The Valley Weekender SPORT Barefoot bowlers raise funds SOCIAL bowlers turned out in force on Sunday for an afternoon of fun and to raise money for the Laidley Hospital’s new Palliative Care Bed project. Organised as a “Race Day” theme, the event attracted some 60 participants to the Laidley Bowls Club’s greens. One team, sponsored by the Lockyer Hotel, attracted much attention in their snappy, race-going outfi ts. A feature of the day was the drawing of the major raffl e prize, a magnifi cent wooden storage chest created by Leo White. The winner was Jacqueline Oyston of Hatton Vale. Hospital Auxiliary president Cate Towner said she was delighted with the response to the fundraising activities and wanted to pass on her thanks to all who took part. “I especially want to thank Woolworths for their generous donation of 12 fruit trays to be used as raffl e prizes,” she said. Mrs Towner said Sunday’s event raised some $1500. Laidley Golf Club notes Wednesday was the women’s single stroke and the winner was Monie Lerch with 65 nett from Laurel Taylor 66 and June Blaney 67 nett. Old Boys’ golf day The recently re-formed Laidley Rugby League Old Boys Association is conducting a fund raising golf day on Sunday September 18 in conjunction with the Mulgowie Angels Softball Club. Old Boys’ spokesman Dan Flanagan said the main aim of both groups is to raise money to sponsor their respective junior sides and individuals, as well as helping out with their senior divisions. “The Angels are sending a team to the masters games and some of the funds will go towards paying for that event, whereas the Old Boys are hoping to be able to reimburse some junior representatives with their funds,” Mr Flanagan said. “We will also be handing over funds to the local Meals on Wheels committee.” The golf day will be a two-man ambrose competition, teeing off at 10.am with a shotgun start and played over 12 holes with everyone back in the clubhouse around 2.30.pm for presentations and various raffl es. Refreshments will be available on course all day and a barbeque lunch will be available on the way round.
