Stories of Impact
Whether guests left knowing their piece was invaluable or if it was
worth less than they paid, all who attended the Antiques Roadshow-El Paso
left with the excited feeling of having been part of a national TV show.
When El Pasoans think PBS, many think Antiques Roadshow. It’s the
show that’s part history, which unites Americans, and part treasure hunt--
that excites them.
The taping of the El Paso episodes led to some great moments such
as the discovery of Andy Warhol soup cans worth an estimated $27,000-
$36,000. Sweetest of all was a marriage proposal by a young man.
When the announcement was made of the show’s trip to El Paso, the
masses went crazy for the 3,000 free tickets available through KCOS.
To assure the event would be a success, KCOS-TV recruited about 150
volunteers to help the day of. Those who volunteered their time also were
able to bring items for appraisal.
All in all, the Roadshow team gathered 10 hours of footage of appraisals
alone.
Meanwhile, KCOS-TV camera’s were capturing the behind-the-scene
moments. We documented the setting up of this large-scale TV production
and interviewed key players such as producer Marsha Bemko and host
Mark L. Walhberg. KCOS added local fl air by logging the experience of
two attendees, one of which is well recognized in the community for his
home that’s decorated in hundreds of antiques.
“From the extensive press coverage—a record four front page articles
in the local papers—to the discovery of a signed fi rst edition copy of Tolkien’s
“The Hobbit” valued at $80,000 to $100,000, our production team
and appraisers were thrilled with our El Paso experience,” said Matthew
Midura of WGBH, the station that produces the program. “Working with
each of you and with KCOS-TV was a real treat.”
The three episodes will air this year as part of the show’s 2012 season
on March 26, April 2 and April 9. KCOS-TV’s production will air on the
same dates prior to the national episodes.
KCOS-TV REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
June 2011 was an exciting time not only for the station but also for our
area’s viewers of Antiques Roadshow. The national acclaimed program visited
the city and more than 6,000 people had items appraised, some leaving
with heavy price tags on things once stored in the garage. KCOS-TV
helped the Roadshow team put the event together.
