Friday 26th May ´06 King of Middle Distance, Hicham El Guerrouj retires
The quadruple World 1500m champion and record holder Hicham El Guerrouj has this evening confirmed his decision
to retire. "I am quitting competition," said a tearful El Guerrouj at a press conference in Casablanca, Morocco, this
evening. "I hope the authorities and Moroccan athletes will continue to work so Moroccan athletics continues to be
strong." "I have no willingness or motivation to continue competing. I am quitting racing to spend more time with my
Wednesday 26th April 06, Preview of Irish Orienteering Championships, Carlingford, Louth
Despite a strong overseas entry, Irish orienteers are likely to come out on top when the Irish Orienteering
Championships take place on Slieve Foye, Carlingford, Co Louth this weekend (29 April to 1 May). For the
first time in some years, world ranking points are at stake in the long distance race at the championships,
and entries have come in from France, Italy, Switzerland and USA. It means that top Irish orienteers,
including experienced internationals Marcus Pinker, Niall Bourke and Neil Dobbs, all have a chance to move
up the international rankings. Unfortunately absent will be the defending champion Andrew Quin, who is
based in Sweden. The overseas challenge is led by Randy Hall (USA), Vincent Picard (France) and Kurt
Schmid
(Switzerland).
In the womens long distance competition, Niamh O Boyle from Naas is the defending champion. She takes
on many times former champion Una May of host club Three Rock Orienteers in Dublin, and Ailbhe
Creedon, who, like May, has competed for Ireland in both orienteering and mountain running. Also entered
in the women s elite category is Ruth Lynam from Naas who won the over 50 class at the prestigious JK
Festival of Orienteering over the Easter weekend
