almost got him!” Tyre’s short legs ran faster.<br />
<strong>Burly</strong> stood by the side of the river <strong>and</strong> looked at it as it raced by. If he waded<br />
in now, he’d be out in the open <strong>and</strong> easy prey but if he didn’t... he looked over<br />
his shoulder... they’d find him anyway. He had no choice, he had to try to lose<br />
them. He walked into the river. <strong>The</strong> forest behind him seemed to hold its<br />
breath. <strong>The</strong>n there was a noise, a breathless pouf! <strong>and</strong> a dart hit him in his<br />
hindquarters. <strong>Burly</strong> crashed into the shallows of the river <strong>and</strong> the cool water<br />
trickled around him.<br />
CHAPTER 4<br />
Max <strong>and</strong> <strong>Grum</strong> ran in the opposite direction, <strong>Grum</strong> dragging on Max’s arm the<br />
whole time. But Max suddenly pulled free <strong>and</strong> stopped in his tracks. “<strong>Grum</strong>!”<br />
he shouted, “We can’t leave <strong>Burly</strong>!”<br />
<strong>Grum</strong> stopped <strong>and</strong> rolled his eyes. “I know, I know, I wasn’t going to go<br />
much further - just far enough to fool the hunters, of course we’re going back!”<br />
“Yes!” Max punched the air.<br />
<strong>Grum</strong> put his h<strong>and</strong>s on his hips . “Look, this is the forest, every sound at<br />
the moment is carrying - just be quiet will you? Follow me <strong>and</strong> be quiet.”<br />
Max nodded solemnly <strong>and</strong> they headed back along their path. “Sorry,” said<br />
Max quietly. “I should have known you wouldn’t leave <strong>Burly</strong>.”<br />
“Yeah well,” sniffed <strong>Grum</strong>. “He’s a friend, I don’t leave my friends in trouble<br />
okay?”<br />
“Okay,” nodded Max.<br />
<strong>The</strong>y came to the place where they’d parted with <strong>Burly</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Grum</strong> sniffed the<br />
air. “<strong>The</strong>y’ve been here,” he said, “can you smell that?”<br />
Max sniffed the air. “That’s ManHunk,” he said. “My dad uses it. My mum<br />
hates it.”<br />
“And you have the nerve to say us groblins smell bad,” said <strong>Grum</strong>.<br />
Max grinned. “It is a bit gross...”<br />
“<strong>Burly</strong> was right,” said <strong>Grum</strong>, “they’re following him, look, they’ve run after<br />
him. I don’t suppose you’ve got a plan?”<br />
