An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
1. Introduction
Social Action Initiative
- An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building -
1. Overview of Sai Care
The Sathya Sai Baba Central Council, as part of its ongoing programme to
promote the consciousness of human values and community service launched
the Social Action Initiative (S.A.I.) Care Programme in August 2008. This
programme involves the implementation of Spiritual Projects, Humanitarian
Community Service Projects and Education in Human Values Projects over the
two year period 2008-2010, as our offering for humanity and nation building in
conjunction with Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s 85th birthday in 2010.
The SAI CARE PROGRAMME is a major project which aimed to bring about
changes in the individual, the community and the nation, a vehicle to help
devotees to transform their lives to reflect Swami’s message.
2. Foreword
As part of the Sai Baba Central Council of Malaysia’s ongoing contribution to
nation building and in line with our effort to promote the consciousness of selfless
service and human values to society, we launched the SAICARE Programme in
August 2008.
The SAICARE Programme comprised two main categories:
(a) Humanitarian Community Projects
(b) Human Values Projects
One of the primary approaches of the SAICARE Programme is to involve as many
people, especially the youth of society, who are the future leaders of our nation,
in selfless community work and in activities that can help raise awareness of the
importance of human values. This is the only way for us to create a caring society
and to help fulfil Vision 2020.
“Establishing a fully caring society and a caring culture social
system in which the welfare of the people will revolve around a
strong and resilient family system and not around the state or the
individual.”
Malaysia’s Vision 2020

SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
The SAICARE Programme was a two year programme organised in conjunction with
the 85 th Birthday of Bhagavan Sathya Sai Baba.
The SAICare programme involved the implementation of several service, human
values, spiritual and youth projects over two years as our offering for Humanity and
Nation Building. SAI-CARE focused on two important aspects. They were:-
Integration
Each project was to be driven by multi-racial teams headed by a Project Leader
who reported to the respective Wing leader. The programme involved not only
members of the centres but also the public. The programs offered were to be taken
as an opportunity to connect with :
a) Inter –religious groups
b) Ethnic associations
c) Community leaders
d) Residents’ associations
e) Institutions of learning
Hence through this integration the vision that a Sai centre should blend and integrate
with the community could be achieved. Through our sincere efforts in this
programme, Sai centres would become instrumental in triggering and expanding
consciousness by enabling public participation.
Internalization
Whilst it was important to achieve the intended target for all the respective projects
within SAI-CARE programme, the more important aspect was to continuously dwell
on the inner significance of the projects, the purpose and the transformational
experiences one could have by engaging in these worthwhile projects. It is necessary
to continue focusing our attention on our inner consciousness. We should have
constant feed back sessions through healthy satsanghs to gauge our inner
transformation. An evaluation form for self assessment was provided for this purpose.
This evaluation form presented questions such as
(1) How often do you get angry ?
(2) How earnest are you in wanting to learn, imbibe and practise Swami’s teachings ?
(3) How often do you meditate ?
and many others, for discussion and feed back. This spiritual dimension of the SAICare
project is the most important aspect of the programme. The transformational
experiences of members of the organization or centres who have gained during this
programme was documented including the miraculous nature on how the universe
responds in achieving the targets.
The 2 “I” s of the programme : Integration and Internalization would be the two eyes
that would provide a refined vision to achieve what Bhagavan Baba says:
“If a wave of service sweeps over the land, catching everyone in its enthusiasm, it will
be able to wipe out the mounds of hatred, malice and greed that infest the world”.
- Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

3. Objectives
SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
The SAI-Care Programme had a three-pronged aim to bring about:
(a) Positive Changes in the Individual
(b) Resulting in a harmonious Community and
(c) A peaceful and prosperous Nation
These objectives are also in line with those of Malaysia’s Vision 2020:
“Establishing a fully caring society and a caring culture social
system in which the welfare of the people will revolve around a
strong and resilient family system and not around the state or
individual”.
Malaysia’s Vision 2020
In addition, the specific Projects under the SAICare Programme each had their
own specific objectives. These are described below.
A. Spiritual Projects
1. Chanting of Gayathri Mantra
All devotees were to undertake this personal sadhana as an offering to Swami
for His physical wellbeing and to minimize world suffering. The awareness of
the power of prayer would be enhanced among devotees, thereby
increasing the devotees’ consciousness and the “Constant Integrated
Awareness” of Bhagavan’s presence. Eventually all devotees would have
cultivated the habit of daily prayer, which is part of the First Code Of Conduct,
as a personal sadhana.
2. Stress Management – Public Meditation Sessions
• To create awareness on the practice and benefits of meditation
and thereby encourage devotees and public to practise
meditation.
• Experiencing peace of mind as part of natural phenomenon, while
facing the challenges of day to day life at all levels.
3. Journey to Sai
By this self-evaluation exercise, it is hoped that all will radiate His Divine Love at
all times and realize He is the indweller within all. Thus, at the end of 2010, in all
the Sai Centres it is hoped to have at least twice the number of devotees we
currently have.
Devotees will also be able to gauge their spiritual progress on a periodic basis,
thereby helping them to keep moving forward in their sadhana.

SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
4. Yathra to Prashanti (2011) – Practising Swami’s Teachings
To undertake a physical journey to Prashanti, in conjunction with Swami’s 85 th
Birthday, to offer at Bhagavan’s Lotus feet the Projects carried out under the
Sai Care Programme over the 2 year period 2008-2010. This will be symbolic of
the inward journey that devotees would have travelled through their
participation in the various Sai Care Projects.
B. SocioCare Projects
1. Community Adoption Program
• To provide relief and help in the eradication of hardcore poverty.
• To assist in the economic and social upliftment of the residents in poor
areas.
• To provide education support for the youth & children.
• To promote better neighbourliness – a spirit of caring and sharing amongst
the residents.
• To promote inter-racial and inter-religious harmony amongst the residents.
• To promote family unity – i.e. greater bonding and inter-action between
parents and children (teenagers and young adults).
• To promote healthy and wholesome activities for the youth.
• To promote the awareness of the importance of Traditions, Religion,
Aspiration and Culture (TRAC) in overcoming the social ills of today.
Our strategy should be to give the residents what they need so that they
would want what we want to give them. Our attempt was to see if we could
bring the residents, especially the youth, into a value oriented lifestyle so that
they become useful to themselves, their families and the community.
In the process, participating devotees should be able to develop love and
care for their fellow man, and through this, spiritual upliftment.
2. Shelter Project (Rebuilding dilapidated homes of the poor)
This project seeks to provide material and willing hands to repair the roofs and
walls of 85 houses for the benefit of the poor and needy, to provide adequate
shelter and protection from the elements. Devotees participating will be able
to develop love and empathy through this service.

The participants in these projects can be expected to develop love and care for
animals, and recognise animals as part of the divine creation.
C. MediCare Projects
men, women and children
• To bring the above problems to the attention of the Ministry by
submitting the survey forms and the relevant reports
• To provide free specialist medical screening to the hardcore poor (who
normally do not have access to such care) and help to provide
donation. Donating blood not only helps the recipient but also helps the
donor to regenerate new blood in the body.
• To create and cascade information on donating blood and its benefits
• To create opportunities for centres & bhajan units & individuals to gain
experience in managing such projects/events .
• The public must have minimum awareness of blood donation and ever
ready to help/donate if his/her blood is needed to save a life.
E. EnvironCare Projects
1. Tree Planting
The objective of this project is to instill reverence to Mother Nature and raise
Environmental Awareness/Consciousness in particular amongst children, their
parents and teachers of the Sai family in Malaysia. To do this a target has
been set to plant and protect 85,000 trees in Malaysia. Tree planting and its
protection will benefit not only humans but the planet earth. This is because
trees are oxygen filters (they give us oxygen, consumes carbon dioxide and
cleans the air in the process), shelter and food providers to humans as well as
animals and can influence climate. Planting trees can help to combat climate
change and reduce the effects of natural disasters. These are just some of the
major benefits of tree planting and protection.
Participants in this project will learn to appreciate mother nature and
spiritualise their contribution towards making the earth a more liveable place.

SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
4. Origins of SAICare
In 2005 the Sathya Sai Central Council of Malaysia drafted a Road Map for the Sai
Organisation of Malaysia. The purpose of this Road Map was to guide the members
of the organisation to focus on the areas of Service and Spiritual need , and carry out
activities in line with this. This would also offer opportunities for the devotees to serve
the poor, sick, needy and underprivileged, while at the same time moving towards
greater spiritual heights in line with Bhagavan’s Mission for devotees to realise their
inner divinity.
In Nov 2006, the Executive Council of the Sathya Sai Baba Central Council
deliberated a review of the Road Map. It was decided that a review was necessary,
to assess the achievements thus far, and also to identify required programmes
(strategies/initiatives), the implementation action plan and the desired results with set
measurable goals. After this continual evaluation, identification of gaps and review,
the programmes would be carried out.
The need for clear communication, inspiration and education for Centre leaders was
also stressed, as a means of leadership development.
This led to many intense efforts, led by dedicated leaders, to evaluate weaknesses
and problems, issues on integration between wings and the need to spiritualise all
activities, in order to enable devotees to be more spiritually minded. After looking at
these, 4 Key Focus areas were identified, and a workshop for effective leadership for
Sai Office bearers was held.
The task force set up for this purpose worked hard over the next few months, and in
August 2008, a retreat for Sai office bearers was held , in which participants
enthusiastically expressed full support for the SAI Care programme to be
implemented over the next two years as our offering for Humanity and Nation
Building in conjunction with Bhagawan Baba’s 85 th birthday.
A SAICare coordinating team was set up, with National and State level Project
leaders with their own terms of reference. The modus operandi would include:
• A dossier comprising of the mechanics of implementation of each of the
project to be given to state and centre leaders
• An executive committee comprised of VP’s and Wing leaders to oversee
the implementation of the SAI CARE programme.
• The respective VPs to periodically call for meeting with project leaders in
order to assess the effectiveness of the implementation of the projects.
• At every EXCO meeting, the progress is to be reported and monitored so
that we can update during subsequent council meetings.

SAI-CARE
awareness of the power of prayer will be enhanced among devotees, thereby increasing
the devotees’ consciousness of the “Constant Integrated Awareness” of Bhagavan’s
presence. Eventually all devotees would have cultivated daily prayer, which is part of the
First Code Of Conduct, as a personal sadhana.
SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
5. PROJECT OUTCOME
As at the end of the SaiCare Programme period, the total number of Gayatri Chanting done
by the various Centres throughout Malaysia is 26,465,000. This has exceeded the target of 25
million which was set at the beginning of the SaiCare Programme.
The Gayatri Chanting Programme has greatly increased the awareness of the power of
prayer, and the number of devotees chanting the mantra has increased dramatically.
Gayatri Mantra chanting sessions have been held in Centres, Temples, and homes as well as
for the sick. During such sessions, explanations of the Mantra and its power have been
explained.
Public awareness has also been raised through Public sessions such as the one held in
Penang, where Gayatri Mantra was chanted 108 X 5 rounds by more than 350 devotees and
members on public on 29 Aug 2010. Besides chanting, there were talks on the Gayatri
Mantra.
Comments from participants:
1. “Please organise this event more often.”
2. “Based on the talk during the event, I was able to go home and explain to my
daughter why she may not experience the benefits immediately.”
3. “Felt very good during chanting the Gayatri together”
Gayatri Chanting - A gift to Bhagawan Baba on His 85 th Birthday
One of the Spiritual activities (sadhana) undertaken by all devotees was Gayatri Chanting. It
was initiated to create an awareness of its importance and make it an integral part of regular
sadhana at individual, family and community level. Nationwide target was set at 25 million by
August 2010 and all were notified to report the number of chanting for monitoring.
Since the inception on 1 st September 2008, great achievement was noted in this activity.
Activities for promotion
• A circular was sent to all Centres followed by visit to most of the states explaining the
importance of Gayatri Chanting.
• Printed booklets in English, Chinese and Tamil that contained Bhagawan Baba’s
answers for questions relating to Gayatri were distributed free.
• CDs of Gayatri chanting by Bhagawan were made available throughout the country
to ensure chanting was done with uniformity and correct pronunciation.
• Centres organized study circles on Gayatri chanting that created greater awareness.
• Circulars were sent to all Centres to observe world Gayatri day and usher 2010 with
Gayatri Chanting.
Achievement
• Many devotees have taken this sadhana with enthusiasm and are doing it regularly.
• The meter of chanting is understood and all follow accordingly.
• Regular chanting at individual and family level is on the rise.
• Centres have organized weekly sessions.
• Chanting in individual homes upon request is spreading fast among the public.
• Most Centres have increased the number of chants after bhajans.
• Meetings are commenced with Gayatri chanting .
• The projected number of chanting is expected to exceed by about 30%.
Conclusion
Gayatri chanting with understanding of the meaning has become an important sadhana for
most devotees. It has created such an impact that the devotees are expected to continue to
carry on this sadhana beyond Swami’s 85 th Birthday. Everyone is increasingly aware that
regular Gayatri chanting will help to heal the world from the current predicament.
meditation is and how to undertake meditation as a spiritual sadhana.
Activities for promotion
• Meditation workshops lasting about 6 hours each time, were organised throughout the
nation with explanations on what meditation is and practical sessions on the three
stages of meditation which is concentration, contemplation and meditation.
• Question and answer sessions with devotees after each practical session on each of
the three stages of meditation were covered. Further questions and answer sessions
towards the end of the workshop to clear any doubts or for participants to ask
anything at all regarding meditation.
Achievement
• The national target is to have 20 workshops by 31/8/10.
1. INTRODUCTION
Currently in Malaysia, we have about 3,500 devotees formally registered and
participating in organizational activities. Thousands of others who are aware of
Bhagavan Baba have not associated with the organization. Bhagavan has come with
a mission to awaken the Consciousness in man and to bring peace and harmony to
the world. Every devotee has a role to play in His mission. It can be only achieved if
one truly believes that he/she is a chosen one. Baba says, “You are the other arm of
the scissors”. Therefore, self-transformation is a must in order to be a worthy instrument
in His Hands.
2. OBJECTIVE
To facilitate and encourage every individual to realize one’s own innate Divinity by,
• Constantly being conscious of purifying thought, word and deed;
• Being aware of one’s strengths and weaknesses;
• Radiating Divine Love at all times;
• Expansion of Consciousness
It is hoped that all will radiate His Divine Love at all times and realize He is the indweller
within all. As a result, by Bhagavan’s 85 th Birthday, it is hoped to have at least twice the
number of devotees we currently have in Sai Centres.
Devotees will also be able to gauge their spiritual progress on a periodic basis, thereby
helping them to keep moving forward in their sadhana.
3. IMPLEMENTATION
1. A copy of this evaluation form shall be made available to everyone who comes to
any Sai Centre.
2. The Chairman shall make announcements from time to time and encourage all
devotees to participate in this exercise.
3. Devotees shall be advised to take time to fill the form and be truthful.
4. The filled out form shall be put in an envelope and sealed. Next evaluation date
and ‘Journey to Sai’ is written on the envelope and placed at the family alter.
4. Individuals must repeat the evaluation as per the date mentioned in the form, while
trying to fulfil the requirements.
5. By the end of 4 th evaluation, if one has made even a slightest progress, it calls for
celebration by making a pilgrimage to Puttaparthi to attend Swami’s 85th Birthday.
6. It is recommended only those who participate in this ‘Self-Evaluation exercise’ and
‘Sai-Care’ projects, qualify to participate as a pilgrim to Prashanti, in 2010.

SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
4. EXPECTED OUTCOME
1. Love and Unity projected by the devotees should increase the number of devotees
coming to the Centres.
2. More members of the public will become aware of Baba and His Message.
3. Good inter-faith harmony with Sai being an ally to all.
4. At least 850 devotees who have participated in this exercise and involved in Sai-
Care projects to make a pilgrimage to Bhagavan’s 85 th birthday celebrations in
Puttaparthi.
5. OUTCOME
The Journey to Sai Yatra was held in February 2011. A total of nearly 800 people
participated.

Bhagawan Baba says,
“Now we are developing superficial understanding and outer vision. But it is the
inner vision that is important; it alone is true and sacred. We lose sight of the one
reality, of our own Truth because we pay attention only to the impermanent outer
vision and forget completely the permanent inner vision. God’s mission is to restore
this sacred inner vision. That is what He does when He comes as Avatar”
B. 1. Community Adoption Program
Project Reference : Service
Project Name : Community Adoption Programme
Programme (Wing) Leader : Bro Mahendran
Project Leader : Bro Ravindran
Members : Bro. K.O. Ravi
: Bro. Andrew Leong
1. Introduction
There exist in various parts of our country, pockets of communities where there are
hard-core poor and where the residents are living in poverty. This may be in the rural
as well as urban areas. Generally these are also the areas where there are high
incidents of social problems, illiteracy and a high crime rate. Lately Swami has been
focusing on this type of project in India.
2. Objective
1. To provide relief and help in the eradication of hardcore poverty.
2. To assist in the economic and social upliftment of the residents.
3. To provide education support for the youth & children.
4. To promote better neighbourliness – a spirit of caring and sharing amongst the
residents.
5. To promote inter-racial and inter-religious harmony amongst the residents.
6. To promote family unity – i.e. greater bonding and inter-action between
parents and children (teenagers and young adults).
7. To promote healthy and wholesome activities for the youth.
8. To promote the importance of Traditions, Religion, Aspiration and Culture
(TRAC) which will help in overcoming the social ills of today.
Our strategy should be to give the residents what they need so that they would want
what we want to give them. Our attempt was to bring the residents, especially the
youth, into a value oriented lifestyle so that they become useful to themselves, their
families and the community.
3. Implementation
The CAP initiative creates lasting benefits for a community staying in rural
environments, e.g. estates, villages, kampong, low cost flats or a settlement which lack
the basic facilities found in most modern households. A CAP programme should have
one regular programme from each of the three categories listed below.
EDUCARE
• STAR (Student Training in Attitude and Responsibility)
• Free Tuition.
• Public Youth Program

SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
• Parenting
• Values for Nation (Song and Drama Festival)
• EHV Classes.
• ROSE (Reaching Out in Speaking English)
MEDICARE
• Programme to promote health awareness and good hygiene practices
• Highlighting the dangers of drug/alcohol abuse and smoking
• Blood donation campaigns
• Bone marrow and organ donation pledges
• Medical Screening and Specialist Camps.
• Promoting the benefits of a vegetarian diet
• Teach the residents in First –aid and CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation)
• Counselling.
SOCIOCARE
• Encourage young adults engage in community service projects.
• Assisting the elderly and the infirm.
• Leadership development
• Assisting the poor and the handicapped with food, clothing and education
• Disaster relief
• Legal aid
• Games and sports activities
• Cottage industries
• Environment care
To qualify, the average monthly income of the family should be below RM 1000. This
could include families in either rural or urban areas.
However, the yardstick of average monthly income of RM 1000-00 per family must be
used with discrimination! A bachelor with $1000-00, a family of 2 with $1000-00 and a
family of 5, 6 or 7 with $1000-00 are completely different dimensions!
Also a family of husband and wife with 3 children (family of 5) and a family with
husband/wife and one child and two elderly parents (possibly sick) is another
dimension. A family of 3 (husband/wife) with one crippled child is yet another
dimension. The cut-off of $1000-00 will be tempered with the quality of human
compassion and help extended on a needs basis.
Implementation of Programme
Once the area has been identified, the following proposed modules or activities could
be undertaken by Sai Centres depending on the needs of the residents as well as the
human resources and the ability of the Sai Centre concerned:
(a)
Immediate Relief to Hardcore Poor
the neighbourhood. An avenue to dispose used goods, with
income generated utilized to organize programmes for the
children. The children and youth to be involved in this programme.
• To set up playground and library for the youth
(c)
individual/personal hygiene, child-care and the importance of
maintaining the cleanliness of their surroundings. Stress on the
importance of hygiene, clean potable water and the cleanliness
of the utensils used to cook.

SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
• Health awareness programme for women eg: nutrition, breast
B. 2. Shelter Project (Rebuilding dilapidated homes of the poor)
Project Reference : Service
Project Name : Shelter Project
Programme (Wing) Leader : Bro Mahendran
Project Leader : Bro Kiri
1. Introduction
We live in a country that has been blessed with good life for most. Nevertheless there
are pockets within our country where our brothers and sisters are less fortunate. They
have not benefited the bounties that we have had for so long and which we had
taken for granted.
The greatest gift that we can offer for Bhagavan Baba’s 85th birthday is to do
something of permanent benefit for these less fortunate people. There are poor
families living in houses with broken and leaky roofs and walls, who can lead a better
life if we can provide them with an improved home.
2. Objective
This project seeks to provide material and willing hands to repair the roofs and walls of
85 houses for the benefit of the poor and needy, to provide shelter and protection
from the elements. Devotees participating will have an opportunity to develop love
and empathy through this service.
3. Implementation
• Letters will be sent to all centre chairman and state coordinators throughout
the country to inform them of this noble project.
• Guidelines will be issued as to the criteria for selection. Please see attachment
on methodology, which can be used as a guideline.
• Final decision will be left to the Centre Chairman.
• Finance will be left to the Centres to manage. (In exceptional cases, an
appeal can be made to the Council).
• Letters will be sent to welfare departments (Jabatan Kebajikan) throughout the
country informing them of this project and requesting them to identify cases
that need major & minor repair.
4. Expected Outcome
• To provide a better life for poor families by repairing their houses and giving
them a better home to live in.
• Create a caring and loving society.
• Sai Children and Youths to experience the living challenges of the less
fortunate.
• Transformation of the self and the infusion (and spreading) of spirituality and
prema in participating devotees.

Shelter Project - Refurbishing Home of Mr. Guna’s Family
Project Location: Lee Rubber Estate, Senai, Johor
“ A house belonging to a family of seven (parents and 5 kids between the ages of 13
months to 7 yrs) was
refurbished as part of the Shelter Project initiative. The original plan of this Shelter
Project was to provide drains around the rear of the house to remove water which
was discharged from the kitchen and bathroom away from the home. We found
stagnant water from the kitchen and bathroom outside the house which was a
breeding ground for mosquitoes and other vermin. Water for domestic use was being
piped directly from a pond located just outside the home via an old pump which
used to malfunction ever so often. A water tank was built to collect rain water and
this was supplemented by a new suction pump taking water from the same pond.
More than 20 volunteers gathered at this humble home in the rubber estate of Senai
to carry out the work that was planned. The youths and male adults painted the
entire house (exterior and interior). We also installed new doors for the bathroom and
toilet as they were in a state of disrepair and were falling off their hinges. We installed
a spare wooden door for one of the bedrooms and installed a new prayer altar in
the family hall.

Shelter Project in Peramu, Pahang
Pn Hapsah bt Osman is 68 years. Her husband had passed away. She lives alone with
a great grand son. She is not employed.
The house is located at the fringes of a Malay village. It is a single room hut on raised
short stilts. The house is a wooden structure put together with wood and plywood
from another broken house. The house looked dilapidated.
Zinc sheets were used to replace the attap above the open air living area so that the
room could be used in any weather. The walls of the bathroom and toilet areas were
completely replaced on three sides adjacent to the rear door of the house to
provide a comfortable, safe and private entry to use the facilities. New zinc sheets
were used. New beams and pillars were erected to hold a proper roof to keep away
the rain and the sun. The floor of the bathroom-cum-toilet was rendered in cement. A
new toilet bowl was affixed and piping was placed to take way the sewage.
This case was brought to the attention of the Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Kuantan by
the Persatuan Kebajikan Rakan India (PKRI) and it was agreed that the two parties
work together to rebuild this home. Seven members of the PKRI and 8 Sai volunteers
took part in the repair exercise.

B. 3. Adoption of Poor Families
Project Reference : Service
Project Name : Poor Families Project
Programme (Wing) Leader : Bro Mahendran
Project Leader : Bro Mohana
1. Introduction
There exists in various parts of our country, pockets of communities where there are
hard-core poor and where the residents are living in poverty. This may occur in the
rural as well as urban areas. Generally these are also the areas where there are high
incidents of social problems, illiteracy and a high crime rate.
2. Objective
a) To provide relief and help in the eradication of hardcore poverty.
b) To assist in the economic and social upliftment of the residents.
c) To provide education support for the youth & children.
Through the participation of devotees in this project, love and care for the less
fortunate can be nurtured.
3. Implementation
Potential recipients shall be families with average income below RM 1000-00 and who
are living in poverty. This may be in the rural as well as in the urban areas.
(However, the poverty line of RM 1000-00 family income must be seen with
discrimination. A bachelor with $700-00, a family of 2 with $700-00 and a family of 5, 6
or 7 with $700-00 are different dimensions.)
Also a family comprising husband and wife and 3 children (family of 5) and a family
with husband/wife and one child and two elderly parents (possibly sick) is another
dimension. Also a family of 3 (husband/wife) and one crippled child...is yet another
dimension. So the poverty line of $1000-00 should be tempered with compassion and
help extended on a need basis.
4. Expected Outcome
a. To relieve the financial burden of poor and needy families
b. Opportunity for devotees to project love and work with unity .
c. Expose more members to participate in service programmes.
d. Build interfaith harmony through service among all races

was no proper shelter for the dogs in the estate.
A dog kennel in the form of a long-house with 7 individual cells was completed. The
kennel was built in the Sg. Plentong palm oil plantations where the 30 stray dogs are
looked after by Josephine and her Uncle on a voluntary basis. Josephine requested a
shelter for the dogs from the sun and rain and also from humans that have ill-treated
these dogs all their lives. After seeing the condition of the dogs and the sincere
selfless love that Josephine and her Uncle have for these strays, we simply could not
refuse.

A 20 year old 3 rd year medical student was suffering from lower abdominal distention
and pain. Due to her family’s financial constraints, surgery assistance was extended
to her. A cystectomy was done, with refashioning of the fimbrial end of the fallopian
tube and a tubal patency test was done, in view of future fertility. The doctor could
hear her call out to Swami while she was recovering from anesthesia, asking him not
to go. She was discharged on the 3 rd day. The diagnosis was a large fimbrial cyst.
A 23 years old Malay single mother, who has no family support, came to our labour
room in active phase of labour. Few hours later we had to do caesarean section on
her because of foetal distress. Mother and baby are well. Baby is adopted by a
childless couple and the mother was sent back to the home.
A Malay house wife, whose husband is a manual labourer, was in her 4 th pregnancy
at 38 weeks. Admitted because of high blood pressure and Bronchial asthma. We
offered assistance because of domestic problems and due to financial constraints.
We operated her because of big baby. She delivered a 3.9 kg baby. Both mother
and baby are well now.
A 40 year old Myanmar lady at 38 weeks pregnant came in with fibroid complicating
pregnancy, hypertension and Breech presentation. She was operated on because of
breech presentation and the above problems. She is not working and husband’s
income is less than RM 600.
The Surgery project under SaiCare is another success story for our Sai organization, for
having made valuable connections with the Ministry of Health through the Obstetric
and Gynaecology Department of Hospital Kuala Lumpur. This is the biggest tertiary
hospital which receives referrals from all over Malaysia. They acknowledged
the Saicare surgery project done in their respective wards by giving an appreciation
ceremony to our Sai Council members on May 6th. Several members from our
organization including brothers and sisters came for this function, attended by a total
of 132 people. The unique feature of this event was the respect and the acceptance
of our Saicare project by the multiracial group present. This showed the true unity in
the midst of diversity. They were very impressed with our Saicare surgery project. Two
patients spoke and thanked the Sai Council for the assistance. The hospital
authorities pledged continued support in the following areas:
1. Complete support to maternal and child health service programme of our
organization.
2. Agreed to send hospital staff in batches for tree planting sessions.
3. Medical Camps
4.Community integrated programmes to help the needy women in the society
5. They requested us to form an emotional support group to help the cancer patients
in the gynaecology ward.

REPORT ON THE EYE SURGERY PROJECT
With Blessings of Bhagavan Baba, The Eye Care Services under the SAI CARE PROGRAMME
were extended to not only the needy members of the public but also to the members of
Welfare Homes like Rumah Sri Kenangan, Pusat Perlindungan Kanak- Kanak, Jubilee Home,
Taman Sinar Harapan, Long Hua Home and some privately run charity homes in Johor Bahru.
We have extended our services also to poor foreign nationals and refugees like the Rohingya
group.
During the period November 2008 to April 2010, we have done 51 (Fifty one) Eye surgeries and
provided free outpatient treatment on 565 occasions.
We have provided Free Cataract Surgeries with Implantation of Intraocular lens to 51 eyes
belonging to 45 patients. These patients will continue to be followed up on an outpatient
basis for the rest of their lives and medicines and often glasses are provided free of cost.
As an ongoing service we have been providing Surgical and Eye Care Services free of cost to
the members of the Rohingya Group (Refugees from Myanmar officially given asylum in
Malaysia). In this venture we are ably assisted by the members of several Buddhist
associations in Johor especially for home visits and transportation of patients for surgeries and
follow up.
The Rotary Club of Pasir Gudang, under their Vision Project, has been, as in the previous years,
is extending their help in the form of providing the intraocular lens and the disposables used
for Cataract Surgeries. During the period mentioned above they have supported materials for
40 Cataract Surgeries.
Our Sai Volunteer Eye Specialist has set aside Thursday afternoon sessions of her clinic
especially for this service. Most of the review cases that need the help of volunteers for
transport are seen on Saturday mornings for the convenience of the volunteers.
We thank all those who are involved in this noble and on-going service especially the Rotary
Club of Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru Malayalee Association and the various Buddhist
Associations in Johor Bahru in addition to our own sevaks from all over the State of Johor.

C. 3. General Medical Health Screening
Project Reference : Service
Project Name : Medical Health Screening
Programme (Wing) Leader : Bro Mahendran
Project Leader : Bro Rajoo
1. Introduction
Sai Centres throughout Malaysia have been organizing Medical Camps for a long
time. However, the effectiveness of these camps leave much to be desired. Swami
says, “God will not ask you, when and where did you do service? He will ask with what
motive did you do it? You may boast of its quantity but God seeks quality, the quality
of the heart, the purity of the mind, the holiness of the motive”.
There are a lot of people from the low income group who are unable to travel to
Hospitals due to lack of support from family etc. to seek treatment. Sai Care is
determined to address such situations and go the extra mile in giving “care” to the
patients in need of help.
2. Objective
To provide free medical screening to the hardcore poor (who normally do not
undertake routine medical screening) and help to provide basic medical needs. At
the same time some with health problems may also be identified and
recommendation for follow up be given, such as surgery, consulting specialists, etc.
3. Implementation
The Medical Screening Camp will make 2 approaches in implementing this project:
1) AWARENESS - Through medical screening such as checks for Blood Pressure, Blood
Sugar, Pap Smear etc. and health education, society can become “AWARE” of
Medical and Health Problems.
2) AFTER CARE – Providing assistance in seeking right treatment and related services
to patients by following up after screening.
1. The Centre will identify areas for holding of Medical Screening Camp
(MSC) and work with the local community leaders from different races.
2. The MSC need not be confined to rural areas. They can be organized in
shopping complexes, houses of worship, industrial & manufacturing plants,
societies & associations etc. in line with our objectives.
3. The MSC will operate in similar manner as Medical Camps, except that
there will be no Medical Specialists. However where possible, MSC may be
combined with Specialist Medical Camps .
4. Centres must make provision to enter all data from the Registration Form
and store in a database so as to facilitate follow up services. All information
obtained must be treated as strictly confidential. Only authorized persons
will be allowed to access the information.

SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
5. After Care Services should be organized with the follow up visits to find out
the status of cases referred to Hospitals for treatment and related services.
Efforts should be made by Sai Care Team to visit individuals and families
that need help and assist in whatever ways possible such as taking the
poor patients to Hospital and accompanying to the respective clinic etc.
till treatment is obtained.
6. MSC can be organized in association with CAP, Specialist Medical Camp,
Blood Donation etc. Centres can also incorporate other projects such as
Organ Donation Pledge, Wheel Chair Donation, Dentures Project etc into
the MSC.
7. Medical & Health Talks should be organized and presented in the
language people in the location can understand. If possible A/V facilities
should be made available. First Aid and CPR training could also be
arranged with the co-operation of the Red Crescent and St. John’s
ambulance.
8. Medical Pamphlets in all major languages should be distributed to Public.
Pamphlets can be obtained from Health Department & Drug Companies
with the help of Doctors who are allied with Sai Medicare Projects.
9. All reports from Centres must be forwarded in the prescribed form through
respective state co-ordinators to the National Sai Care Service Project
Leader after the completion of the project for compilation and
presentation to Bhagavan as a Gift for His 85 th Birthday.
4. Expected Outcome
1. To help members of the society, aware of any impending medical problems
and take early remedial / preventive action.
2. To educate society to live a Healthy Life.
3. To reduce medical & health ignorance, in particular among the poor, and
help them to lead a quality and productive life.

3. Implementation
a) The person requiring assistance should be one who should request and not
relations or family members.
b) Initial liaison and groundwork must be carefully and closely carried out with the
approval and assistance of Centre Chairman and village head to identify the
person. Any medical report available should be accompanied with the
request.
c) The patient’s place of residence, the earning power, family financial position
etc. must be thoroughly examined.
d) It is imperative that the identified recipient and his family members are given a
clear understanding of the process of approval and final decision so that no
false hope can be concluded by any of them.
e) Colour photograph of patient should accompany the application form.
f) Letters will be sent to all Centre Chairmen and state coordinators throughout
the country to inform them of this worthy project. Guidelines will be issued as to
the criteria for selection.
g) Letters will be sent to welfare departments through out the country informing
them of this project and requesting them to identify needy cases.
4. Expected Outcome
The programme is intended to improve the well-being and quality of life of the needy.
5. Project Outcome
The target under SaiCare was to provide dentures for 85 needy persons. However, at
the end of the SaiCare Project period, only a total of 35 dentures could be provided.

C. 5. Blood Donation
Project Reference : Service
Project Name : Blood Donation
Programme (Wing) Leader : Bro Mahendran
Project Leader : Bro Saravanan Kannan
1. Introduction
Many talk about blood donation and its importance. But there are a large number in
the society who are not aware and do not understand the benefits of blood donation.
This unwillingness or “I will not require others’ blood” attitude must be changed. Blood
is something we can share and it is often a deciding factor on life and death. We
often receive many emails and SMS’s which we circulate and forward, but without
any real action being taken by anyone. Through this project, it is hoped that greater
awareness and participation can be assured.
2. Objective :
o
o
o
o
o
o
To encourage devotees and the public to donate blood as liquid love, which
could be used to save lives.
To educate Malaysians from all walks of life on the importance of blood donation.
Donating blood not only helps the recipient but also helps the donor to
regenerate new blood in the body.
To create and cascade information on donating blood and its benefits
To create opportunities for centres, bhajan units and individuals to gain
experience in managing such projects/events .
The public must have minimum awareness of the benefits of blood donation and
be ever ready to help/donate if his/her blood is needed to save a life.
Through blood donation, the devotees and public will be able to recognise that
their body is a gift from God, and by donating their blood, they are expressing their
gratitude to God, while helping someone in need of blood
3. Implementation
• Every centre to organize and conduct blood donation drive at intervals of every 3
months. The venue could be at a nearby publicly accessible location such as
commercial complexes, temples (during major function), army camp, colleges,
University etc
• To obtain the cooperation of youths / adults involved in respective CSR/sports club
in their own company/organization to organize mini/sizeable blood donation
drives in their respective office/company ‘s compound / lobby. This will create an
avenue for new donors.
• Every centre devotee / member must be aware of the requirement of a blood
donor and able to explain and convince new donors on the benefits.
• Centre’s service coordinator to assign “branch manager’ ie one of centre
devotees from various housing estate / “taman” to be in-charge to talk local
residents’ association and organise blood donation drives in the taman
concerned.
• College students from Centres to check and work together with nearby centres to
promote blood donation drive.
4. Expected outcome

Project Reference : Service
Project Name : Organ Donation Pledges
Programme (Wing) Leader : Bro Mahendran
Project Leader : Bro Thava
1. INTRODUCTION
Organ donation can be a difficult subject to think or talk about. Most people do not
want to contemplate their own death. Nor do bereaved relatives find it easy to
decide on donation of the organs of a loved one who has just died. The same goes
for the doctors and nurses who may have fought to save the patient’s life.
2. OBJECTIVES
To create the awareness that every Malaysian is eligible to donate their organs on
death.
Once a person has pledged his organs, it is the relatives’ moral responsibility to ensure
that on his/her death, the pledged organs are extracted by the authorities with least
delay.
3. EXPECTED OUTCOME
1. To have information on the benefit of organ donation cascaded to the general
public
2. To have collected at least 8500 organ donations pledges as a gift for Bhagawan
Baba’s 85 th birthday celebration on 23 Nov 2010
3. Each state to pledge 850 organ donation by 23 Nov 2010
4. PROJECT OUTCOME
Experiences of devotees:
The people pledging their organs feel profoundly happy to have pledged their
organs knowing that the organs would be put to good and meaningful use instead
of going to waste, after death. Many are also happy to know that their organs
could be used to help other people, a quiet feeling of happiness and satisfaction
that the organ recipients would benefit from the good deed.

Mr Maniam’s Family
10 members of the family of Mr. Maniam pledged all their organs and tissues at
convinced that:
“Give my sight to the man who has never sees a sunrise, a baby’s face or love in
the eyes of a woman. Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused
nothing but endless days of pain. Give my kidneys to one who depends on a
machine to exist from week to week. Take my bones, every muscle, every fiber
and nerve in my body and find a way to make a crippled children walk. Explore
every corner of my brain. Take my cells, if necessary, and let them grow so that,
some day, a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a bat and a deaf girl will
hear the sound of rain against her window”
They also requested the State Organ Pledge Coordinator to ensure that every
Organ and Tissue are harvested from them and be given as a GIFT OF LIFE to
needy persons.
Member of Parliament
A lady Muslim Member of Parliament from Desa Mentari requested why I was
doing this Project. I replied that being a Hindu on death my body would be
cremated and that my pair of eyes would be burnt to ashes and instead it should
be donated to two blind people who would see for the rest of their lives and that
my eyes would be alive and useful. She immediately pledged her pairs of eyes.

driving force behind the project (Dev also gave me your email id). Thanks to your
efforts and those of your enthusiastic members, I heard that a record number of
people signed up. This struck me as being so much in the spirit of what Amma
teaches: which is to do as much as we can to help others, especially the needy.
I just wanted to express my appreciation through this email.
Thank you.
1. INTRODUCTION
Speaking is one of the four main language skills for students to be proficient in. As we
advance into the new millennium, students are expected to be able to master at least
two languages, namely Bahasa Malaysia and English. This would make it easier for
them to function as they are able to play a more relevant and functional role in their
daily life. Moreover, in the new millennium, technology too is getting more advanced.
Thus, proficiency in languages becomes a necessity, as one needs to interact with
one another and keep abreast with the latest developments in technology. Through
activities such as public speaking, drama and debate, it is hoped that awareness can
be created among students on the importance of upgrading themselves in language
skills.
The Sathya Sai Baba Central Council of Malaysia will be organising a nationwide
competition under the banner – “Speak up & Act Out”. Each Sathya Sai Baba
Centre/bhajan unit/EHV class will initially conduct impromptu speaking competitions
respectively to choose their representative team(s) of three. This will be followed by a
State Speak Up & Act Out competition. Top team/winner from each state will then
compete at the national level.
2. OBJECTIVE
To promote and project Human Values among teenagers and the community in
general, as a step to stem the decline in Human Values which is leading to a host of
problems for all nations: - drug addiction, lack of respect for parents, promiscuity, etc.
In addition, the self-confidence level of the youths will also be raised through exposure
in such programmes.
The specific objectives of this activity are as follows:
• To encourage the development of oral communication skills among students.
• To instil confidence and courage in expressing one’s creativity and wit.
• To elicit comprehensive knowledge.
• To promote better understanding between young people.
• To create awareness and to learn, document and disseminate the topics

SAI-CARE
3. IMPLEMENTATION
A series of activities will spearhead the competition, namely:
a. Original Oratory:
The contestant speaks about a human values based topic for a given amount of
time. The oration must be original and persuasive. No more than 150 words of
quotes should be included and all quotations must be cited. This speech is
prepared prior to the tournament and the contestant uses the same speech
throughout the entire tournament.
b. Impromptu Speaking:
Two speakers will be chosen from each team. The contestant talks about a given
topic based on everyday human values and reflecting philosophical aspects. The
contestant will have one hour to plan his/her speech. The contestant may jot
down notes, but must not use pre-written notes during the speech.
c. Group Skit:
The entire group to act out an excerpt of a play or a short original piece. No props
or costumes may be used except chairs and a table.
The competition will be held at the following levels:
i) Centres/ Bhajan Units/ EHV classes
ii) State
iii) National

1. INTRODUCTION
Storytelling is one of the five teaching techniques in the Sai Spiritual Education
programme. Sharing and creating a common experience in storytelling aids in the
development of a child's ability to interpret events beyond his immediate experience.
The child's world view is expanded through story experiences in a non-threatening and
loving atmosphere. Therefore storytelling becomes an exceptionally personal
experience.
The Sathya Sai Baba Central Council of Malaysia has been organising nationwide
competitions under the banner – National Human Values Story Telling Competition.
Each Sathya Sai Baba Centre/bhajan unit/EHV class initially conduct story telling
competitions respectively to choose their representatives. This is followed by a State
level competition. Top three winners from each state then compete at the National
level.
2. OBJECTIVE
To promote and project Human Values among SSEHV children and the community in
general, as a step to stem the decline in Human Values which is leading to a host of
problems for all nations: - drug addiction, lack of respect for parents, promiscuity, etc.
In addition, the self-confidence level of children will also be raised through exposure in
such programmes.
The specific objectives of this activity are as follows:
• To encourage practice of human values in everyday living
• To introduce children to oral language patterns (for a child to achieve success in
reading, wide experience with spoken language is needed). This will then
encourage children to get into healthy reading habits and the world of books.
• Story telling develops the children’s listening skills
• Contributes to the social and cognitive development through shared experience
(to feel joy for another’s happiness and empathize with their misfortunes)
1. INTRODUCTION
STAR Programme is meant to help students who are academically weak and have low
self esteem and self-confidence. This intervention programme will serve the need to
uplift their level of self-esteem and self-confidence and thus, achieve excellence in
character and academic performance. It is our fervent hope that these students will
become good responsible citizens of our nation in due course.
2. OBJECTIVE
The main objectives of the programme are to instil in students:-
o The urge and need to succeed and excel academically and in life.
o Self respect and confidence.
o The need and desire to study.
o Effective studying techniques.
o Positive attitude and a sense of responsibility.
o To achieve academic and character excellence.
For the nation
• A change of mindset and attitude to produce positive and responsible
youths which in turn would contribute to the eradication of crime and
other socially unacceptable activities/behaviour.
• Grooming the youths of today to be leaders of tomorrow.
3. IMPLEMENTATION
The plan is to have a continuous STAR Programme, at least one in each state. States to
identify schools which would need the programme and get the approval from the
school, to allow us to conduct the STAR programme. STAR programme is packaged
as 6 month programme, as such it will be ideal to start the programme either in March
or April of each year. STAR Facilitators training will be provided upon request from
each state.
4. EXPECTED OUTCOME
We are targeting to have eight schools throughout the nation with STAR Programme. It
is intended that students involved in this programme will obtain good results in
examinations and at the same time, earn the respect of parents, teachers and fellow
students.

It is exactly a year now since the 2008 Student Training in Attitude and
Responsibility (STAR) motivation session for the Form 5 students of Sri Permute
School in SS3. Although the programme ended halfway through due to
unforeseen events, the memories and experiences are still unforgettable.
Now, we are back again, gaining momentum once again for the 2009 session. We
had a meeting yesterday to finalize the one-day mid term camp for the students.
And as usual, Monty, Vijay and I headed to the restaurant near the SS3 centre
for dinner.
As we entered, we saw a familiar face smiling at us. It was our 2008 STAR
student, having dinner with his parents. So we went over to him, and asked him
what he was doing now.
“I am studying at MAHSA college Anne, doing physiotherapy.”
Then he continued, “Thanks for your help, Anne.”
That was quite a pleasant surprise for us. It was a small reminder to us that the
Lord is watching over them, and us even beyond what we do on a weekly or
monthly basis. We only completed half the STAR session last year, and the Lord
made an impact in that boy’s life through us.
Then he came back to us and said, “Ok Anne, bye. My parents’ already paid for
your food.”
And he left.
That left us with a renewed spirit, not because of the free food, but the encounter
with this small miracle and transformation that we saw.

1. Introduction
We cannot completely reverse the effects of deforestation and global warming, but we can
discover how planting trees can help to combat climate change and reduce the effects of
natural disasters. We can make a difference.
2. Objective
The objective of this project is to instil reverence to Mother Nature and raise Environmental
Awareness/Consciousness in particular amongst children, their parents and teachers of the
Sai family in Malaysia. To do this a target has been set to plant and protect 85,000 trees in
Malaysia. Tree planting and its protection will benefit not only humans but the planet earth.
This is because trees are oxygen filters (they give us oxygen, consumes carbon dioxide and
cleans the air in the process), shelter and food providers to humans as well as animals and
can influence climate. Planting trees can help to combat climate change and reduce the
effects of natural disasters. These are just some of the major benefits of tree planting and
protection.
Participants in this Programme will learn to appreciate mother nature and spiritualise their
contribution towards making the earth a more liveable place.
3. Implementation
Tree seedlings shall be propagated in a spiritually charged environment of our homes and Sai
Centres throughout the country. The trees shall be planted in locations where it will be
welcomed, nurtured and allowed to achieve its full growth potential. These trees shall fulfill
their destiny vis-à-vis providing shade, colour, fragrance and fruits at different stages of their
lives. This project is made up of four phases:
i. Phase 1- Awareness
Lesson plans on life-cycle. For an example it takes 30 to 45 days for leafy
vegetables to grow from seed to the cooking pot! Young children can learn about
how seeds become alive. They also will learn the function and connectivity
between soil, air, water and sunlight. Planting can be spiritualized by Gayathri
chanting. Full-grown plants (organically grown) can be consumed by the family
and given to friends. The children will understand joy of giving.
Older children can work with fruiting vegetables such as pepper (“cili”), tomatoes,
egg-plant (brinjals) and lady-fingers.
ii.
Phase 2 – Family nurseries
Encourage families to nurture tree seedlings in their homes.

SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
Provide the children with poly-bags and compost and followed by the seedlings.
They are to take care of the growth of seedlings for 3 months. Repeat over next 18
months.
Phase 2A
Identify potential planting locations in their neighbourhood, homes, parks or other
public areas.
iii. Phase 3
Planting, recording and monitoring. Work with other organisations, residents
associations.
iv. Phase 4
Develop Voluntary CER processes and Carbon Offset proposals with Sai School as
beneficiary.
4. Expected Outcome
• General understanding about trees and its importance in their surroundings.
• Do’s and Dont’s when they interact with plants.
• Genuine tree planting campaign with long term environmental benefit
• Potential revenue generation for Sai school
5. Project Outcome
Trees for life : Tree Planting project by Muar Sai Centre, Johor.
The Muar Sai Centre planned to plant 1050 trees as part of the SAICare Programme.
Towards this goal, a project to plant trees was undertaken at the Tanjung Ketapang
Park on 22 nd March 2009. A total of 250 Bunga Tanjung Trees ( a flowering tree)
seedlings were bought from a nursery at a very special price of RM2/ plant. The
Project was done in collaboration with the Town Council because we needed their
permission in the first place and we also needed them to help identify the places to
plant the trees. Once planted, the Town Council took over to look after the plants.
11 devotees plus another 6
workers from the Town Council
helped out in the planting.
Town Council also provided a
machine – a backhoe, that
helped dig the holes and a
pick-up truck which carried the
fertilizer.
The project helped establish
good relationship with the
Town Council, as they were
very pleased with what we
were doing and even offered
to provide help such as
fertilizers and equipment. Our
devotees felt good fellowship and happiness and planted the trees in a very short
time.
When we approached the Town Council to get their permission to plant the trees,
they were very happy. They said it was a very good Programme. The Landscaping
Department of the Town Council commented that Bunga Tanjung trees release a
fragrance that will attract the public and tourists and that the size of these trees are
ideal as they are neither too big nor too small.
After we had planted the trees,
the Town Council was very
pleased and grateful that we
had done a good job and they
felt that we should not be the one
to spend on the fertilizer. They
made the decision that the
fertilizer would be on them. Town
Council expressed its hope that
more trees would be planted by
us.
The public was surprised that a
group of people were planting

trees, especially in the light drizzle. They asked where we were from and we told
them. A middle-aged Malay couple doing their rounds of exercise, stopped to
admire and talk to us. They told us that they were very touched that there are still
people who care for the environment. They were so taken in that they spent a
considerable amount of time watching what we were doing.
Our own members were delighted
with the job especially our two new
elderly brothers. There was cheer,
happiness and good fellowship
amongst us as we worked along. The
250 trees were planted in record time!
All our members who took part said
that they did not feel the strain at all
and looked forward to planting more
trees.
Distribution of Manila Palm Tree seeds
Seputeh Bhajan Unit distributed about 6000 Manila Palm Tree seeds plus seedling
bags to over 40 Centres / BU in 5 States of the country. The seeds will be grown by
members for future field planting. Some Gurus provide seeds for the Bal Vikas children
to grow as it will be a good experience for the children to watch the plants growing
from seeds to seedlings and then to trees.
The distribution of the seeds / bags were given out free of charge. All expenses were
borne by Seputih BU. About 100 Palm seedlings were planted in plastic bottles for the
Walk for Values at SS3 in May 09. This was a small project. However, even if we can
only plant a single tree, it is still a contribution for a better world!

Kuala Selangor Peat Swamp Tree Planting Initiative
SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
A team of tireless workers were at the site every week, engaged in this activity.
There were 3 sources of planting material :
1. Wildlings- these had to be dug up individually at Sg Panjang, near Behrang and
planted in polybags. This labour intensive and time consuming task was diligently
done for several weeks but the survival rate was poor.
2. Seeds- These had good germination rate with hot water scarification, and reached
5 leaf stage in 40 days.
3. Cuttings- These too had very good germination rate. Almost unlimited quantity of
right sized wildlings for taking cuttings were available. 10 people could prepare
about 2000 cuttings ready for planting in 3 hours..
The plan was to get all Centre devotees involved in Polybag filling, planting and
nurturing. The devotees were to fill small polybags (5" x 7") with any clean soil and
arrange them so that the bags stay upright. This may be done at Centres’
compounds, if they have space. Devotees can also prepare polybags at their home
gardens.
When the cuttings are ready, they were to be pushed for half its length straight into
the polybag, one cutting per polybag. Then the soil was pressed firmly around its
base. After that, daily watering and Gayatri chanting. .
When the plants are about 45 days old, they have to be spaced out a little so that
they do not touch each other. This will help them grow stronger.
After 90 days , they could be taken to the Raja Musa Peat Forest Reserve for planting.
SAIRAM DEAR CENTRE LEADERS,
The Tree Planting Project team continued to test various methodologies of producing,
planting and nurturing seedlings. By the grace of SWAMI, much progress was made in
identifying the most productive method to carry out this tree planting mission, by
SWAMI's 85th birthday.
The goal was not just to achieve the SAICARE target of planting 85,000 Trees. More
than that is the "Awareness of saving Mother Nature" and having the passion to
create a 'greener' world for the future.
NOW EVERYONE CAN PLANT !
The Forestry Department had allocated an area large enough to plant more than
100,000 trees. 500 were planted on the 3rd of October 2009 during the handing over
ceremony, led by our President, Bro Billy Fong. A signboard erected at the site
mentioned the cooperation between the Selangor Forestry Dept, facilitating NGOs'
and the Sathya Sai Central Council of Malaysia.
From then our volunteers, assisted by local villagers, rangers and GEC made rentices
(walk paths) and pegged the planting points. The Forestry Department delivered the
wildlings to designated points at site.

SAI-CARE
An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building
Although this was a SAI operation, and weekly planting was required, at least 500
committed volunteers were needed to plant each and every plant lovingly. This
meant we must reach out to the public.
For their perseverance, the team was given 2 presents by Swami-
1. 'Marcots' - these are full sized, rooted plants that can be planted straight from
source to the swamp. A total of 8000 marcots were to be planted every month at the
Sg Panjang site.
2. A very small patch along the roadside kept producing wildlings. The team dug
them up and kept them in the Forestry nursery at the same place.

40 members participated in the event. Most of the members came with family
members .
Seedlings – A few members had started raising 2 varieties of ornamental palm trees -
Fox Tail and Manila Palm seedlings from seeds since 20 months ago. We have no
idea of where to plant the seedlings until about early June when we discussed with a
member of the Temple about tree planting. It was then realized that the Temple
needed trees to be planted along the road side and also on the sides of the car-park
and open space.
Preparation work started immediately in early June by a few members in getting the
area to be ready, buying tools and fertilizer. Markings with sticks for planting holes
were done as well.
Early in June 20, more than 40 members gathered at the Temple around 8.30am for a
briefing on what were the trees to be planted and how to plant them. A lorry
delivered about 180 tree seedlings to the temple site. The morning was nice but
getting hot after 10 am. The ground was hard and difficult to dig. The team worked
very hard and by about 11.30 am, about 110 trees were planted. The remaining trees
were planted by some workers a couple of days later.
The Team had lunch at the temple and after a tour of the area for those who were
new to the place, all went back very tired but satisfied!
FEEDBACK
Many have commented that it was a meaningful day where we did something for
the environment! Some have asked when to come back to tender to the plant to
make sure that they grow properly. A date will be fixed in July for members to go
again for ‘maintenance’ work – weeding, ground leveling, watering, removing of
stones, etc.

SHAH ALAM ‘River & trees FOR LIFE’
In response to an article in the STAR METRO dated 4 th JUN 10 titled ‘A NATURE INSPIRED CITY
BECKONS MBSA PLANS TO PLANT 80,000 TREES BY YEAR END’, Sathya Sai Council saw an
opportunity and approached MBSA expressing our intention to collaborate with MBSA to
realize their plan.
The MBSA was quite impressed with our achievements at the on going Raja Musa Peat
Swamp rehabilitation programme being carried out in collaboration with Selangor Forestry
Dept., Global Environment Centre and Eco Warriors.
The proposal was to plant 10,010 trees along the river bank of Sg. Damansara, Section 13,
Shah Alam, to commemorate Shah Alam’s 10 th Anniversary Celebration of its City status. The
city’s 10 th anniversary was on October 10 th .
Later we learned that it was a wonderful coincidence that we approached MBSA at the right
time with the tree planting proposal while they were in the midst of preparing various activities
and carnivals involving community based groups to celebrate its 10 th Anniversary.
The 1 st planting session was held on Sunday the 26 th September 2010. Approximately 480
volunteers from MBSA, JPS, DHL, UKM, UITM, Tailors College, Rotary Club of PJ and Sathya Sai
Bros/Sisters took part in the event. The planting session started at 9am and by 11.30am the
volunteers managed to plant nearly 3,000 plants. It was indeed a remarkable feat.
The 2 nd planting programme was held on Sunday the 3 rd October 2010. More than 140
volunteers from MBSA, JPS, UKM, UITM, Tailors College and Sathya Sai Organisation took part
and planted approximately 2,00 plants between 9am to 11.30am.
It is not the number of plants we plant, but the opportunity it offers in terms of fellowship,
interaction among various communities that is remarkable.

SAICARE
– A project of Continuing Benefit to Malaysian Society
The Saicare project was carried out from the end of 2008 up to 2010.
Although the project period ended by Bhagavan’s 85 th Birthday in
November 2010, many projects have established themselves as continuing
projects.
As of Swami’s 85 th Birthday, the achievements of the various components
of the SaiCare Project were as in the table below.
The projects carried out under SaiCare enabled an effective reaching out
to the community. A large number of NGOs, Government departments,
local Residents Associations and other bodies worked with the Sai
organization in these projects.
One of the SAI Care Projects, namely TREES FOR LIFE attracted
participation from many Corporate entities and University students.
The Walk for Values events held in many parts of the country too facilitated
the interaction of the Sai Organisation with local NGOs and residents,
schools and so on. This has now laid the foundation for future activities in
collaboration with these bodies.
The many medical screening camps and specialist medical camps held all
over the country were particularly recognized by the Health Ministry in
Kuala Lumpur.
Hospital Kuala Lumpur administrative team invited 8 NGOs from Selangor
and Wilayah Persekutuan (Federal Territory) to put up booths in the hospital
lobby showing environmental care, social and Medicare projects. The aim
was to increase public awareness on various service activities of NGOs. The
Sai Organization was among those NGOs. We had a reasonably large
booth which could highlight all our service activities.
A large number of medical personnel were impressed by the activities of
the Sai Organisation, and wanted to be a part of our Medicare team.
Besides this, another NGO, Medicine Sans Frontieres, and International
Disaster Relief organization also expressed interest in joining the Sai
Organisation in carrying out service activities.

Gift of Sight Project
Another follow up project which was born out of the SaiCare Project was the “Gift
of Sight” eye surgery programme. The Rotary club received a grant from CIMB
foundation for doing eye surgeries for Malaysian citizens. The Sai Medicare team is
to collaborate with the Rotary Club, Ophthalmology Department of General
Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, Ton Hussein Eye Hospital and CIMB foundation.
CONCLUSION
The real outcomes & Impact of Sai Care projects is in the Integration &
internalization of the Seva and other activities by the participants.
Tremendous transformation took place not only among the Sai devotees,
but also the recipients and others who were involved directly or indirectly.
Various people were touched and experienced Bhagavan through the Sai
Care Projects.
It is important to focus on the achievements and continue the seva
activities based on local needs. This will surely lead to permanent benefit
for the people, while elevating the Sai devotees who are involved
spiritually.
