One of Geneva’s most impressive events of the
year. Organized for the first time in 1939, the
Bol d’Or has since become the most important
inland regatta in the world with more than 3,000
participants. Europe’s largest lake sailing race
is always a spectacular event. A true nautical
festival and the top rendezvous for lovers of
sailing, the Bol d’Or Mirabaud is now one of
the grand classics in the international racing
calendar. Each year sailing champions from
across Europe meet at the starting line in Geneva
– in the company of 600 sailboats – and race
across 76 miles to Le Bouveret and back.
ST. PETER’S CATHEDRAL, OLD TOwN
THE ‘ESCALADE’ CELEBRATION
DECEMBER 9-11, 2011
Address: Old Town, Geneva
Website: www.1602.ch
The Escalade Celebration is a commemoration
of the heroic victory of the Genevans against
invading Savoyan troops on 12 December 1602.
Hailed as one of the most beautiful historical
festivals in Europe, the parade is formed entirely
of volunteer members of the Geneva Historical
Society. Dressed in period costume, participants
commemorate the victims of that tragic
December night with exuberant re-enactments
of duels and music recitals. The celebration
reaches a crescendo with a massive bonfire
party in front of St. Pierre Cathedral.
