Laidley disaster plan takes shape
FOLLOWING criticism from some
business owners that there appeared
to be no plan in place as the disastrous
floods of January 11 took hold, a Laidley
flood action plan has been developed.
Senior Sergeant Jim McDonald, who is also a
Lockyer Valley Regional councillor, said the
development of such a plan was part of his charter
as a police officer, as well as coming within his
council portfolio.
“As a result of the meeting between members of
Laidley Better Business and council on Wednesday,
February 9, I decided to call another meeting to
review and improve the role of the community and
response agencies during the January floods,” he
said.
“Members of Laidley Better Business who attended that meeting
were all positive and constructive.
“The action plan includes articles such as distributing a flood
survival kit and a first-aid program. We also need to ensure there
is adequate sand and sandbags available and that a number of
accessible storage locations are identified.”
Senior Sergeant McDonald said the plan also considered options
for promoting early warning systems.
“The Laidley fire brigade siren will provide a wide local early
advice, and electronic media such as Facebook, email and radio
can also be utilised.
“Also, the business community will now be invited to participate
in the joint emergency services meetings we hold each month.
“We have to learn from previous events, and while we reflect
on the grief caused by this recent disaster, we now need to look
ahead to positive improvements in our response and preparedness
for future emergencies,” he said.
NEWS IN BRIEF
Forest Hill
BUSINESS as usual - all the businesses in the main street of Forest Hill
are up and running. Commonly referred to as “Eat Street” those serving
their delicacies want to assure people they are open for business after
supplies during the recent floods. People will be able to sift through the
items and choose what they need to re-supply themselves.
Glenore Grove
The folks at Glenore Grove suffered with the floods and extensive road
and bridge damage occurred which in turn impacted on small business.
Happily, all roads and bridges have been restored. Take care while
Laidley
The folks of Laidley are hard at it working on a plan to help to lessen
impact in the event of a huge flood event such as they have just experienced.
A working committee has been formed. It has had its first
range of talks and everyone is working together in an effort to ensure
the community that it will be better prepared should another major
flood occur.
Mulgowie
Simon and Cheree Emmerson recently took over the reins of the grand
old Mulgowie Pub only to be messed up by flood waters not long after.
Simon is happy to report that no one in Mulgowie suffered any major
structural damage (including the iconic bull ride arena), only mess and a
lot of damage from silt which has nearly all been cleared away.
The famous Mulga Bull Ride was cancelled due to the floods but is now
back on and happening on April 30.
The Duck has migrated... “ A good car may last you 10 years or more but a good cartoon will
THANKS to Trevor Salter, the Lockyer Valley is known for
not only its flooding but its sense of humour with people
from as far away as Rocklea actively tracking down stickers
(spotted on the back of vehicles), shirts and stubby coolers
featuring ‘the duck’.
The brain child of Kathy McLean and Ann Kirby of McLean Images,
Laidley, a series of T-shirts, bumper stickers and stubby holders are
now on sale within Laidley, Forest Hill, Gatton and Lowood.
“Local artist Trevor Salter has done the artwork for no charge and
McLeans are printing them at a much-reduced rate,” Ms Mitchell
said.
Born in Ramsgate, Kent, England Trevor emigrated with his family
in 1969 to Australia and has lived here ever since.
During his Bundamba school years he would constantly stretch the
boundaries with his unique ability to draw, often at the teachers
expense.
This ability and skill enabled him to work in the artistic industry
of screen printing where he quickly excelled, completing his trade
and also a diploma in freelance cartooning and illustration, He then
studied Media Arts and Animation.
Trevor has contributed his talents to many organisations including
government agencies such as Red Cross, Disability Services
Queensland, WR Black Resources and Life Line.
He has also produced artwork and illustrations for Aussie World,
Fisherman’s Wharf, Burke & Wills Roadhouse, illustrations for
Playtime Productions books, 10 skits for younger performers and
20 character recitals for younger performers.
Trevor draws single panel gags for a laugh and it seems that no
subject is taboo…he often finds humour in the most unexpected
situations and creates cartoons that make you laugh, smile, snigger,
stare, gawk, frown and enjoy.
last a lifetime,” he adds.
His work is continuously growing, finding its way into all kinds of
mediums.
In 2006 Trevor became an author and published a children’s book
called ‘Monsters Galore’, which has also been adapted to stage.
A second book ‘ More Monsters Galore’ was published a year later
and chances of a third in the series is probable this year. He resides
in Hatton Vale ,Queensland, where he continues to create artwork,
illustrations and cartoons.
Laidley Better Business - Anger surfaces at meeting
A MEETING of Laidley Better Business (LBB) members and
Lockyer Valley Regional councillors on Wednesday night sought
answers to a number of issues arising from the January 11 floods.
Police Inspector Rob Graham, a police and community liaison
officer, told the gathering he had been located to the Lockyer Valley
Region to assist the mayor, residents and business houses to get
back on their feet.
“90 percent of businesses in Laidley were affected by the recent
flood, Inspector Graham said. “We, along with the Queensland
Reconstruction Authority, are here for the long haul.”
Despite the reassuring words from Inspector Graham and Mayor
Steve Jones, feelings that Laidley had been abandoned during the
crisis were expressed by several business people.
One operator said, even though her premises were not directly
affected, she was also suffering through lack of income, and no
grants were available to assist her cause.
Cr Jones acknowledged her plight, adding that transport operators
in the district were now putting off staff because of the absence of
produce.
“The impact is affecting all of us, it is all inter-mingled,” he said.
“All businesses, including council, are going to suffer for the next six
to nine months. We’ve now reached the flood’s economic factor.”
The major complaint, that councillors and police were invisible
during the floods and in the immediate aftermath, were answered
in the fact that it was impossible to reach Forest Hill and Laidley
by road.
Shop owners were also critical of the fact that sandbags were
unavailable and there appeared to be no plan of action.
Confirming that there was a plan, Cr Jones admitted there was a deal
of confusion as events unfolded.
“When Grantham occurred, the plan went into action,” he said.
“However, you can have all the plans in the world, but if there is no
one on the spot to implement them, they won’t work. In this case,
with every town affected, we had to prioritise our resources.”
Cr Jones said, as the Laidley council depot became inaccessible
during the flood, a building in the centre of town was needed where
sand and sandbags could be stored and made readily available.
Senior Sergeant Jim McDonald, who is also a regional councillor,
proposed a meeting with concerned LBB members on Thursday
(February 10) to hold a debriefing and begin formulating a local
action plan.
As anger began to surface, one member said something as simple as
a phone call from a councillor offering verbal support would have
eased the situation.
Another member added that council’s apparent lack of concern for
Laidley even extended to the fact that the Christmas decorations
were still strung across the main street.
Real estate principal Ray Bachmann fired a parting shot as discussion
continued on the absence of councillors during the crisis.
“There’s a local government election next year,” he said. “I’ll bet
we’ll see plenty of councillors on the streets of Laidley then.”
Laidley picking up the pieces
WITH the disastrous floods now becoming an unpleasant,
month-old memory, business owners in Laidley’s CBD are well
on the way to picking up the pieces and getting back to work.
Local florist Rachel Waterhouse said 80 percent of her stock, as
well as fittings and fixtures were lost or destroyed when waisthigh
water entered her Patrick Street premises on January 11.
“Although the insurance claim is still pending, we have a positive
outlook on the whole thing,” she said. “I’ve had the backing of
my family, and the community support has been unbelievable.
“With Valentine’s Day coming up, we made a real effort to be
open and operating, even though I had to re-order all the items,
including chocolates and ribbons lost in the flood.”
Ms Waterhouse said Valentine’s Day was her busiest time of the
year, and she did not want to disappoint her loyal customers.
Further along the street, Gary McNeish of Ramnet, Laidley’s
Internet and computer centre, displayed the same attitude.
Mr McNeish said, since nearly a metre of water swept through
his shop, friends and customers had worked tirelessly to get his
business back on its feet.
College buses currently travel between Fernvale, Blacksoil and Walloon through
to the surrounding areas of Gatton and the Lockyer Valley with a potential to extend
further. Any families who wish to learn about the holistic education we offer, please
book your tour of Faith Lutheran College today.
5
“I had a double whammy as water also went through our house,”
he said. “I’m grateful to everyone who helped me, especially the
council workers and the fireies who hosed out the shop and my
shed at home.
“There is still a bit to be done at the shop, and I’m still waiting on
the insurance company to come good, but we’re up and running
and open for business.”
Gary McNeish has his computer centre open again for business
RSL sub-branch annual meeting
AT Friday’s (February 11) annual meeting of the Laidley RSL
Sub-branch, president Mike Nowlan reflected on a year he
described as “full of activity and full of satisfaction”.
Mr Nowlan said sub-branch membership had now reached 86,
which he believed was the highest it had ever been.
“The big news from last year has been gaining a DVA grant of
$50,000 to purchase a printer and to air-condition our rooms,”
he said.
Mr Nowlan welcomed two new members to the executive
committee, secretary Lindy Barton and assistant secretary
Kaelene Matts.
During the meeting, donations were made to each of the three
cadet units and to Legacy.
Moreton District president Adrian Shepley paid a compliment to
the way in which the Laidley Sub-branch had raised its profile
within the community.
“I’m proud of the RSL in general, but I’m particularly proud of
Laidley as this is my home sub-branch,” he said.
Mr Shepley presented outstanding achievement awards to Delma
Tessmer and John Futcher in recognition of their work for the
local organisation.
Local state member Ian Rickuss congratulated Mr Nowlan,
saying he was pleased to see the sub-branch progressing so well
DOCTOR from Sunshine Coast
helps the Lockyer Valley
Sunshine Coast specialist, Doctor Chris Graves gave up his time
to assist the communities of Laidley & Forest Hill after the floods
recently.
Along with his wife Diane and Lockyer Valley Aboriginal Elder
Liaison Officer, Therese Webster, they spent Saturday in Laidley
and Sunday at Forest Hill doing medical house calls, checking
on the community and volunteers looking for folk who required
medical attention, scripts or just a friendly face for a chat.
He brought with him medication, dressings, bandages, antibiotics,
creams and tetanus injections. Diane handed out fruit, milk and
bread. They also donated toys and children’s clothes.
They were concerned for the community and focussed on its elderly
members and also did
medical checks and
gave advice to the many
volunteers hard at work
in both towns.
The medical supplies
where kindly donated
by staff from Nambour
Hospital.
Pictured is Ms Webster
with Dr Graves. She
said “ I would like to
offer them our heartfelt
thanks along with
the staff of Nambour
Hospital, for their
kindness and support
from our community.”
Thanks
for
shopping
locally
Laidley Better Business had the first of their ‘bounce back’
meetings on Wednesday night.
“The business community in Laidley would like to thank everyone
for shopping locally in the past weeks. This is the best way for
Laidley to bounce back from this disaster,” said Secretary, Anna
Ratcliffe. “By shopping in your own town, the money stays
here and helps all the businesses keep their levels of service and
products to the highest standard and creates jobs for our kids.”
“Laidley Better Business would also like to thank everyone
who helped with the clean up, their contribution was greatly
appreciated.
“The Chinese, whose New Year we have just celebrated, believe
this is the Year of the Rabbit. According to their philosophy, the
coming year offers to be a mixed bag. The Rabbit is prosperous
and, as everyone knows, breeds prolifically. To the Chinese
this symbolises a year not only for immediate family, but also
for extended family, friends, co-workers and associates pulling
together for the common good.
“We think this has already happened for many people throughout
the area.
“The Rabbit represents abundance and new growth tempered
with caution. This, we hope, is how our precious valley will grow
throughout this year. It is a time to seek simple harmony and enjoy
a new spirit of co-operation.” she concluded.
Cricket
Glenore Grove
The Glenore Grove Cricket is on the road to recovery, their fences
were knocked down by the flood waters and their grounds were
damaged by wandering clydesdales. They are unsafe to play on,
however Randall assures us they will be back bigger and brighter
for the start of next season in September this year. Normal club
meetings are still being held, along with working bees, and more
planned for the future. Please phone Randall Reck on 5427 9083
if you are interested in helping or becoming a member of the
Glenore Grove Cricket Club. (see cartoon below).
Laidley
The Laidley cricket fields were flood affected but they are playing
now with the season’s end only one month away. Laidley’s 1st
Grade team is currently leading the Ipswich and West Moreton
Cricket Association’s competition.
Laidley has six teams in first grade - 1st grade, 2nd grade, Under
16, Under 14 and Under 12. They are hoping to get an under 10
team going for next season
Mulgowie
The Mulgowie Cricket is still in the competition despite being
flood damaged. There was about a metre of water over the
bottom end of the field and a bit through the sheds but nothing
structural.
Competing in the Lockyer Cricket Association competition their
A Grade team is currently in third place.
Their teams are as follows: Seniors - A grade, A2 and 2 x B
grades plus a combined Under 16 side (with Esk and Helidon)
and Under 12 side consisting of all Mulgowie players.
Laidley Indoor Bowls Club
Nineteen players play fixtures at Culture Centre. There are six
clubs in the association. They come from Forest Hill (play at the
Hall) Grantham (Snr Citizens in Gatton) RSL Gatton (RSL Hall)
Lockrose at Lutheran Church, Lockrose and Laidley at Cultural
Centre.
You are welcome to join and play both competition and social.
Competitions are for singles and pairs etc.
The Association meets first Wednesday of every month at hall.
There are three players in the Association that are over 90 years
old who are very fit and live in own homes!
AFL Sign On
The first sporting event this year was our interhouse
swimming carnival held at the Gatton Pool on Friday
4th of February. Once again a number of activities were
offered to students both in and out of the pool. Each
attending students was given an opportunity to earn their
house points in championship events and a number of
novelty events including house swims, bowl the teachers,
shoot the hoop and the very popular activity of bomb the
teacher. All students worked very hard throughout the day
to contribute points to their house. A number a staff also
worked very hard to earn their houses points in novelty
events.
At the end of the day it was Boomori’s effort in
championship events that saw them take out Champion
House for 2011. They dominated in competitive
swimming events and as a result were clear winners on the
day by 233 points. The overall points tally is as follows:
Boomori – 1403 points
Lalirra – 1170 points
Wundurra – 1116 points
LDSHS SPORTS STAR OF THE MONTH
This year it has been decided to in newsletters and on parade
reward a student for their persistent effort and positive contribution
to sport in our school. This month the award goes to a Yr 8
for his willingness to get up and participate in school sports.
Congratulations to Jack George who was recognised for his effort
in both the Inter house and District Swimming Carnival. At our
inter house athletics carnival Jack was seen throughout the day
participating in both championship and house events. He attended
the district swimming carnival and placed 3 rd in his butterfly
event. When asked to participate in the 13 &14 years medially he
willingly stepped up to the task only learning the order of the swim
just prior to the event commencing. Well done Jack and thank you
for the positive contribution you have made to our school.
