“Compliments of Nucky” • AC-Themed Jewelry • New CRDA Executive Director “Compliments of Nucky” Campaign Sweeps Across AC The Insider Local News, Happenings, and Events If you were driving on the A.C. Expressway during the weekend of September 23, your toll going into Atlantic City was free thanks to HBO’s “Compliments of Nucky” campaign. In celebration of the Season 2 premiere of their award-winning series, “Boardwalk Empire,” HBO sponsored all eastbound tolls into Atlantic City from the expressway during the series’ debut weekend, along with a beautification project at the entrance to Atlantic City. “The beautification project and sponsorship of the tolls are a great strategic fit for our marketing campaign because they organically tie into the narrative of the show, representing how Nucky Thompson might curry favor and reward his supporters in the modern day,” said Zach Enterlin, senior vice president, program advertising, HBO. Casinos Urge Voters to Pass Sports Betting Measure In early November, New Jersey residents will have the opportunity to vote for legalized online gambling in the state, and Atlantic City casinos are now backing this measure and urging voters to pass the legislation. The Casino Association of New Jersey, which represents the city’s 11 gambling operations, is pushing hard to have sports betting legalized. According to Bob Griffin, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey and chief executive officer of Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc., “legalized sports betting will attract more tourists to our city to enjoy our world-class entertainment, thriving restaurant industry, brand-name retail shopping, and famous Boardwalk. Sports betting will allow Atlantic City to better compete, grow, and reinvest in the region.” New Jersey’s proposal would allow wagering on most professional, college, and amateur sporting events. Betting on college sports that take place in NJ or involving NJ collegiate teams would not be permitted. Mayor Langford Not Running For Senate Seat Tossing his proverbial hat out of the ring, Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford recently announced that he will not be running for the 2nd District Senate seat in this month’s election. The mayor sent out a letter in late September saying when he submitted his petition, he was doing it in order to take the necessary step to qualify as a candidate and would assess his candidacy over the summer months and make a final decision after Labor Day. “It would not be prudent to go forward at this time in pursuit of the 2nd District Senate seat; especially since it would be for an abbreviated term,” said Langford. “There are several factors which led me to this decision; none of which shall I discuss or expound upon.” Gift Gift $50 $100 Create your own Card A Very Special Holiday Card Art Contest GRADE SCHOOL TEACHERS! The Insider Local News, Happenings and Events Atlantic City-Themed Jewelry Adorns Stars at the Emmys The cast and producers of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” were clad in Atlantic City-themed jewelry created by Paula Jerome at the 2011 Emmy Awards. Terence Winter, creator and executive producer of the award-winning drama, discovered that Jerome’s Atlantic City Charms collection serendipitously tie in with the show. “When I wanted to buy a special gift for my actors and fellow producers following our Emmy nominations for “Boardwalk Empire,” I needed to look no further once I saw Paula’s spectacular Atlantic City-themed jewelry,” said Winter. “Her designs are understated, yet elegant; her diamondstudded postcard cuff links and sterling silver pendants will be our lucky charms.” “I never would have dreamed that what began as an homage to my fond memories would make its way to the red carpet,” said Paula Jerome. Jerome, who was born in northeast Philadelphia, used her frequent childhood summers in Atlantic City as her inspiration for the collection. “I am so honored that Terence Winter believes strongly enough in my jewelry to share it with his brilliant colleagues,” she continued. In 2008, Jerome’s memories motivated her to create charms, lapel pins, and cufflinks based on iconic images of historic Atlantic City, including a vintage postcard, Lucy the Elephant, and Fralinger’s World Famous Salt Water Taffy. Especially dear to Jerome’s heart is the “Bathing Beauty” charm, which is modeled after a classic photo of her mother posing on the beach in the 1940s. 14 | The Boardwalk Journal | October 2011 www.weddingsbyphotographics CRDA Gives AC Police $3.5 Million for Upgrades A technology upgrade for Atlantic City police, which was already underway, recently got a major boost when the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) approved $3.5 million for the initiative. The funds are expected to cover costs to upgrade the Police Department’s computer dispatch and records management systems, and train police officers and city personnel to use them. The plan also sets the stage for city police to connect with a search engine, exclusive to law enforcement, that officers will be able to access from the street. By linking to a web-based surveillance camera system, that is also in the works, the computers will soon enable officers to monitor scenes they are responding to before they have arrived. This new system will also allow officers to search more records. Currently, they are limited to state Motor Vehicle Commission and the National Crime Information Center databases. In The Spotlight John Palmieri Named CRDA Executive Director Reaffirming his commitment to revitalize Atlantic City, Governor Chris Christie recently applauded the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority’s (CRDA) approval of John F. Palmieri as its new Executive Director, calling it an important next step in realizing the Administration’s forward looking, comprehensive reform agenda to bring Atlantic City back. Susan Thompson currently serves as the interim Executive of the CRDA, and will return to her role as Deputy Executive Director. Christie emphasized that Palmieri’s appointment will help accomplish his administration’s agenda of restoring the resort’s economy. As director of the CRDA, much of Palmieri’s responsibilities will be overseeing the newly formed Tourism District in Atlantic City. Palmieri, a New Jersey native, is the former director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority and also led previous redevelopment efforts in Hartford, Conn., Charlotte, N.C., and Providence, R.I. “The momentum is with us to bring job creation, growth and hope back to Atlantic City and the region,” adds Christie. “Every day we are making progress to secure the growth, investment, and success of Atlantic City’s gaming and tourism industries, and I am pleased that John Palmieri will be there to provide leadership in that effort.” Formerly the director of Boston’s Redevelopment Authority (BRA), Palmieri brings more than 30 years of experience in planning and economic development from three different cities to his new post. While BRA director, the Authority permitted some of the most significant projects in the city’s history and sought creative ways to stimulate job growth. Prior to joining the BRA, he was director of the Department of Development Services in Hartford, CT. Palmieri graduated from Temple University in 1972 and earned a master’s degree at the University of Rhode Island in 1976. “I also want to thank Susan Thompson for guiding the CRDA through this transition period,” added Christie. “Her responsible and dedicated leadership has moved Atlantic City forward, spurring the creation of the tourism district and a host of other development activity.
