Leadership and mentoring in
The Women’s College
Since its doors opened in 1894 the College has been a centre of leadership for women. Founding
Principal Louisa Macdonald was involved in almost every women’s organisation of the Federation period.
She established traditions of leadership and community service which have been pursued by generations
of College graduates; women who have taken up the challenge of leadership, to contribute to social, economic,
cultural and political life in Australia.
At a Leadership Dinner in the Principal’s Flat Prue Golland, Belinda Turner, Prof Lumby, Alice Finn, Lucy Scarrabelotti, Nicole Hall.
Today scholars are encouraged to enhance their skills and potential as leaders.
The Leadership Program offers opportunities to explore the concept of leadership
in conversation with role models. Women influential in diverse fields stimulate
lively discussion. What are the characteristics of leadership? What are the
skills and behaviours that leaders need? Are leaders born or made? What does it
mean to me? Why does leadership matter?
Mentoring
”My mentoring role is not only what I can do, but rallying my network of associates, friends
and contacts to the cause. I find myself mentoring both current and past students. I have seen
my advice make a difference to the future pursued by many. It is enormously satisfying,
even if I find myself on call 24 hours, 7 days a week!
I hope my mentoring activities will be viewed as my most enduring legacy as Principal.”
Quentin Bryce, AO
Alison Leigh, Science, TV, film producer plays a key role in the
science mentoring program, with student Caroline Higgins
Science 3.
”Mentoring is an essential part of learning
and growing professionally and personally.
I have received great support from mentors
throughout my career and have learnt as
much through the mentoring I have done
for younger women.”
Jane Neale, General Manager, George Patterson Bates
”At Womens, mentoring exists at many
levels, from Ms Bryce, from our peer
groups, the seniors, Postgrads, and through
dinners with top executives and academics.
Most of the time we don’t see it as
mentoring, its just part of the whole
experience of College.”
Belinda Turner, Com/Lib Stud 3
Leadership
”We hear a lot of talk about the
importance of leadership and the role
in mentoring young women that other
women can play. What definitions of
leadership often lack is an important
quality which makes people look to
someone else and want to follow their
vision. Empathy. It’s a willingness
to put yourself in someone else’s shoes.”
Prof. Catharine Lumby, Head of Media and
Communication School, Leadership Dinner, 2002
”Accomplished women share with us
stories of their own experiences both
uplifting and disheartening, opening
many doors”
Prue Golland, Year 4, Physiotherapy
”The point
about women
in leadership
positions is that
they must make
it better for
other women.
Otherwise there is
no point in them
being here.”
“Siv can give me advice that
I can’t get anywhere else;
Summer
2002
From the Chair
The Chair Lyn Wood Sally Crossing
2002 has been a very good year for The Women's
College. We all share great pride in the excellent
exam results achieved by our students across the
board, with four University medals! The leadership
of Sarah Sivyer, our Senior Student, and her House
Committee has been an inspiration to witness,
with their priorities of public service and support
of public charities in addition to the usual College
activities.
Sally Crossing, who joined the Council in 1993,
retired in August, after serving the College in
many capacities, as a stalwart guardian of our
as a guide on governance issues through the
Review and Nominating Committees, and as an
editor and adviser on the Journal. Her generous
donation to the Sulman Appeal financed
the new front steps which play a central role in
the life of College. Sally earned the award of
Consumer Advocate of 2001 for her involvement
with issues relating to breast cancer. Publisher,
Jacquie Lane has been welcomed to the Council in
Sally's place. Council elections were advertised in
September, and four retiring Councillors were
returned unopposed.
This year has seen a Council and Union review
of alumni organisations by McKinsey and Co. from
which a number of useful suggestions emerged.
The College investments are under review, led by
Virginia Dowd and the Finance Committee. The
Building and Development Committee, chaired by
Louise Cox AM, has concentrated on kitchen renovations,
in addition to routine maintenance issues.
On behalf of Council, I would like to thank students,
staff and all who have contributed to the
successes of 2002, and to wish our readers
The AGM
2001/2 Union Committee: Back: R Wines, G McDonald,
R Capon, L Hayes, D Leader, L Bruce, B Ballard
From the
Union
Earlier this year the Principal, Quentin Bryce
approached McKinsey and Co. to look at
how to build a stronger and more vibrant
alumni. McKinseys offered their services
pro bono to conduct the work. Alumna
Christie Boyce, McKinsey Principal was
involved in surveying a number of past
and present students.
The most predominant finding was that
past and present students thought
that maintaining friendships on leaving
College was the most important aspect
of an alumni program.
The Union has taken on the task of creating
a more active alumni group. We want to
provide an environment where alumni feel
welcome, and are able to maintain as well as
re-establish their relationship with College
and their College friends. For this to be successful
we need alumni support. We are asking
that all past students consider becoming
involved in a new structure.
The new structure incorporates several
key elements which revolve around getting
people back together. What is required is
the donation of people’s time. We need people
from each Fresher year group to put
their hands up to pitch in to get their friends
back together. We are asking each Fresher
year to hold at least one event annually and
that a group of people from that year be
involved in organising the function. It could
be as simple as a BBQ or a small dinner or as
big as a black tie function.
So think about those great times you had at
College and get involved in getting your
Fresher year together again!
