What did I gain from AFS (Advanced Farming Solutions)?
Sam Jones, Farmer from Redditch in Worcestershire, has been using Precision
Farming Solutions for the past few years and has noticed cleared improvements:
accuracy and optimisation of his grassland operations, comfort on the cab, time
and money savings.

‘I’d been wondering whether to upgrade our light bar to an
automatic steering system for some time. I was wondering
whether I’d get the return on my investment on such a
‘luxury’ on my mixed farm,’ says Sam Jones, Farmer from
Redditch in Worcestershire.
‘I’ve spent the last few years focused on improving the
sheep flock and improving my lambing percentages and
ensuring I’m getting
the maximum return
from my sheep flock. I
hadn’t really looked at
the machinery aspect
of the business, but
I knew I had to do
something to improve
the efficiency. I
looked at a number of
systems and choose
the EZ-Pilot system
because it made
sense from a fitting
perspective, that
was so easy and an
operational perspective again that was easy to understand
and can be moved into different tractors. One screen
covers three tractors.
I wanted to improve the accuracy of my grassland
operations; rolling, mowing, turning and rowing up. During
the trial period when we took various measurements I
was amazed at how inaccurate I was, even though it
didn’t look much at the time. But a small saving on each
operation starts to add up. The largest savings was with
fertiliser before and after the cut of haylage, it was not
only the savings but accuracy of application which makes a
difference.
“The benefits were through the haylage process, from fertiliser
application, to rolling, mowing, turning and rowing up and
then the second application of nitrogen.”
Getting the mowing right made the rest of the operations
much easier and then with rowing up, baling was easier.
Whilst the rows were pretty straight beforehand until they
are properly straight you don’t appreciate how wavy they
were!
“The biggest benefit was for me and the comfort in the cab.”
You never realise how much you are concentrating even on
the most mundane tasks, and the steering system makes a
huge difference as I can work longer hours when I have to
which is almost unquantifiable in difficult years.
I’ve now started to use the system on our small arable
operation and again the ease of operation is huge. It is
well known that livestock farmers don’t really make expert
tractor drivers, and I’m no exception. But after a long day
on the tractor, as well as doing all the other jobs, you don’t
feel mentally exhausted.
I’ve had my fields EC scanned for soil texture variation and
P, K and pH sampled with Agrii and that has shown where
the nutrient variation is across the farm, so I’ve started
to put the soil indices right which will hopefully have an
impact on lamb growth and ewe performance.
“I was looking to ensure that I was optimising every
kilogramme of fertiliser on the field.”
Placement of the fertiliser was important to avoid over
and underlaps, so looking at steering was the next logical
step for us. Basically if I didn’t measure what I was doing
then I couldn’t manage it and that included the machinery
operations.
“The one surprise I had was when I measured the width of
the mower it wasn’t as wide as I thought it was, so paying
attention to the smallest detail is important. I’m more than
happy!”
The system is
expensive, there’s
no doubt about that
and it was a tough
decision on whether
to buy it or not, but
with the decision
made, I’m glad I have. The investment is £1000 per year
for 6 years and will it pay back over that time, I really think
it will when everything is added together. No single saving
pays for the system but adding them all together and with
the stress reduction on me I’m very glad I have made the
investment.’
And not having your arable neighbours looking over the
hedges making fun of your ‘ wavy lines’- priceless!!

The farm is in Redditch, Worcestershire. 600 acres including 150 acres of cereals, 1300 breeding ewes and a number of diversification
projects including a solar panel operation and a mobile bar business.
Fertiliser cost savings
Accurate application of fertiliser is vital both before the grass
is cut and after to establish regrowth. Reducing both over and
underlap reduces wastage and maximises grass growth.
Whilst difficult to quantify exactly, we made an assumption that
approx. 10kg of fertiliser was saved per acre through reduction in
overlapping and accurate placement of fertiliser as almost 1 bag
of fertiliser was saved across all fields after each application.
Across both applications 1500kg of fert was saved which equated
to £450.
Time savings
With improved accuracy, time savings were made in each field.
Whilst the savings are open to discussion and challenge the
following estimates were made compared to previous years:

Not a huge saving, but in difficult years every minute does make
a difference.
Operator comfort
There was no doubt that the operator worked in a much less
stressful environment. The ability to make and receive phone
calls frees up time at the beginning and end of the day and
doesn’t allow work to back up. The machine can also be
optimised to ensure maximum performance. A financial figure
can’t be put to the this aspect, it was a definite benefit of using
the assisted steering system.
Overall observation
• Livestock operators may not be as skilled in tractor driving
compared to arable drivers so the savings make be greater due
to the degree of improvement.
• Getting the grass mowed correctly at the start makes all the
remaining operations easier
• Straighter rowing up made it easier for the baler operator
• The ability to apply fertiliser where it is needed accurately is
very noticeable
• Steering system will benefit the arable operation as well, so as
a combined operation the system will provide value for money.
