Jana Hazekamp
Take the problem out of word problems for your students and strengthen
their understanding of mathematics while developing their problem‐solving
skills. Throughout this session, you’ll explore the step‐by‐step visual
strategy used for problem solving known as model drawing, and you’ll use
this strategy to solve numerous word problems with ease. You’ll also learn
the progression of model drawing across grade levels and explore how it
builds the bridge to algebraic thinking.
—FEATURED WORKSHOP—
SD02 Why Students Hate Word Problems (Gr. K–8)
Dan Meyer
The fault lies not with our students but with the quality of the word problems
themselves, restricted far too long by the paper they’re printed on. As
we start to deliver curricula digitally, we need to reckon seriously with the
reasons and effective methods for connecting math to the world outside
the math classroom. Join Dan for a hands‐on exploration.
SD03 Math Mastery through the 6 Levels of Knowing Math
(Gr. K–8)
Mahesh Sharma
Let’s walk through the 6 levels of knowing math and how to guide your students
to math mastery! You’ll break down the three components of a math
idea—linguistic, conceptual, and procedural. You’ll learn how an idea
passes through six levels of knowing—intuitive, concrete, pictorial/representational,
abstract/symbolic, and application—to achieve the procedural
level. And, you’ll learn how to use this insight to improve student learning
and success for a lifetime!
AFTERNOON Sessions 1:00-2:15 pm
SD04 It’s a Game. It’s an Activity. It’s an Intervention!
(Gr. 6–8)
Anni Stipek
Give your struggling students a solid understanding of basic math skills
while engaging them in games and activities. You won’t believe how
much more effective your interventions become! In this fun and fast-paced
session, Anni offers games that develop the problem-solving and thinking
skills your students need to accomplish the work you expect of them.
