enjoy a leisurely Boxing Day breakfast and an
unhurried morning. Leading up to lunchtime we are
pleased to present guest speaker Jane Tapley with an
informative and entertaining talk about the history of
pantomime. Following a light lunch we depart for
the Theatre Royal Windsor to see ‘Jack and the
Beanstalk’. After dinner at the hotel, classic movies
will be shown in our entertainment suite.
Day 4 – Thursday 27th December
For those wanting a change of
surroundings and some gentle
exercise, we have an outing this
morning. Members wishing to opt out
can enjoy a morning at leisure in the
hotel, relaxing and enjoying its
facilities. We have a private ‘behind
the scenes’ tour of life in the Great
Kitchen and State Apartments at
Windsor Castle. After lunch at the hotel enjoy free time relaxing before the
Quadrificus String Quartet present a classical music concert in our exclusive suite.
Day 5 – Friday December 28th
String Quartet
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast then spend the last morning of the Christmas holiday
enjoying the hotel facilities and the surroundings with friends. Before our farewell
lunch we meet our guest speaker, Doug Parker in our entertainment suite to listen
to him speak about his very amusing view on life. Doug was immensely popular
with Cultural Breaks Members at his last talk and we look forward to having him
back. The two-course Farewell Lunch that follows brings your Christmas holiday
to an end.

On Christmas Eve the
Swing Cabaret Trio
present ‘Let Yourself
Go’ - the best from
Cole Porter, George
Gershwin Irving Berlin,
Rodgers and Hart and
many others. The Trio
includes Tony Jacobs,
formerly male vocalist with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Jim Barry, pianist from
the BBC Radio Big Band and on saxophone and clarinet, Sue Greenway from the
RAF Squadronnaires and currently touring with the musical ‘Chicago’.
Swing Caberat Trio
Christmas Day features ‘The Time Traveller’ a one act comic opera by Bryan
Kesselman and Philip Barnett. Written as a tribute to Gilbert & Sullivan, this
production premiered at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival at Buxton this
year and has been very well received. Joining them in the cast is talented young
soprano, Alexandra McPhee.
Our guest speaker on Boxing Day is Jane Tapley, who works with actors, writers
and directors as special events organiser at the Theatre Royal Bath. She is also
an author, researcher, lecturer, home economist and theatrical landlady.
Today Jane presents ‘Oh Yes It Is!’ a lively and amusing look at the history of
Pantomime from ancient
to modern times. In the
afternoon we visit The
Theatre Royal Windsor
to watch ‘Jack and
the Beanstalk’ from
the Royal Stalls. The
pantomime stars Steven
Blakeley as Dame Trott
and Kevin Cruise as
Simple Simon.
