CIRENCESTER LIVESTOCK MARKET REPORT

83 REARING CALVES

Bulls £410, Heifers £325
Another very strong trade today with reports that some calves £70/£80 dearer than at
other local centres.
Dairy Breeds (29): Best Friesians to a top of £135 for D J Spratt, Aust, £118 for J D
Wright. Best £90+, avg £77. Norwegian Reds well sold from W F Fisher & Son to
£108, weaned Friesians to £310.
Native (18): A single Hereford Bull to £400 for K D Sheridan, heifers to £165 and
£265 for A W Jones, best Angus bulls from R Beard & Son to £350 and £285 to £300
(5) and £340 for Liz Best. Avg £277. Angus heifers of medium quality to £175 for
K G & C Y Gough weaned steers (April) to £365.
Charolais (2): A rare entry from this breed reaching £405 for a bull calf from R M &
B K Rawlings.
Simmental (3): Short entry, bulls to £290 and heifers to £325 for J A Hobbs.
Limousin/Blonde (16): Strong entry. Blonde bulls to £400, £390 and £382 from C J
E Warr & Sons 7 avg £361. Good Limousins from M T & I Scott & Son reached
£395, Blonde and Limousin heifers to £170.
British Blue (14): Good trade. £410 top for J A Hobbs, generally medium bulls
otherwise £300, £335 avg £325. Heifers topped at £272, £250, £238 for D & M
Whitcombe.
28 BEEF COWS & CALVES

A dispersal sale of incalf cows due April / May to Continental & Aberdeen Angus
bulls from M/s J & L Barton, Leonard Stanley saw South Devon cows to £1060 twice
& £960 with Hereford’s to £950.
Friesian grazing cows sold to £800 from M/s J & R Smith, Newport. Jersey cows &
calves sold to £275 twice from M/s Swell Wold Farming, Hook Norton.
289 STORE CATTLE
11.30 am – Auctioneers: Arthur White & Chris Voyce
Averages: Steers £824 (175p/kg), Heifers £701 (168p/kg)
A similar number forward saw a much improved trade with some cattle up nearly
£100 on 3 weeks ago.
Very few stronger near meat cattle forward with the Continental steers over £1100
topping at £1255 (174p/kg) for a British Blue from Mr R Pullin, Berkeley & £1235
(184p/kg) for Simmental steers & £1205 (184p/kg) for Charolais steers from M/s G
& J Hyett, Whaddon. The stronger farming cattle saw some grand cattle on show
trading over £1000 (175 – 200p/kg) with Simmental steers to £1095 (201p/kg) &
£1040 (178p/kg) from Mr H Pearce, Ingst & £1045 (190p/kg) from Mr A Wheeler,
King Stanley. Limousin steers sold to £1150 (159p/kg) & £1100 (180p/kg) from M/s
J & W Rodgman, Kimbolton.
The strong native breeds were also in short supply with Hereford steers to £1095
(170p/kg) from M/s J & R Smith, Newport with Aberdeen Angus steers to £1100
(175p/kg) from M/s G & J Hyett, Whaddon. Overage Welsh Black steers sold to
£1035 (162p/kg) from Mr E Evans, Haresfield. Very few strong framed Friesian
steers on offer topping at £970 (169p/kg) from the same home.
The stronger heifers saw the best sorts £850 - £950 (175 – 190p/kg) topping at £1030
(165p/kg) for a Hereford heifer from M/s D & H Smith, Saul & £990 (171p/kg) for
an Aberdeen Angus from Mr R Pullin, Berkeley. The stronger farming heifers
seemed well sold trading between £650 - £750 (165 – 180p/kg).
The weaned calves & young stores again met a strong trade with Simmental steers (7
– 9mnths) to £660 (232p/kg) & £600 (230p/kg) with the heifers to £505 (177p/kg)
from M/s W Lane & Partners, Denchworth. Aberdeen Angus & South Devon bulls (5
– 9mnths) sold to £695 (193p/kg) & £690 (195p/kg) from M/s Ellipsis Farms,
Sevenhampton. A Charolais steer (12mnths) sold to £800 (186p/kg) from Mr G
Taylor, Aston Magna.

SQQ – 145.7p/kg Overall Average 144.2p/kg
More lambs out but trade keeps slipping with export values less and the home trade
struggling to move lamb. The best handy & medium weight lambs traded between
150 – 165p/kg topping at 166p/kg £73 for 44kg from Mr R Richins. The general run
of lambs traded between 141 – 147p/kg. The looser coated or leaner lambs were a
struggle trading at store prices between £55 - £60. The heavier lambs were mostly
£64 - £69 topping at £70 for 49p/kg from Mr S Faux. Trade was lower but still ahead
of most local centres.

Overall Average - £49.59
Similar effect as the prime lambs with trade difficult but up on many places
yesterday. The stronger Suffolk & Continental ewes trading between £65 - £75 with
Mules £55 - £60. The medium & half meated ewes traded between £40 - £50 with the
small & plain ewes selling between £25 - £40.
386 STORE LAMBS

With little confidence in the finish trade, the stores look a good price against the fat at
present but probably seem a good investment. The stronger stores traded between £58
- £63 with the medium lambs £48 - £55. The few backward or long term lambs traded
between £30 - £40.
15 BEEF CATTLE

Steers 191p/kg Heifers 179p/kg
Not enough forward with many more needed and another strong trade (Again well
ahead of other markets & certainly deadweight) The better shaped sorts (R & some
O+ grades) traded well between 190 - 197p/kg topping at 199p/kg for a 635kg
Limousin steer from M/s B J Ford & Sons. The commercial cattle (O+ and some O-
grades) traded between 180 – 189p/kg. The heavy cattle saw a 765kg Aberdeen
Angus steer to £1510 (198p/kg) from Mr G Owen.
29 BARREN COWS & OTM CATTLE

Cows 87p/kg, Steers 180p/kg, Heifers 160p/kg
Total contrast in this section with a great show of quality OTM cattle forward
meeting a very good trade with Charolais steers to 191p/kg & 188p/kg from M/s L &
M Smith. Some grand heavyweight steers also selling well to £1624 (182p/kg) from
Mr A Hunt. Heifers saw a 610kg Aberdeen Angus to 185p/kg from M/s J Leaver &
Sons.
The cows saw one of the worst shows with little meat. The few better sorts sold well
with a 850kg Friesian to 126p/kg £1066 from M/s G & F Robertson & 125p/kg for a
935kg Charolais £1164 from Mrs A Orr Ewing. The majority were plainer Friesian
types trading between 60 – 75p/kg generally.

pleased to welcome all Young Farmers Clubs to our Young Farmers Stock Judging
Competition. Clubs affiliated to the NFYFC are invited to make UNLIMITED
entries of teams of 3 members, who must be 26 years of age or under on 1 st
September 2012. Competitors will be required to judge all 3 of the following rings
of 4 stock, and to give reasons on one, (one member of each team to give reasons on
each ring). All to be judged as commercial Fatstock.·One ring of Beef Cattle · One
ring of Prime Lambs ·One ring of Prime Pigs. AWARDS First, second and third
team prizes, Highest placed individual, Highest Placed Junior (16 and under on 1 st
