A Brief Look at the
Sai Convention 2010

A fortnightly column by Dr.Suresh Govind
transformation e-zine | vol 2 (2010)
INNER TRANSFORMATION,
OUTER TRANSFORMATION
Two weeks have passed since 1000 devotees gathered at the last
Sai convention in Port Dickson. The dust has not settled as people
still speak of the convention. The inspiring sessions, the overlowing
love, the wonderful organization of the convention, the
bhajans, the fellowship and most of all the presence of Bhagavan
especially when so much of spirit of unity and purity were felt.
Transformation, our National Newsletter was launched with a
pledge that it will reach the hearts of all members of centres and
bhajan units once in two weeks. The reason for the column is to
trace the development of all centres and council and to offer an
opportunity to consolidate activities. The purpose is also to
remind us in the deployment of all programmes that both inner
transmission and outer transmission must go hand in hand.
Fourteen days have passed. These are important formative days as
the new council needs to re-look at the directions laid out in the
Vision (Way Forward) book released during the convention. 5 days
after the convention the National Wanita coordinator gathered a
team to re-look at the modules to be deployed by November 19th
2010, the Ladies Day. The meeting focused on what is the most
crucial need in the community and reassessed the priority using
the “LIGHT” modular approach. Somehow if we can mobilize the
force of the ladies wing, we can reach to thousands of houses and
convert them to wonderful homes of hope through this “LIGHT”
programme.
I sat in the Sathya Sai Educare Board meeting comprised of all
program coordinators. The Academy formally under the Vice
–President of Education, combed through every programme
deployed under the Education wing and stressed the deployment
methods. The SSE was asked to re-look at the training approach.
The curriculum was asked to be re-evaluated to see if the contents
were universal enough for us to approach a larger section of the
community. The alumni were asked to be identiied. It’s a paradox
that after 25 years of SSE and EHV in the communities that we
haven’t actually seen a visible force of these trained people either
at the centre or state leadership. We need to consolidate this
unique and valuable force for both teaching and offering their
leadership especially when they have been exposed to the
Avathar’s philosophy of value training.
There is a real cry for us to centre stage the Parentcare
programme. I remember Sis Rita Bruce; the doyen of parenting in
the Sai world after reading the entire Parentcare module remarked
that not only we should immediately sent the whole module to
Bhagavan but to patent this beautiful piece of work. The entire
civilization is at the brink of impending disaster largely due to the
generation of social unrest and increasing trends of negative social
behaviour. The root of the problem lies in attitude. If the parents
are empowered to shape this important aspect of human personality,
we have the capacity to save hundreds if not thousands of
families. We have developed the bullets over the years. Unfortunately
the gun to ire, in the form of strong organizational commitment
has yet to be forceful. The Academy board took the decision
that parents sending their respective children for SSE classes must
undergo the Parentcare programme. For this it was suggested that
in January, the Academy will implement a national Parentcare
camp where every state coordinator is to identify a team of 10
trainers to be sent for this important Train the Trainer camp.
Details will follow. This was indeed inspiring as the programme
possesses the potential to transform many families and ignite
the power of love and care in homes.
Last Sunday exactly 14 days later, the National Youth coordinators
team sat in Kuala Lumpur to formulate their action plans.
A national camp is in the pipeline. A structured system of
consolidating the form 5 leavers was discussed. The breakthrough
was the decision to organize in January a Sathya Sai
Alumni evening. This would prove historical. A letter would be
sent out to all centres to please scan, see and identify past SSE
and EHV students who have been exposed to the classes since
1985. There is an urgent call to every one of them and we
would like to invite them for this evening in Kuala Lumpur.
Details by the organizers i.e. National Youth Committee will
follow. The sound of the conch blowing could be heard. The call
to awaken to the need of the hour was again reminded.
In Malacca, newspapers reported a high incidence of teenage
pregnancy. Baby dumping has become a regular feature. A
symposia on “RETAINING INNOCENCE IN YOUTH” was
suggested. Concept paper to state governments would be at
this time would be welcomed and a detailed one was to be
prepared by November end. An amazing “Values at work”
seminar was suggested. An incredible idea on how people at
work can practice values would be timely.
As I left the young and energetic group, it was déjà vu for 25
years before I could visualize us when we were youth sitting in
groups discussing ideas on how society can be transformed.
We formed in the last 14 days a committee to re-look at the
secretarial and inancial matters of the council. We met and the
three hours discussion ended with a generation of irm guidelines
for these important tasks.
An Exco meeting was called last Wednesday. The team
returned. Many with new positions, but they were all there. Till
midnight we discussed all the relevant issues. As I drove back
home that night I wondered what made these incredible souls
dedicate so much time and care for others. What do they gain?
What keeps them going? Indeed consciousness is a perplexing
subject and more perplexing is the subject of transforming
consciousness which is core business of the council.
The next few months will see the council members travel to
every state to monitor, understand and provide solutions if not
learn from everyone where they are and what they would want
to do as far as the wing activities are concerned. The only
prayer we have is that state coordinators must call and ensure
that centre leaders must compulsorily be present for these
sessions for the council leaders are there to help and make
centres and state relevant to a greater cause.
In February 2011 we travel to Swami. There are only a few
months left. The national wing committees are at present meeting
to formulate the new plans and reinforce the older ones.
The birthday celebrations in every state will take place. There
is plenty to do but in doing all what we do, we must ensure we
are having peace, love and most of all possess the attitude of
enjoying what we do…for after all, life is both inner transformation
and outer transmission.

A Cause For Celebration
by R.S. Kamini
transformation e-zine | vol 2 (2010)
Intense lushes of grace showered the three-day Sai
Convention 2010 that was held recently, at the Glory Beach
Resort in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, between 3rd and
5th September. Themed Celebrating Life, the convention
was universal in nature to reinstate the joy of celebration,
embark an inward journey and transform in order to break
the barriers of love and faith that conceals our very nature.
The Sai Convention 2010 or SaiCon as it’s fondly known
was truly a cause for jubilance, thrilling discoveries and
informative congregation of the inquisitive as well as the
experienced hearts and minds.
DAY ONE
The convention kick started at roughly 2pm with uplifting
Bhajans by the National Bhajan Team who illed the atmosphere
with sweet kirtans that helped narrow the attention
of hundreds of convener towards divinity. Vedic
chanters made their way through the red carpet 45
minutes after the Bhajans carrying Bhagawan’s padukas to
symbolise the grand entrance of the Eternal Master amidst
a highly-charged environment. As Swami’s padukas was
placed at the gloriously decorated seating arrangement,
the Elders and leaders witnessed the lighting of the Jyothi
to signify the start of the three-day convention. The
programme was followed by a spiritually elevating
welcoming speech by the Chairman of the Zone 4, Bro. Dr
V.K. Ravindran.
The convention was further graced with the presence of
the honourable Yang Berhormat Datuk Ghazali Yusof who
delightfully witnessed the opening performance by the
Klang Valley Youth. The youths presented a drama that
was aptly titled Celebrating Life depicting the life story a
youth who faced a sudden death and went to the heavens.
His conversation with God narrated a series of lashback
which revealed how he had lived a mundane life. While his
character had the opportunity to live a beautiful life, he
was too wrapped up in his own humdrums that he forgot
to celebrate life as the years swept through. The drama
ended with the youth realising that his life was indeed a
missing puzzle. He soon repented before being a given a
chance by the Almighty to relive his days.
As the drama came to an end, the organisers invited the
guest of honour to deliver his opening address on
Celebrating Diversity for Peace and Harmony. Centre
delegates then made their way to the Annual General
Meeting (AGM). After a dinner break, the night programme
resumed with several cultural performances including an
elevating choir performance by the SCA Group and Multicultural
Dance extravaganza by the SSEHV children of Alor
Setar. The convention which was also organised in
conjunction with Bhagawan Baba’s 85th Birthday saw
a unique presentation that followed soon after the
spectacular performances.
Participants were given a heads on the latest development
of the Sai Care Project, an on-going national
welfare project that was being done in conjunction
with the 85th Advent of the Avathar, through ‘News you
would like to hear’. A couple of newsreaders presented
the development of each project in the form of news
headlines. Several ‘value advertisements’ and community
service messages, in line with the SaiCare projects
were slated in between the news segments that
impressed the guest of honour who was witnessing the
event that night. The honourable Minister from the
Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Unity Yang
Berhormat Senator Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon was then
called to deliver his keynote address. The outgoing
Central Council president Bro. Billy Fong, accompanied
by deputy president Prof Dr Suresh Govind presented
Tan Sri Koh with a compilation of the latest reports on
the SaiCare project to be handed over to the government
for further action. The highlight concluded the
irst day of the convention.

transformation e-zine | vol 2 (2010)
DAY 2
For the irst time, a congregation of almost 1,000 people
were broken up into 40 mini groups to facilitate the workshop
sessions which served as sathsangs on Celebrating
Self, Health and Environment’. The workshop was moderated
by selected candidates including state coordinators
and centre chairpersons. Workshop participants were
given personal evaluation questionnaires and were asked
to evaluate their personal progress on all three categories.
The workshop was mainly aimed at guiding them in their
spiritual journey as well their health progress and their
contribution towards the environment, which serves as a
cause for celebration in their daily lives. The afternoon
session witnessed a meaningful Educare Convocation
ceremony to celebrate the graduating Group 4 SSE
children who received their honorary certiicates from the
Educare Academy, an arm of the Education Wing. The
certiicates were presented by the honorary educationist
and renowned historian Tan Sri Prof Emeritus Dr Khoo
Kay Kim.
Participants were once again broke into their respective
groups to attend a second round of workshop. This time
around, individuals and families came together to share
their thoughts and pick up pointers from the sea of information
shared by subject matter experts such as Bro Dato’
J Jegadeesan who spoke on Family Bonding. ………who
moderated on Harmony at Home and Sis Vijaya
Ramachandran and Sis Sitpah who deliberated on Parent
Care for the afternoon session. After an inspiring
experience-sharing session by a few devotees, audience
were thrilled with yet another startling display of talents
through a drama presentation entitled “Unity in Diversity”
depicting the importance of upholding values regardless
of the environment or circumstances. The story
revolved around the a family where each member
opting to have things done their way. Modesty and
honesty were far from their lives until the senior most
member of the family shared a few tales that portrayed
values such as unity, ilial piety, trust, right conduct and
love. The family members reunited upon hearing these
tales only to realise that Sai Baba Himself had came in
disguise to teach them a very precious lesson. This
very play was staged in Prashanti Nilayam, in the
physical presence of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, in
conjunction with Chinese New Year early this year.
A sea of change swept the Sathya Sai Baba Central
Council of Malaysia as outgoing leaders paved the way
for new blood to carry on the Master’s Mission and lead
the Sai Organisation in Malaysia.. The new ofice bearers
inclusive of state and national project coordinators
were oficially introduced to the entire congregation
shortly after Prof Dr Suresh Govind delivered his
acceptance speech as the new president of the Sathya
Sai Central Council of Malaysia. It was an emotional
affair as the council bid farewell to the outgoing president
Bro Billy Fong. Bro Suresh Govind presented a
special token of appreciation to honour Bro Billy and
his wife for their relentless contribution and transformation
they had brought forth.
Bro Suresh Govind also took the opportunity to launch
the ‘Way Forward’ booklet, which will serve as guideline
for all council members, state and national project
coordinators in executing their duties.

DAY 3
For the irst time, a congregation of almost 1,000 people
wDAY 3.
The inal half-day journey saw the launch of the Self-
Transformation Programme under the guidance of Bro
Jeothish Babu the chairperson of Willeton Centre, Australia.
The STP Programme is a powerful tool of transformation
that was proven to be great hit in Australia in transforming
the minds the hearts of each sadhaka to imbibe,
live and inspire others by practicing Bhagawan Baba’s
teachings.
Prior to the SaiCon 2010, the organisers had introduced a
short ilm competition for the Youths. The winners were
feted at the event. The winning entry titled ‘ANTaryami’
was submitted Bro Jaidev Dorai and team from the Klang
Valley. The short ilm lasting three minutes told the story
of an ant that travelled aimlessly until it met a master ant
that helped set some directions and transform its life. The
irst runner-up was an entry by a group of youths from
Ipoh, Perak while the second runner-up was for short-ilm
by youths of Johor. Winners took home hampers worth
RM100, RM50 and RM30, respectively.
The highlight of the day was a two-hour speech by the
newly elected president Dr Suresh Govind who spoke on
Celebrating Life Forever-the Way Forward, where he
shared the organisations’ aspirations, Swami’s expectations
and a preview of the much needed paradigm shift for
the organisation as well as individuals as the next step
forward.
The convention ended with simple closing ceremony led
by quirky speech and ‘take-home’ messages that was
delivered by Dato’ Jegadeesan before the closing aarathi.

The Divine Answer
A lady in distress was the call of the day. Fresh from mourning her husband’s death, Susila and her ive children were
featured in a local newspaper seeking help to ix her home and cut the coconut tree that falls over their roof. The youths
of SSBC Bukit Mertajam returned the call on Sept 19 and 20, by contributing new rooing and looring. They performed
narayana seva, Educare classes, presented a new altar, as well as chop the coconut tree that was endangering the lives of
the family.
Prior to the project, which is a gift to Swami in conjunction with his 85th Birthday this year, Northern Region Coordinator
Bro Magadave presented a talk to the youths on Swami’s mission, His work and their duty as His instrument. This
resulted in a total of 45 volunteers (including 15 villagers) for the project.
The ladies of the centre cooked and served the villagers as they assisted with the restoration work. Once completed, the
villagers joined the volunteers for a Bhajan session, seated on the new and clean loor with the family. Although it was
the irst time they heard of Swami, it was truly a blessed occasion to see them so receptive towards Him and the Sai
mission to serve mankind. The house owner even said, “Tears and thanks to Swami for his unlimited and endless divine
grace showered to us.”
Heartfelt thanks to all that made this event a success – Bukit Mertajam Indian Youth Organization, Penang Sai Youths,
Alma Sai Centre and National Grama Seva Members.

SURRENDER
transformation e-zine | vol 2 (2010)
by R.Zeeneeshri
During the Malaysia Day cum Hari Raya Celebration at the
Pure Life Society Orphanage recently, a memorable cheque
presentation ceremony was held. Bro. Gwee Hock Aun, a
trustee and executor of the estate of late Sis. Tan Chooi
Sim, presented a cheque of RM153, 982 to the Sathya Sai
Baba Central Council of Malaysia. The generous gesture of
late Sis Tan, in bequeathing a portion of her estate to the
Sai Council for its social and welfare work is certainly an
act of great compassion and love. Her act reminded us of
Swami’s teaching – to always give, give and give in life. Bro.
Billy Fong, our Vice-President of SCA, received the cheque
on behalf of the Sai Council. Bro Ooi Cheng Sooi, another
trustee and executor of the estate, presented a speech,
which touched the hearts of many, in memory of Sis Tan.
Below are excerpts from the speech:
“Career-wise the late Tan Chooi Sim @ Girlie, had a humble
start as a police constable after dropping out of school.
After a couple of years in the police force she joined the
University Hospital as a receptionist and worked in that
position until she retired. She was a spinster. She lived in a
rented room for many years and managed to maintain
herself and regularly put aside money as savings even
though the job she held paid a meagre salary as it was a
Division 4 post at that time. She was frugal, led a simple life
yet generous when necessary.
”In March 1982 she was advised to purchase a house. She
used her savings to pay the deposit for a single storey
house in SS2 and took a government housing loan to pay
the balance of the purchase price. The repayment period of
the loan was 25 years. A huge chunk of her monthly salary
went towards the monthly repayment of her loan leaving
her with little money to upkeep herself. She somehow
managed and struggled on. When she retired in 1991,
almost all of her pension went towards her loan repayment.
She had to ind a job to supplement her income and
she got herself employed as a clinic assistant at an eye
clinic. “In mid 2008 she paid up the housing loan and her
full pension was restored. Her full pension was suficient
to see her through each month and so she didn’t have to
depend any more on the income derived from the eye
clinic. Age was catching up. She was 72 years old then.
However, to keep herself occupied she continued to work
part time - two days a week - at the eye clinic. She enjoyed
the relatively slower pace of life for about only six months
as death struck in February 2009. She was healthy and
strong, not aflicted by any old age sickness.
On 6th February 2009 at midday she was happily chatting
with the neighbour over the fence. At 2.00pm I was
informed she had collapsed and was unconscious. She
was rushed to the University Hospital. She didn’t come
out of the coma and passed away the next morning. She
died of aneurysm – haemorrhage of an artery in the
head. She had a humble career and yet she was able to
leave something behind to beneit others less fortunate.
“Only the people who are close to the late Tan Chooi
Sim knew the sort of person she was. She got along well
with friends and strangers alike being always good
natured, god fearing, kind, humble, accommodative,
generous and meek. As she lived by herself, life can be
very lonely. She was very close to my wife, her cousin,
whom she turned to for advice and looked upon her as
her conidante. She celebrated all the festivities with us
– Chinese New Year, Reunion dinner, Mooncake Festival,
Ancestral worship, Wesak, and so on. She went
shopping and marketing with us, celebrated her birthday
and our birthdays with us. We had dinner out regularly.
She turned to us when sick or in any emergency
situation. She followed us when we went visiting or
outing or on short vacation. In short we were indeed
her family. We attended to her when she collapsed. We
rushed her to hospital and were at her side when she
passed away. We made the arrangements for the
funeral and the post funeral religious ceremonies.”
We miss her. Memories of her will endure in our hearts.
May the merits of her good deeds plant the seed of a
better and higher rebirth for her. Bro Billy Fong in his
address at the event, thanked the family of late Tan
Chooi Sim for her generous act of love.

Lunar
Get-Together
transformation e-zine | vol 2 (2010)
by R.Zeeneeshri
With a candle pressed into place, she unfolded the lantern
into a beautiful twist of colours. The silhouettes of light
sparkled in the night, as children walked around carrying
their lanterns, playing as the full moon glowed up ahead. It
was the Mid-Autumn Festival, widely known as Mooncake
Festival. Chinese devotees and children gathered together
for celebration at the SSBC of Bangsar last Tuesday to commemorate
the moon worship. Traditionally on this day,
Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire
the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes
and under the moon together. This year, under the invitation
of the SSBC of Bangsar, devotees from SS2 and
Seputeh Bhajan Units spend loving family time with their
brothers and sisters of Bangsar.
The evening experienced melodious Chinese bhajans
amongst the normal Sai bhajans. Vibrations were cool and
calming as the congregation sang along, for their dear Sai.
Children from the SS2 EHV classes then presented an exciting
drama on the signiicances of the festival. Celebration
of the festival is strongly associated with the legend of
Houyi and Chang'e, the moon Goddess of Immortality. The
version depicted by the EHV children states that Houyi
was an immortal and Chang'e was a beautiful young girl,
working in the palace of the Jade Emperor as an attendant
to the Queen Mother of the West (the Jade Emperor's
wife). Houyi aroused the jealousy of the other immortals,
who then slandered him before the Jade Emperor. Houyi
and his wife, Chang'e, were subsequently banished from
heaven. They were forced to live on Earth. Houyi had to
hunt to survive and became a skilled and famous archer.
At that time, there were ten suns, in the form of threelegged
birds, residing in a mulberry tree in the eastern sea.
Each day one of the sun birds would have to travel around
the world on a carriage, driven by Xihe, the 'mother' of the
suns. One day, all ten of the suns circled together, causing
the Earth to burn. Emperor Yao, the Emperor of China,
commanded Houyi to use his archery skill to shoot down
all but one of the suns. Upon completion of his task, the
Emperor rewarded Houyi with a pill that granted eternal
life. Emperor Yao advised Houyi not to swallow the pill
immediately but instead to prepare himself by praying and
fasting for a year before taking it. Houyi took the pill home
and hid it under a rafter. One day, Houyi was summoned
away again by Emperor Yao. During her husband's
absence, Chang'e, noticed a white beam of light beckoning
from the rafters, and discovered the pill. Chang'e swallowed
it and immediately found that she could ly. Houyi
returned home, realizing what had happened he began to
reprimand his wife. Chang'e escaped by lying out the
window into the sky.
Houyi pursued her halfway across the heavens but was
forced to return to Earth because of strong winds.
Chang'e reached the moon, where she coughed up part
of the pill. Chang'e commanded the hare that lived on
the moon to make another pill. Chang'e would then be
able to return to Earth and her husband. The legend
states that the hare is still pounding herbs, trying to
make the pill. Houyi built himself a palace in the sun,
representing "Yang" (the male principle), in contrast to
Chang'e's home on the moon which represents "Yin"
(the female principle). Once a year, on the ifteenth day
of the full moon, Houyi visits his wife. That is the
reason why the moon is very full and beautiful on that
night. The drama also told many other versions of the
celebration.
The evening ended with a scrumptious meal being
served by the Chinese devotees after bhajans. Among
the items on the menu were porridge, mooncake,
bullshorn, and yam. The celebration was an enchanting
and loving affair illed with merriment and sharing of
traditions and culture.

Educare convocation 2010
by R.S. Kamini
transformation e-zine | vol 2 (2010)
The ideal preached by the Sathya Sai Education in Human
Values (SSEHV) is to raise a generation of boys and girls
who have a clean and clear conscience. Bhagawan Sri
Sathya Sai Baba says ‘The actual syllabus is not as important
as the creation of an atmosphere where noble habits
and ideals can grow and fructify.’ The Bal Vikas pupils
follow Bal Vikas discipline and curriculum only for one day
in the week and attend their usual schools on the other
days. Unless knowledge is transformed into wisdom, and
wisdom is expressed in character, education is a wasteful
process.
These ideals, as raised by Sai Baba, have always been
among the objectives upheld by the Sathya Sai Education
Wing, which has grown into a holistic education system
that covers a wide range of formal, non-formal and informal
education programs in all parts of the world. Here, the
Sathya Sai Education Wing under the auspices of Sathya
Sai Baba Central Council of Malaysia mainly organises
educational programmes that caters for multi-racial and
multi-religious children of Sai devotees. These programs
enables the children and youth aged between 6 and 17 to
understand their own religion, the religion of others and
the Human Values of all religions, which helps mould them
to be useful to themselves, their families and to society.
The Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV)
programme is aimed at fostering the knowledge of religion
and spirituality, the love for the Divine, the Human Values
of mankind and all the great ideals fostered within Sai
Centres into societies' mainstream especially to children.
The great values common to all religions need to be
stressed, rather that the form and name of Sai Baba, so that
all children can imbibe these values and become
examples to their families and society.
The wing also organises training for Bal Vikas (SSE)
Gurus jointly or independently, maintains a reference
library and reading room containing Sai Publications
and journals and operates as a base for Teen Youths
and Youths to evolve to become future leaders of Sai
Centres and society.
Today we celebrate the 63 graduating students for
their endurance in completing the SSE syllabus and
embarking on a greater journey of imbibing and
spreading the Values of Sathya Sai through their
thoughts, words and deeds, as well as the Sathya Sai
National Educare Academy for shaping the young
minds.
Our heartiest congratulations to all graduates of Sathya
Sai Educare Academy!
“Students should aspire to promote the
nation’s wellbeing, its security and happiness.
Sellessness, absence of egoism, unostentatiousness
and true love should be the
hallmarks of a true student.”
