Morning Sessions 10:15‐11:30 am
SA04 Foundations of Number Sense: Part I (Gr. K–6) INTRO
Ricky Mikelman
Strong number sense is the foundation of Singapore Math—and absolutely
essential to success at higher‐level mathematics. Throughout this session,
you’ll examine what number sense is and how students who master it
have a strong conceptual understanding of place value and number facts.
And, you’ll find out how to help all your students not only develop number
sense, but also really get it. By doing so, you’ll build a solid foundation for
algebraic thinking.
SA05 Bringing the 8 Mathematical Practices to Life in Your
Classroom (Gr. 6–8) INTRO
Anni Stipek
Join Anni to explore the essence of a Singapore Math lesson, including
essential ideas that bring the 8 Mathematical Practices of the Common Core
to life for your students. See what these key practices look like in a math
classroom and leave with instructional strategies and tips for developing
them in your students.
SA06 Getting Number Bonds to Bond (Gr. K–1) INTRO
Catherine Kuhns
Discover fun and engaging ways to help children master the number bonds
from 2 to 10. In this fast‐paced session, you’ll learn highly effective games
and activities, many of which use children’s literature as a basis.
SA07 Developing Mathematical Thinkers (Gr. K–6) ADV
Jana Hazekamp
Math class is not just about right answers! Bring higher-level thinking
into your math class with Jana’s proven comprehension and questioning
strategies. After all, our role as educators is to teach our kids to THINK—in
every subject we teach.
SA08 Math Interventions: Designing Instruction to Meet
the Needs of Struggling Students (Gr. 1–5) INTRO
Eliza Thomas
What can you do for students who struggle? Join Eliza and learn how to
analyze the task you expect a student to do and then design instruction
to meet that individual’s needs—the Singapore way. You’ll marvel at the
quick improvement, especially in your students’ understanding of place
value and the four operations.
SA09 Teaching Math the STEM Way—Flipped Session
(Gr. K–5)
Sandi Reyes
Start incorporating critical thinking skills into your everyday math
instruction to achieve Common Core expectations and improve student
achievement and standard assessment scores. In this “flipped session,”
Sandi presents much of the content via video. Then, you’ll make over one
or two of your own math lessons in a hands-on, minds-on work session.
You’ll leave with a fresh perspective on how to teach math along with
math lessons that are transformed and ready to use. You won’t believe
how motivated your students become as they problem-solve mathematical
situations from the real world! *NOTE: This is a “Flipped Classroom”
session. You’ll have some homework to complete before attending. It will
be posted on a website and e-mailed to you two weeks before the conference.
Please bring one or two current math lessons.
