<strong>Leadership</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>mentor<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>College</strong><br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce its doors opened <strong>in</strong> 1894 the <strong>College</strong> has been a centre of leadership for women. Found<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Louisa Macdonald was <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> almost every women’s organisation of the Federation period.<br />
She established traditions of leadership <strong>and</strong> community service which have been pursued by generations<br />
of <strong>College</strong> graduates; women who have taken up the challenge of leadership, to contribute to social, economic,<br />
cultural <strong>and</strong> political life <strong>in</strong> Australia.<br />
At a <strong>Leadership</strong> D<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>in</strong> the Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal’s Flat Prue Goll<strong>and</strong>, Bel<strong>in</strong>da Turner, Prof Lumby, Alice F<strong>in</strong>n, Lucy Scarrabelotti, Nicole Hall.<br />
Today scholars are encouraged to enhance their skills <strong>and</strong> potential as leaders.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Leadership</strong> Program offers opportunities to explore the concept of leadership<br />
<strong>in</strong> conversation with role models. Women <strong>in</strong>fluential <strong>in</strong> diverse fields stimulate<br />
lively discussion. What are the characteristics of leadership? What are the<br />
skills <strong>and</strong> behaviours that leaders need? Are leaders born or made? What does it<br />
mean to me? Why does leadership matter?<br />
Mentor<strong>in</strong>g<br />
”My <strong>mentor<strong>in</strong>g</strong> role is not only what I can do, but rally<strong>in</strong>g my network of associates, friends<br />
<strong>and</strong> contacts to the cause. I f<strong>in</strong>d myself <strong>mentor<strong>in</strong>g</strong> both current <strong>and</strong> past students. I have seen<br />
my advice make a difference to the future pursued by many. It is enormously satisfy<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
even if I f<strong>in</strong>d myself on call 24 hours, 7 days a week!<br />
I hope my <strong>mentor<strong>in</strong>g</strong> activities will be viewed as my most endur<strong>in</strong>g legacy as Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal.”<br />
Quent<strong>in</strong> Bryce, AO<br />
Alison Leigh, Science, TV, film producer plays a key role <strong>in</strong> the<br />
science <strong>mentor<strong>in</strong>g</strong> program, with student Carol<strong>in</strong>e Higg<strong>in</strong>s<br />
Science 3.<br />
”Mentor<strong>in</strong>g is an essential part of learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>and</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g professionally <strong>and</strong> personally.<br />
I have received great support from mentors<br />
throughout my career <strong>and</strong> have learnt as<br />
much through the <strong>mentor<strong>in</strong>g</strong> I have done<br />
for younger women.”<br />
Jane Neale, General Manager, George Patterson Bates<br />
”At Womens, <strong>mentor<strong>in</strong>g</strong> exists at many<br />
levels, from Ms Bryce, from our peer<br />
groups, the seniors, Postgrads, <strong>and</strong> through<br />
d<strong>in</strong>ners with top executives <strong>and</strong> academics.<br />
Most of the time we don’t see it as<br />
<strong>mentor<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, its just part of the whole<br />
experience of <strong>College</strong>.”<br />
Bel<strong>in</strong>da Turner, Com/Lib Stud 3<br />
<strong>Leadership</strong><br />
”We hear a lot of talk about the<br />
importance of leadership <strong>and</strong> the role<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>mentor<strong>in</strong>g</strong> young women that other<br />
women can play. What def<strong>in</strong>itions of<br />
leadership often lack is an important<br />
quality which makes people look to<br />
someone else <strong>and</strong> want to follow their<br />
vision. Empathy. It’s a will<strong>in</strong>gness<br />
to put yourself <strong>in</strong> someone else’s shoes.”<br />
Prof. Cathar<strong>in</strong>e Lumby, Head of Media <strong>and</strong><br />
Communication School, <strong>Leadership</strong> D<strong>in</strong>ner, 2002<br />
”Accomplished women share with us<br />
stories of their own experiences both<br />
uplift<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> dishearten<strong>in</strong>g, open<strong>in</strong>g<br />
many doors”<br />
Prue Goll<strong>and</strong>, Year 4, Physiotherapy<br />
”<strong>The</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t<br />
about women<br />
<strong>in</strong> leadership<br />
positions is that<br />
they must make<br />
it better for<br />
other women.<br />
Otherwise there is<br />
no po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> them<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g here.”<br />

From the Chair<br />
<strong>The</strong> Chair Lyn Wood Sally Cross<strong>in</strong>g<br />
2002 has been a very good year for <strong>The</strong> <strong>Women's</strong><br />
<strong>College</strong>. We all share great pride <strong>in</strong> the excellent<br />
exam results achieved by our students across the<br />
board, with four University medals! <strong>The</strong> leadership<br />
of Sarah Sivyer, our Senior Student, <strong>and</strong> her House<br />
Committee has been an <strong>in</strong>spiration to witness,<br />
with their priorities of public service <strong>and</strong> support<br />
of public charities <strong>in</strong> addition to the usual <strong>College</strong><br />
activities.<br />
Sally Cross<strong>in</strong>g, who jo<strong>in</strong>ed the Council <strong>in</strong> 1993,<br />

as a guide on governance issues through the<br />
Review <strong>and</strong> Nom<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g Committees, <strong>and</strong> as an<br />
editor <strong>and</strong> adviser on the Journal. Her generous<br />
donation to the Sulman Appeal f<strong>in</strong>anced<br />
the new front steps which play a central role <strong>in</strong><br />
the life of <strong>College</strong>. Sally earned the award of<br />
Consumer Advocate of 2001 for her <strong>in</strong>volvement<br />
with issues relat<strong>in</strong>g to breast cancer. Publisher,<br />
Jacquie Lane has been welcomed to the Council <strong>in</strong><br />
Sally's place. Council elections were advertised <strong>in</strong><br />
September, <strong>and</strong> four retir<strong>in</strong>g Councillors were<br />
returned unopposed.<br />
This year has seen a Council <strong>and</strong> Union review<br />
of alumni organisations by McK<strong>in</strong>sey <strong>and</strong> Co. from<br />
which a number of useful suggestions emerged.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestments are under review, led by<br />
Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Dowd <strong>and</strong> the F<strong>in</strong>ance Committee. <strong>The</strong><br />
Build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Development Committee, chaired by<br />
Louise Cox AM, has concentrated on kitchen renovations,<br />
<strong>in</strong> addition to rout<strong>in</strong>e ma<strong>in</strong>tenance issues.<br />
On behalf of Council, I would like to thank students,<br />

<strong>The</strong> AGM<br />
2001/2 Union Committee: Back: R W<strong>in</strong>es, G McDonald,<br />
R Capon, L Hayes, D Leader, L Bruce, B Ballard<br />
From the<br />
Union<br />
Earlier this year the Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal, Quent<strong>in</strong> Bryce<br />
approached McK<strong>in</strong>sey <strong>and</strong> Co. to look at<br />
how to build a stronger <strong>and</strong> more vibrant<br />
alumni. McK<strong>in</strong>seys offered their services<br />
pro bono to conduct the work. Alumna<br />
Christie Boyce, McK<strong>in</strong>sey Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal was<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> survey<strong>in</strong>g a number of past<br />
<strong>and</strong> present students.<br />
<strong>The</strong> most predom<strong>in</strong>ant f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g was that<br />
past <strong>and</strong> present students thought<br />
that ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g friendships on leav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>College</strong> was the most important aspect<br />
of an alumni program.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Union has taken on the task of creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a more active alumni group. We want to<br />
provide an environment where alumni feel<br />
welcome, <strong>and</strong> are able to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> as well as<br />
re-establish their relationship with <strong>College</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> their <strong>College</strong> friends. For this to be successful<br />
we need alumni support. We are ask<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that all past students consider becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> a new structure.<br />
<strong>The</strong> new structure <strong>in</strong>corporates several<br />
key elements which revolve around gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
people back together. What is required is<br />
the donation of people’s time. We need people<br />
from each Fresher year group to put<br />
their h<strong>and</strong>s up to pitch <strong>in</strong> to get their friends<br />
back together. We are ask<strong>in</strong>g each Fresher<br />
year to hold at least one event annually <strong>and</strong><br />
that a group of people from that year be<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> organis<strong>in</strong>g the function. It could<br />
be as simple as a BBQ or a small d<strong>in</strong>ner or as<br />
big as a black tie function.<br />
So th<strong>in</strong>k about those great times you had at<br />
<strong>College</strong> <strong>and</strong> get <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> gett<strong>in</strong>g your<br />
Fresher year together aga<strong>in</strong>!<br />
