WEDNESDAY 28 TH NOVEMBER<br />

What an honour it is to have the privilege to sell some of the best<br />

livestock in the country and surrounding areas – particularly when it is<br />

so well supported by producers and buyers from near and far – all<br />

eager to put their name to one of the finest shows of prime stock<br />

available on one day. This year’s show and sale yet again sxceeded<br />

all expectations, aided by boosted confidence on both the lambs and<br />

beef sector in the run up to the festive season and enforced by<br />

having over 15 buyers in attendance producing one of the dearest<br />

trades seen at any fatstock show across the country so far this year.<br />

Thanks must be credited to all market staff, stewards, members of<br />

the show committee who committed to make the show a success,<br />

with special mention to show secretaries Mary Bonner and Jo<br />

Bromwich for carrying out suck an efficient post, both prior to and<br />

during the sale, to ensure things ran smoothly, and to all who kindly<br />

sponsored prize money and classes for whom the show is most<br />

grateful to.<br />

PRIME SHOW CATTLE: 50<br />

PRIME HEIFERS AVERAGE – 249.69p/kg<br />

PRIME STEERS AVERAGE – 229p/kg<br />

An electric buzz surrounded the Wednesday fat ring here at <strong>Thame</strong><br />

as one of the best shows of prime cattle seen at <strong>Thame</strong> for some<br />

years were kindly judged by Mr Matthew Morris of Joseph Morris<br />

Family Butchers, South Kilworth.<br />

Stiff competition in all classes from exhibitors saw MJ Dickens &<br />

Family take the title of Supreme Champion beast and taking home<br />

the Vale of Aylesbury Cattle Challenge Cup – sponsored by Natwest<br />

Bank, with their 19 month old Limousin heifer weighing 640kg and<br />

purchased by the judge Morris Butchers, who backed their decision<br />

by purchasing the heifer at 340p/kg to gross £2176.


This heifer also claimed 1 st prize in class 4 (Best Butchers Maiden<br />

Heavyweight Heifer of a Continental Breed or Cross) sponsored by<br />

Whaddon Farm Livestock Transport, and takes home the<br />

‘Hughendon Motors Challenge Cup’.<br />

The Dickens family also claimed the title of Reserve Champion with<br />

their Limousin steer weighing 580kg being 1 st in class 1 (Best<br />

Butchers Lightweight Steer) and realising 300p/kg selling to firm local<br />

supporters PC Turner & Son, Farnborough, grossing £1740.<br />

Class 7 (best beast of any breed shown by an exhibitor under 26<br />

years of age) was won by Miss Gemma Richardson, Preston Bissett,<br />

also winning the best bred & fed cup with her 490kg stylish British<br />

Blue x heifer finding much attention selling at 295p/kg to Woolley<br />

Bros, Sheffield.<br />

The title of ‘best butchers maiden lightweight heifer’ claiming the<br />

Norman Jerrams Challenge Cup was awarded to Richard & Judy<br />

Fountaine’s 500kg British Blue heifer selling at 290p/kg to Lea<br />

Coulton. 282p/kg was achieved for loyal show supporter Andre<br />

Lake’s shapely 605kg unhaltered British Blue heifer winning the best<br />

butchers pair of heifers, both selling to Woolley Bros.<br />

David Plested’s 15 month old Limousin heifer to 281p/kg with AR &<br />

SB Franklin’s pure Devon heifer – a credit to the breed and their<br />

stockmanship, winning class 6 with the best native bred selling to<br />

278p/kg grossing £1654.10 to Morris’ Butchers.<br />

265p/kg was achieved for KW Slade’s Blonde x heifer at 540kg with<br />

JA Drewe’s 695kg Blonde x to 266p/kg and £1848 from class 9 and<br />

Miss Jane Britnell winning class 2 with her Limousin x 715kg steer<br />

grossing £1658.80, having previously been purchased from <strong>Thame</strong><br />

Market last December winning her the ‘Special Challenge Cup’.<br />

Lighter commercial heifers from K Walker & Son proved sought after<br />

with 440kg Limousin x to 237p/kg at 13 months with MA & L<br />

Richardson’s native sired South Devon steer to 242p/kg, having won<br />

class 5 and taking home the regular consignor award.<br />

The baby beef class was won by MJ Dickens & Family for their 9<br />

month old British Blue steer with David Plested taking 2 nd place and<br />

selling his 8 month Limousin steer at £1060.


The cow class was won by DW Gurney & Son with their Limousin x<br />

cow to 155p/kg and RL & JM Priddle’s 2 nd prize winner realising<br />

122p/kg and grossing £1122.<br />

PRIME LAMBS: 517<br />

SHOW LAMBS: 245<br />

The quality of show stock continued into the lambs, this year judged<br />

by the expert eye of Mr Bill Rawdings of Marsworth who awarded the<br />

Champion Pen of lambs to Miss Holly Levinge for her 44kg Beltex<br />

sired lambs, also winning the Young <strong>Farmers</strong> class, sponsored by<br />

Major Farm Services and selling to Evans Butchers for 277p/kg and<br />

£122/head. The Reserve Champion pen of lambs was awarded to AJ<br />

& FJ Claridge’s Beltex x, also winning class 15 selling to the judge Bill<br />

Rawdings for £106 and 226p/kg. 1 lamb from GR Fountaine found<br />

special treatment being sold separately at £125 and 275p/kg to<br />

Evans and TG Levinge’s 40½kg Beltex x to £86.50 and 214p/kg to C<br />

Humphreys & Son.<br />

Barton Abbey Farm’s Texel x took the 1 st prize in class 17, sponsored<br />

by Block 9 Design, <strong>Thame</strong>, for 190p/kg and PB Brown’s 1 st prize<br />

winners in class 17 to £79.50 for ‘any other Continental breed or<br />

cross over 206kg’.<br />

59kg from TR Reeve to £93.50 with Roy Richardson dominating class<br />

17 yet again with his thick as brick Charollais lambs to £89 and<br />

175p/kg for over weights bought by British Premium Meats. The<br />

native class 1 st prize was awarded to RL & JM Priddle realising £81.<br />

Commercial lambs strengthened and readily 160p/kg with all weights<br />

in demand topping at 173p/kg for A Payne and J Tapping to 171p/kg<br />

with Passmore Bros to 170p/kg and WE Smith’s to 171p/kg. Heavier<br />

lambs 160p/kg+ for J Gibson, R Richardson, AE Mogford & Son with<br />

DJ Parker & Bird’s marvellous show of Zwartble x to £91, with trade<br />

of the day to their pen of 50kg at £90.<br />

Fierce completion for all classes of ewes on offer with a new class at<br />

the 2012 show for ‘Best Cull Ewe’ of Any Breed or Cross’ proving well<br />

supported topping at £110 for a pure Charollais ewe from class<br />

winner KW Slade. This ewe sold to the judge Mr Bill Rawdings on<br />

behalf of Romford Meats.<br />

Texel x commercial ewes topped at £87.50 for R & J Butler with WE<br />

Smith’s heavy Suffolk x to £86 claiming 2 nd prize and J Tapping’s<br />

Continental x to £80. Small but smart Beltex x from M Walker & S<br />

Taylor realised £80.

140 cattle forward for the final sale of November giving a throughput<br />

of 1893 for the month.<br />

There were either younger cattle or colder cattle on offer this week<br />

with no forward sorts in the yard.<br />

MA Hunt topped the sale at £1035 for their Simmental x heifer at 24<br />

months.<br />

Tom Dancer sold Blue x Friesian steers to £936 at 22 months while<br />

Alan Saw sold his Parthenais steer (14 months) at £935. A run of<br />

Aberdeen Angus x Friesian steers (20 months) from PC & RW White<br />

sold at £892.<br />

Suckled steers sold to a top of £830 for Blonde x from Roger Sabine<br />

with Somborne Park Farms selling their Limousin x at the same<br />

money. Chris Sabine sold his run of Blonde x calves at £725.<br />

Tom Dancer sold his Aberdeen Angus x heifer at £902. Alan Saw<br />

followed with a Blue x at £878 while Limousin x from J & P Hedges<br />

sold at £860.<br />

Suckled heifers topped at £630 for Charolais x from Roger Sabine.<br />

Feeding cows sold to £885 for Simmental x from Eddie Smith with<br />

Blue x selling to £830 from Alan Saw.<br />

A few calves forward found a slightly steadier trade to £220 for<br />

Blonde x from CJ Sabine. Aberdeen Angus x heifer from RA & M<br />

Giles-Austin sold to £140 which a pen of Black & White bulls sold at<br />

£55.<br />

Feeding Texel x ewes sold to £60 and rams to £69.50. Texel x store<br />

lambs sold to £57 from Frances Castle.

This years show was kindly judged by Mr David Plested of Chinnor<br />

who gave the Champion to the first prize heifer – a 549kg Limousin<br />

consigned by Mike Dickens & Family and selling at 330p/kg to Parrott<br />

Bros, Whitchurch.<br />

The Reserve Champion was the first prize steer, a homebred<br />

Limousin from Judy Fountaine selling at 260p/kg at 646kgs to the<br />

judge.<br />

Judy Fountaine also won the best home bred and fed with another<br />

Limousin steer selling at 252p/kg to Ben Coulton.<br />

The Young <strong>Farmers</strong> beast was won by Thomas Hodges at 585kg for<br />

a Blue x heifer selling to Ben Coulton.<br />

PRIME SHEEP – 1177<br />

The Champion pen of lambs came from the heavy Texel class shown<br />

by AJ & FJ Claridge weighing 47½kgs and selling for £150 each,<br />

bought by Ben Coulton on behalf of <strong>Farmers</strong> Fresh, Kenilworth. The<br />

Claridge family completed a clean sweep by winning the lightweight<br />

Texel class and reserve Champions weighing 39½kgs and selling to<br />

Ben Coulton for £120/head again for <strong>Farmers</strong> Fresh.<br />

Trade in general was very strong for the best Continental shapes<br />

44kgs and under, topping at 206p/kg from Richard Haynes and<br />

Richard Fountaine. George Gurney won the Young <strong>Farmers</strong> class<br />

and sold his at 199p/kg.<br />

Heavy lambs sold to £94.50 for Suffolk x from Chris and Andrew<br />

Whitehead, Nigel Haynes followed at £92.50.<br />

Steers - A good mixture traded with Aberdeen Angus X leading the<br />

way at £1698 (R4L, 21 months). Whilst a consignment of 5 Aberdeen<br />

Angus X (21months) topped at £1656, average £1541. Others worthy<br />

of mention an Aberdeen Angus at £1562, B/Blue X at £1502 and<br />

Charolais X at £1500. A large number of Holstein/Friesians sold, with<br />

the best at £1380, £1299, £1270 and £1256, with many more in<br />

excess of £1100. A Montbeliarde X selling to £1380.<br />

Heifers - Once again A/Angus X in front at £1311. A consignment of<br />

7 A/Angus X, average age 19.6 months and average £1146 (top<br />

£1251). The best of the Continental X, a Blonde X at £1303, B/Blue X<br />

to £1284 and Charolais X to £1242.<br />

Young Bulls - A limited supply of under 16 months, a Blonde X<br />

topping at £1428 with a Simmental X at £1394. Over 16 months<br />

found more forward. A Charolais X at £1634 in front with S/Devons to<br />

£1467 and £1400.<br />

lacked in flesh and would have benefitted from further feeding.<br />

Dairy Cows - No Holstien/Friesian traded. A Jersey at £413 topping<br />

the section.<br />

OTM’s - Only a few offered, B/Blue heifers selling to £1402, £1332<br />

and a S/Devon X at £1332.<br />

Mature Bulls - A tremendous B/Blue E2 at £1720 and a Hereford<br />
